*Rhys Chatham*'s Guitar Trio with special guests: Fog
Written in 1977, "Guitar Trio" is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and
with good reason. The word "seminal" was invented to describe it. With a
single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty,
overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale
and Tony Conrad
with the elemental fury of
The Ramones. The
amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene
throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding
father of the notorious No Wave movement. The influence of "Guitar Trio"
spread even farther as former students and ensemble members carried its
shimmering swagger into the rock mainstream. When Sonic Youth are
inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame (in, yes, Cleveland -- and
you know it's gonna happen), listen for some G3. It's there.

In 2007 Chatham returns (he expatriated to
Paris in 1987) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Guitar Trio" by
performing it on tour throughout the US and Canada. And we don't mean
it's on the set list; it is the set list. These will be no ordinary
concerts, and the ensemble -- pumped up to a formidable six guitars at
most shows -- will be no ordinary ensemble. Chatham will lead a band of
all-stars at the Whole. The concerts will also feature the original
visual projections created for the piece in 1977 by famed visual artist
and feature-film director Robert Longo.

Together, Rhys Chatham and company will demonstrate to a new generation
of fans the amazing feats that can be accomplished with one chord, six
guitars, a rollicking rhythm section and amplifiers set to "Liquefy."
The show will also be recorded, to be released on a G3-only CD. The
title? It's obvious: Guitar Trio Is My Life.

Rhys will perform with:

Guitar: Erik Fratzke, (HAPPY APPLE,ZEBULON PIKE)
Guitar: Andrew Broder, (FOG )
Guitar: Todd Rittman, (US MAPLE)
Guitar: Ben Vida, (BIRDSHOW, TOWN AND
COUNTRY)
Guitar: Rob Lowe, (90 DAY MEN, LICHENS)
Guitar: DAVID DANIELL (JONATHAN
KANE, SAN AGUSTIN)
Bass: (ex-HUSKER DÜ, GANGFONT FEATURING INTERLOPER)
Drums: Tim Glenn, (FOG)

A new, slim, trim, and vigorous Fog opens the show.

The Whole is a weird place. What's with that painting that says "Rollins Band"? It doesn't look like Henry Rollins at all!
wmcblob
2/11/07 12:19 PM
I enjoyed the Rhys Chatham Experience.

It was really nice to hear all those guitars massed together during the climaxes and the crazy overtones that were being produced as a result.

What was with ALL of those Whole paintings? The ones of Tom Waits and Sleater-Kinney, the ones that I could spot from where I was sitting, looked nothing like their real-life selves.
Adster
2/11/07 12:42 PM
Chatham's guitar was awesome. There was something pretty hilarious about watching his face while he played it.
Dustroyer
2/11/07 12:45 PM
I liked it, too, but when it started, it didn't seem like it would become nearly as intense as it got. The overtones were amazing. I was hearing all kinds of shit in there. Also, Mr Chatham himself was a very warm and engaging fellow. He asks you your name when you talk to him. Isn't that nice?

Those paintings were like if you described, to a Mexican folk artist (through an obvious language barrier), what certain rock stars looked like, without letting them see a photo.

Isaac, I woulda said hi if I'd seen you.

the frogs are still funny. i don't care what anyone says. every time i've seen them it's been a trainwreck. they sang a song about being hit in the face with an airplane which i thought was funny...

Adster
2/12/07 6:54 AM
I can see how it might struck some as odd. Maple sort of made a name for themselves, especially around the time of touring w/ Pavement, as weird dudes to watch perform. I doubt it's anything too planned-out; I think it's just kinda how the dude plays.
Roaratorio
2/12/07 6:55 AM

Adster - I'm sure it isn't planned out. It just happens. There are plenty of people's stage presence, I don't care for.

Whatever, at least they have them. I've got the "stay behind the guitar players, and only stand next to the drummer" syndrome, when I play bass.

"I'm not a US Maple fan -- they just sound like bad Beefheart, to me"

I totally agree. They were yawntastic when I sawr them. Even with the weirdo stage presence and "if Iggy Pop and David Lee Roth were retarded" moves.

There just wasn't much too it.
Adster
2/12/07 7:14 AM
I'm not a US Maple fan -- they just sound like bad Beefheart, to me
I know a few people kinda think that. It's weird for me, because I remember hearing them in high school for the first time - and this was long before I'd ever heard Beefheart - and I remember thinking it was the CRAZIEST thing I'd ever heard in my life, and that there couldn't have been much precedent for it. They pretty much became my favorite band, and I've sorta been recently rediscovering how much I still dig 'em. But yeah, I'm now a little more aware of the influences from which they were birthed. I have to admit to still feeling a bit more moved by Maple's music than Beefheart's, but maybe only because they played a more crucial role in the early weird-ening of my musical tastes. Different strokes for different folks. The more you know. The circle of life, 'n' shit.
mr. tears
2/12/07 7:15 AM
i don't think you are getting the idea of it noah. which is fine.

there wasn't supposed to be much to it. the minimalism is what was supposed to make it interesting, if you are so inclined to be interested in that sort of thing i guess.
Roaratorio
2/12/07 7:17 AM
hey, if US Maple acts as anyone's gateway drug to more out-there music, then they've served a purpose, I would say...
Noah P.
2/12/07 7:17 AM
I understand it was suppose to be minimalism, but it just leave me floored, at all. Like, sure... kind of a cool concept, by getting these big-time guitar players, and have them play the E string, for 12 minutes... restraining, and have Tim Glenn play just hi-hat for the first piece.
magma90210
2/12/07 7:19 AM
i've never really understood the maple=beefheart thing at all...seems like a real lazy comparison. maple was a pretty singular, amazing thing for me....the quietness, the spareness of the arangements...most importantly Al's singing and stage presence.....unreal band to me.
Noah P.
2/12/07 7:19 AM
It was interesting, in that sense.

I mainly went for Fog, and to check out Rhys. So much hype to Rhys Chatham, I decided to stay.
mr. tears
2/12/07 7:21 AM
i get the comparison to beefheart. both bands have this super loose/tightness to them. the singing is obviously way different but i think al is doing something completely original that is arguably pretty annoying. sound familiar?
Adster
2/12/07 7:27 AM
Yeah, I think Maple's got their own flava of disjointedness. "Missouri Twist" is a mind-blower. Croikey, I could list a buttload of songs I love from them. Ne'ermind.
wmcblob
2/12/07 7:31 AM
What I would've given to see Ben Vida (wasn't he the latest US Maple drummer?) hop behind the kit and for the guys who were traveling with Chatham to launch into something else of his like "Drastic Classicism" as the second piece.

I saw US Maple for the 1st and only time at the Triple Rock, and having never seen them before I was pretty happy. "Purple on TIme" was pretty disappointing to me, and I ripped my favorite track off it and sold it back a while after buying it.

All their other stuff I have and enjoy muchly.

magma90210
2/12/07 7:34 AM
yeah i mean i get comparisons in the larger sense, but to me beefheart still feels like a (very very strange) 60s blues rock/garage band at it's core...where maple was much stranger feeling...creepier and more disjointed.....obv. the singing and al's stage persona feels much more odd to me as well.
wmcblob
2/12/07 7:37 AM

While we're at it, there's like a couple parts of ZB I like, but yeah, not too big a fan.

Fratzke with Ruins was great, though!

I can see that ZP would be a turnoff to some.
I like them, though they are far more technical than I usually go for, but the usual complaints people have about them are understandable.

haha yeah when maps played w.him solo at the fine line, he did a song, acoustic dylan type number where the verses were different but the chorus was "we're in this together, son, your beef is mine" which made my nite! i went up to him after when he was tearing down and we were setting up like a nerd and said how awesome it was...

I had no idea USM was so polarizing even to the local noiseniks. It just reinforces for me how good they are (not because you guys in particular don't like them, but rather, because they are so incredibly polarizing).

Anyway, the board conversations today are all repeats. What gives?

Speaking of polarizing bands... Here's a new one.
SINGER:
Todd Rittmann (US Maple)
Adam Vida (US Maple)
Ben Vida (Town and Country, Bird Show)
Rob Lowe (90 Day Men, Lichens)

We've been invited to tour with Battles in July. We'll be in MPLS (where Ben and I grew up) on July 11th, 2007 at Triple Rock. You gotta see Rittmann is bringing to this... that's all I'll say.

Best, Adam

Whole gig soon to be released

Rhys' own writeup of the gig. He likes us:

"As I was establishing eye contact with the audience and checking them out during the performance, I noticed that this was a particularly good-looking crowd, both the men and the women. Often at university gigs you get the blue jean crowd, as students are usually on a tight budget. Now I usually wear blue jeans myself (black ones, naturally), so I have nothing against them, but these people really had a cool, non-definable street look. The crowd was mostly graduate and undergraduate age, yet they all looked fantastic. Does this have something to do with Minneapolis? Or perhaps they were art students... Yes, that must be it. Art students tend to be more visually oriented, I would imagine. Anyway, this audience was a pleasure to play for as well as look at!"

See, had i gone I would've wore acid wash jeans with creased and rolled cuffs, and a Bad Boy Club t-shirt. Then Mr. Chatham's opinion on Whole Music Club couture would've been more realistic.
