    New record next month too

  3. In the spirit of "oh what the hell this could be the last time they play the U.S." and after checking my balance of travel miles, I just got a ticket for 9/15 in NYC.

Favorite song title from upcoming LP: "Couples vs Jobless Mid 30s".

  4. I kinda figure the Fall will be playing Mystic Lake Casino in 2025.

  5. That run of dates lines up well with Basilica Soundscape in Hudson, but unfortunately not a very intriguing lineup.

  7. Still working out my opinion of the new one but I think it is good.

MES is doing...something (speech? performance? tape loops? spoken word? seems like some combination of all those) on 8/02 as part of the Wyndham Lewis exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London. Given his recent physical state (which seemingly is dire but who knows) and the extra chaotic show the band played last week should be...interesting.

Been listening to it non-stop for the past couple days, which I hardly ever do anymore, I think it's probably the best thing since The Remainderer, which I think is the high-point of last ten yrs or so & I might put it roughly on par with Your Future

Also, MES has really gone whole hog into deploying the voice as an instrument, the lyrics don't even seem like lyrics exactly, more like rhythmic placeholders. Odd, cryptic phrases bubble up, but their so cryptic and eccentric I'm not sure an meaning could be parsed from them exactly. I mean "Couples vs Jobless Mid-30s" was apparently originally about Eagles of Death Metal, but now it isn't, but the backing vocals are still singing "Eagles of Death Metal"?

    Agent of chaos indeed.

Cancelled at the last minute due to MES's health. Not be all doom & gloom...but...

  11. Oof, hope he can rally for the US dates.

  12. there are US tour dates?

  13. A string of dates in New York and Cropped Out in Sept but that appears to be all

  14. Still a top interview

    and this bit:

“I’ve been poorly since Christmas, so I’ve been actually sitting down and watching bits of music on telly,” he reveals. “It cheers me up actually. I’ve never paid much attention to competitors or anything like that – the funny thing is, there’s fuck all to catch. There’s a lot of shit! Sleaford Mods, that’s about the only good thing. There’s none of them groups you can go and laugh at anymore, they’re so fucking bad. All the groups have been to college.”

  15. Your mom goes to college

  16. Of course Smith likes the Sleaford Mods. Makes sense, I suppose. I read a recent Iggy Pop article where he also Bannoned the Sleaford Mods. I wonder what those guys think of the adulation. Given "Pubic Hair, Ltd.", probably not much.

  17. I am a little surprised he likes the Mods, he usually doesn't have any interest in stuff that roughly similar to what he does ( I don't really think they are that similar) , plus their blowing up in the UK, plus they're fookin Southerner cunts, y'know? But he must view them as proper piss ups or some such or did Jason say he hated the Fall? That would do it too.

  18. Didn't MES basically call out Pavement for copying him? The Mods probably sound more similar to the Fall than Pavement did.

Wonder how he feels about Canadian band, Ought, a Fall ripoff if there ever was one. Probably hates and/or has never heard of them

  19. "Cunt in a BMW" I believe was his phrase for Malkmus.

Finally listening to this new one, and holy hannah it's great. Best since YFOC, no question. It's strange - I've been moaning for a personnel shakeup to curb-kick the sameyness of the last 10 years, and really wasn't expecting much with no changes to the Gruppe payroll other than the loss of Eleni, but this sounds like a much revitalized band, if not a different band. Actually, it almost sounds like 3 or 4 different bands over the course of the album - the kraut-y garage rock that's been their stock in trade for a while, a doomy metal track, some bouncy rockabilly touches, multi-part suites, and a confounding long solo guitar solo at the end. And 3 or 4 different MES's as well. From an all-growlly leadoff track that's probably the best showcase to date of his autumnal phlegmy bark, to a croony voice he hasn't really used since the early 90s. And as a whole, it sounds like this record was given the attention that hasn't been present since Domino pushed him to work on YFOC a little harder. There's layers to this thing that haven't really been on any of the last handful of efforts.

Although my enjoyment of one track, I think it was "Second House Now," will forever be colored by my friend listening to it and saying "this sounds like the Fall doing the Replacements" and realizing he was right.

Couples cs. Jobless Mid 30s is an insane piece of music as I've heard lately
