I love The Smiths and Morissey.

I LOVE mimmicking his voice.

lovely songs lovely man hilarious attitude
This is a new song that he performed in Philadelphia.
I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris
I've really come around on his newer songs. I've come to enjoy Ringleader Of The Tormentors quite a bunch and "First Of The Gang To Die" is as good a pop song as anything he's ever written in my opinion.
I'm sorry zom.
I misjudged you.
i love this crazy queen
first of the gang to die is the best song he's written in ages, too, killer on the money

Morrissey is one of my all-time favorites. Seeing him in Omaha this year was fantastic. He's still got it.
Top 10.
He has done very little wrong in his career. Every record he has done has one song that blows me away including the last few. I can listen to Your Arsenal over and over. This Charming Man may be one of the best songs ever. I finally saw him this spring and love love loved it. I may try to fly and see him in DC. Easily top 5 show. Uncompromising attitude, true love for his fans, great whit and a subtly fuck you attitude. The fact that he has passed up millions for a Smiths reunion is incredible. It took me the last few years to really dig in to his catalog fully and its full of a million gems.
I am not totally surprised by Zom's appreciation. Its hard to not love the Moz! Great thread Killer and thanks for the posts of stuff.
Is there a Morissey disappreciation thread? I'd love to post there.
I totally understand why he passed on the Smiths reunion. Morrissey is a singer who has worked with a lot of "musical directors." His first musical director was Johnny Marr, and then Stephen Street. Followed by Boz Boorer & Alain Whyte and most recently Tony Visconti with help from Boz.
I'm not sure how he views them, but I view them as accompanists. I love them all in their own ways, but I never get hung up on The Smiths, because I think they're just a small portion of his career. Besides, he already does quite a few Smiths' songs live.
i love him.

Ditto that.

I definitely want to hear that prince.

Massive appreciation. I think I'm going to go dig out some records of his now. I was bummed I never got a chance to check out the last LP he did. I wonder if it's out of print by now.

Morrisseyoke?

i was thinking of going to smiths nite but i dunno

Love, love Morrissey. Finally saw him about a year ago in Seattle and he was terrific. You Are the Quarry is one of my favorite records of recent years -- especially "Come Back to Camden." Man that kills me.

is smiths night tomorrow?
it might be fun to celebrate a British band on an Irish holiday
it is indeed tomorrow. plus you can ride the bus for free after 6pm for maximum partying potential
what time?
free bus rides in honor of the potato blight

moz is of Irish descent. I will be playing some tunes. Post update to come.

No one in this thread appreciates Morrissey as much as the Mexican community.

lets just bump the smiths nite thread, haha

morrissey kind of looks like former indiana basketball coach bobby knight with less hair these days.

He is brilliant & wild, in the tradition of
Phillip Larkin & an excellent singer too.
I give up hating the guitar when I listen

Now I am informed.
Did anyone else go see him in Milwaukee last spring. It was tops. So many Smith's songs. He opened with the Queen is dead, it was unreal.
I still think he will, at some point, do a Smith's Reunion. The want will always be there.
I saw him in Atlantic City, NJ last year and he was great. I don't know if he'll do a Smiths reunion... he'd probably have it worked out that he keeps practically all the money because he's already doing really well on his solo tours. They'd have to make it really worth his while. Marr's the one who'll session/produce anyone's album just to make it through the week.
saw him in Omaha. I would love to be doing this tonight but I am feeling horrible and had to take the day off work. I would love to do up the night but I hope the rest of you will in my absence.
I thought you were helping the DJ?

as in helping him not play Joy Division or whatever...

Hey, Morrissey:
You look way better now than you did in your 20s.
Good job!

Also, thanks to a tip from hobopatrol, I ordered the a 7" singles box set that Rhino UK just re-issued with all the original picture sleeves. I don't care about tracking down all of the originals, I just want the artwork on those bad boys. I believe they have them at www.everythingenglish.com My last real spoiling myself type thing for records for awhile I think.

Oh, man, Tom, I've been thinking about ordering that Smiths 7" box set myself. So tempting.
Also, rumors of a Morrissey US tour in 2009 are swirling around.
Noodle, I had to do it. I will bring it over to jam or you can come over and enjoy. I am stoked to see him live again. Fingers crossed for 2009 tour that makes Mpls.

Remember when Morrissey was considered a possible threat to national security? Or when he reunited the New York Dolls? He has done so many amazing things in his life. Maybe next we will find out that he is Barack Obama.

4/6/09 at the State! Yes.
I'm going to try to make the Milwaukee and Chicago shows as well.

OH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may be in for those other shows too. Its about time he came back. I am going to try to get tix in first row!

I think I just heard Tom squeal like a little school girl all the way from dt St. Paul.

We should figure out where he is doing his pre-show meal. He likes to book veggie friendly places. Then we can get dinner with him and and and... blank about what things we wanted to talk with him about.

Me finally talking to Morrissey, "uh uh uh (freaking out) um... what's your favorite animal?" then nervously interrupting him (how rude) "can I hug you!??!??!"

MORRISSEY WEEKEND! Can't wait!
I'm listening to Years of Refusal right now. Thank you internet leakers. It's really good. I liked Ringleader of the Tormenters, his last album, quite a bit, but I think this might be better. Can't wait to hear these songs live.
The song "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore"... wow.

ooh... I want really bad!

Pre-sale for NYC tix in 2 min!!!!
how do you get a morrissey pre-sale?
when everyone becomes shy, I will run for King.
It is on the Ticketmaster site, but now the site is screwy and is acting like the shows are sold-out, which makes no sense. Or else, I'm going to have a major panic-attack. At least I'm sure I can see him at FOXWOODS CASINO.
MMmmm I 'heart' teh Morrissey SO MUCH.
I saw Mozzer at a casino in Atlantic City and it was still pretty good. I would love love LOVE to see him at Carnegie Hall!
Maybe Morrissey will play slots with me before?
I bet he plays roulette... or some kind of classy gambling. Is roulette classy? I don't know gambling very much!
Yes, roulette and/or craps are classy, I think. Something where he is in a tux and surrounded by gorgeous ladies (me). Then when he wins all the money on the table, he can declare that he is "too sad" to take it and then I will cash in his chips for him and go roll around in piles of money. Foxwoods Casino, here I come.
I LIKE TO IMAGINE THE WAY THAT MORRISSEY WOULD REACT TO CERTAIN SITUATIONS.
noodle, tix go on sale for the show in Milwaukee tomorrow although I don't know that there will be a massive rush considering the show there and Chicago both are general admission.
According to http://tour.morrissey-solo.com/, there is no date set yet for tickets to be sold in Chicago and Minneapolis. The Mpls ones are the only ones that are seated I believe. I have seen shows in the Aragon and Rave/Eagles ballroom and they open / general admission venues. I don't really care to pay for VIP seats and the VIP aren't any closer to the stage anyways.
"Nobody can be VIP in the harsh light of the day, Tom." - Morrissey, reactiing to you
His first words at my casino concert were making light of it as a venue, "Atlantic City, of all places!"
Don't know how I feel about this new record. That first song, he barely sounds like himself. Jerry Finn fucking sucks.

"These casino chips are about as worthless as my soul."
I don't think Morrissey would say that his own soul is worthless. The pathos in his music comes more from feeling unjustly slighted by the cruelty of the world than from self-loathing (c.f. "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," "How Soon Is Now?", "Seasick yet Still Docked" etc. etc.). Gawd, nobody understands him! No one but ME!!!!
The irony is that casino chips are worth money and money in this economy is KING so in that case, Morrissey's soul would be worth so much!
HoboPatrol,
PLEASE more hypothetical Morrissey responses. This is something I enjoy thinking about myself. I think it is time for...MORRISSEY FAN FICTION????

Morrissey at the humane society. He sees a guinea pig for adoption. WHAT DOES HE DO?

Quick: Morrissey on a tourbus somewhere in the Bible Belt. He finds himself in Aisle C4 of the local Walmart, trying to decide between two handsoaps. WHAT DOES HE DO?

"No soap can disinfect the heartache that I feel."

this is in response to David and Magma since I didn't know anything about him:
Jerry Finn was an American record producer. He was perhaps best known for his work with blink-182, as well as Morrissey, AFI, Bad Religion, Alkaline Trio, MxPx, Rancid, Green Day, Sum 41 and The Offspring.[2][3]
After suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in July 2008, Finn was taken off life support on August 9, 2008 after never regaining consciousness.[4] Finn died August 21, 2008.[1] At the time of his hemorrhage, he had just finished producing Morrissey's new record, Years of Refusal.
Wow, outside of Morrissey, he recorded some terrible stuff. I like the record so far as well as liked You Are the Quarry but the rest of the stuff is not at all my liking sonically or musically.
Huh, I had no idea Jerry Finn was dead. I would agree with David and Mag's opinion of him, though. I hated, hated, hated the production on You Are the Quarry. Quarry has some really great songs on it, but the production on that album makes it borderline unlistenable to me.
My initial opinion is that the production on this album is better, but I will hold out final judgement until I listen to it on something besides shitty computer speakers.
yeah and then he actually had good production on ringleader of the tormentors but didn't have any good songs!
noodle will argue with you on that one. I like the record ok, along with the new one and Your Are the Quarry but I am a Moz fan overall. I would have a hard time saying I totally hate something he did but they are not my overall faves. Many of the songs were amazing live.
Also, noodle, you are right, its not your b-day anymore is pretty wow.
Tony Visconti produced Ringleader, Mags. And that album has some great songs on it.
hmmm...i will listen to it again, i listened to it a couple of times when it came out...will listen again.
half of quarry is about the best stuff he'd done in years.
I like a lot of the tunes on Quarry. Too bad it sounds like shit.
Never bothered with the one after that. Maybe I should check it out.
I haven't gotten all the way through the new one, but aside from that song noodle mentioned, none of it is standing out to me. Sounds like Finn really had his way with the songs/melodies. Auto-Tune here and there too. No good.
Bring back Steve Lillywhite. Southpaw is probably my favorite solo Moz album.
noodle, you getting tix for the MKE show today? I don't know if I am going to worry about the show in MKE or Chicago considering its mostly standing/general admission. I can't imagine either will sell out right away anyways. It should probably be a PM but I will hit you up with an additional one as well. Road trip.
I saw him in Milwaukee when he was touring for "Quarry." Awesome shit. Not a fan of "Ringleader" at all, but he's my man and I stand by him and will gladly hand him my money or my babies no matter what.

Tom, I will see you there at noon.

no problem. The line was actually long. noodle, jess and I went 20 minutes early and waited for about 20 minutes to get to the front. Solace was smart and got there really early and got second row outside of pit. Our crew is row 8 and 11. Auspicious numbers.

More Morrissey live"
This is taken from his appearance on England's Jonathan Ross show yesterday. Strangely, Morrissey and his band are wearing exactly the same clothes they wore on the Jimmy Kimmel show, despite the two shows being more than a week apart and on different continents. I'm sure it's part of some obscure joke that's greatly amusing to Morrissey himself.
noodle,
I think they are wearing those same shirts on the inside of their new album too. Thanks for the vids. I just noticed them.
I had a mini heart attack when I saw Moz was canceling some shows but fortunately they were all in Florida so I could give a fuck. Enjoy your beaches and cocaine, we get Moz.
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
Noodle, you did not set me up for the fact they are playing This Charming Man on the Jonathon Ross show. If they play that on this tour I may pass out and/or cry. I don't care if the song does't have the same jangly guitar that is easily one of my favorite songs ever.

i really wish i could go to the mpls show.
not to be a hater though, but i really don't like these dudes he's been playing with.
he needs to bro-down with vini reilly again or someone cool and unique.
I just realized that I'm gonna be in Washington DC at the same time as Mozzer and I think it's already sold out. I hate internet non-words but this is a total :(:(:(!!!

Maybe I shoulda checked earlier, but I wasn't anticipating going to any big shows while I was there, but then I wasn't anticipating being able to see Mozzer!
Maybe there will be scalpers.

you'd be surprised what you can find for face value on craigslist sometimes, just ppl that have to be suddenly out of town etc
yeah, I am half thinking to depend on that for the Chicago show since the Aragon is so fucking big and the ticket master fees are so fucking stupid.

I'd disagree with this. Morrissey only made one album with vini reilly on guitar, Viva Hate, which I think has some of Morrissey's weakest, most forgettable songs. On the other hand, he's been playing with Boz Boorer for close to 18 years now (more than three times as long as he played with Johnny Marr). I think Boz's style, a sort of mix of rockabilly and glam rock, suits Morrissey perfectly and has come to define his solo style.
While I don't think the current line-up of his band quite reaches the heights of the Boz/ Alain Whyte/ Gary Day/ Spencer Corbin line-up of the Your Arsenal era, the live recordings I've heard of recent shows sound great. Matt Walker might be the best drummer Morrissey has ever played with.
Oh, and Tom, I'm glad you finally got to see that This Charming Man clip. I purposefully didn't mention it before, so that it would be a suprise.
noodle, it was such a good surprise. I am going to hold myself back from looking at set lists like you did last time around because I want to be surprised when they play it live if they do during one of the three shows. Lets fast forward two months!
I think Boz and Marr are his best composers. I always thought of Viva Hate as a Stephen Street album, because he did a lot of the best compositions like "Suedehead" and "Everyday is Like Sunday" although that is a matter of some dispute.
I am really sad to say that I like and appreciate Morrissey ! He would want it this way though if you think about it. What was that funny E! skit? Morrisey's dating show would be entitled: Hey, I love you but I know you could never love me so I should probably just end it" One show and it is fabulously and sadly/ironically over.
The best conclusion of a Mozzer dating show would be a friendship.
Is anybody trying to get rid of a ticket to this show? I just want somebody to sit by!
um, what do people think of the new record. I just got it this week so I don't really have an opinion yet, except for the songs that he was already playing like "Throwing My Arms Around Paris" and the two from the Greatest Hits record.
Morrissey is on Jimmy Fallon tonight, if anyone is inclined to stay up late.
I'm seeing Moz at Carnegie Hall tonight, bitches!
wow have fun! seeing something at carnegie hall sounds hella classy. wear a monocle.
I saw Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter & Savion Glover @ Carnegie and it was pretty awesome. I was as much in awe of the place as the groups. I was like that's where Judy Garland and Andy Kaufman had their best moments!
I know! I've never been to Carnegie. I need to leave work early to buy opera gloves. This is gonna set me up for disappointment when I see him again at Foxwoods Casino on Saturday night...
I announced my love earlier in this thread, but I re-bought "Your Arsenal" two weeks ago and DAMN it is sooooo fucking awesome.
mozzer is probably getting ready for his first Carnegie appearance! I really hope they do a special career retrospective show and release it!
so was it like Judy Garland?
I appreciate the fact that the new LP is relatively cheap in comparison to the last 2. I can definitely handle paying under $12 for a LP these days.
It was amazing! He wore a tux for the first part, then changed shirts throughout the rest. Opened with "This Charming Man," encored with "First of the Gang to Die." Also played "How Soon is Now," "Ask," and "Death of a Disco Dancer." SWOON.
And man, his security is TIGHT. One guy got up on stage and kissed him, and then a bunch of other people tried to rush during the last song, but his security was totally ON IT. I can only hope that my homies in Mpls are more stealth in your stage-jumping skillz. PRACTICE YOUR GRAVY-ROBBING TECHNIQUES NOW WHILE YOU STILL HAVE TIME.
it sounds like it was just a regular tour show. except it was at carnegie which is still pretty cool.
Yeah, it was. Nothing really different, except for the tux and him noting that he was playing "Carnegie Hall" every 15 minutes or so.
I think it would've been awesome if he had played orchestral versions of his best songs.
I hate his big Smiths hit "How Soon is Now?" even though he's thought it is his most progressive Smiths song and I guess I know what he means by that and respect his opinion on it. But I would love to hear that performed by Morrissey and an orchestra. I bet a lot of his songs could be adapted very beautifully, and Carnegie would be the ideal setting for something like that and he could release another greatest hits/live record (Morrissey repackaging his music? NO!)
I dunno... just an idea.
I hate morrisey.
Then get out of this thread. Haters to the left.
He's not for everyone. Some people like Glenn Gould. He's quite good too.
TONIGHT.
What time are folks thinking of showing up? The tickets say 7:30, and I don't go to a lot of shows at places like this, so I don't know how to gauge such things.
there's an opener, fwiw
The Courteneers
The Courteeners aren't too bad. They sound like The Walkmen but British. Moz was great on Friday and Saturday. I won't give too many spoilers at all. He wore a tux on Saturday.
JRN, the shows have all been running like this
Courteener 8:30pm
Moz 9-10:30pm
its pretty consistent. I may be up for some food or whatever prior to the show. I am meeting up with some of the folks I got tix for in advance I think. I am certain this will be the best of the three shows.
No one got on stage at all during the last two shows. I think this has to be rectified. I don't know if it is going to be me (likely not) but I am hoping noodle does.
Somebody's gotta represent in Mpls and jump up on stage and give him a hug. DO IT FOR THE KIDS. He hasn't been in the 612 since '99! MAKE ME PROUD TONIGHT, MRMBers!
yeah, I figure someone must because this is the first in three shows that it will be doable. The security at the State isn't that crazy versus the last two shows where they were ready. I am excited to watch the wildness ensue.
Yeah, there was massive amounts of stage invasion during Carnegie, but shit was tight at Foxwoods (being a casino and all). I'm so jealous that everybody is seeing him tonight!
I'd disagree with this. Morrissey only made one album with vini reilly on guitar, Viva Hate, which I think has some of Morrissey's weakest, most forgettable songs.
^^haha i can't BELIEVE i let noddle slide this one by.....noodz, my man....."late night maudlin street"?? "hairdresser on fire"??? heresy i say!
Mags, I would agree but Boz has been on board with TONS of Moz stuff that is pretty unstoppable.
yeah i like boz, finn was the true problem IMO.....i like a lot of the new records songs but everytime the guitars hit i think it's like an LA metal band or something
Viva Hate is pretty amazing IMO
Stephen Street did most of the songwriting on Viva Hate. He talks about it on his website.

Mags, I hate to say it in advance but that was sorta the bummer about the recent shows. Everything has that real "rock" feel to it that sorta doesn't mesh with what I like about that band. Morrissey brings it all together and there are some songs where they bring it down a bit and it rules too. But again, Moz can't go wrong.
Again, I am curious to see the reaction of folks on the board to the show. I talked a bunch about it with Noodle and Jessica on the weekend.
Also, lets start the count on how many different wardrobe changes he has during the set.

Stephen Street did most of the songwriting on Viva Hate. He talks about it on his website.
I think there is a dispute among Vinnie, Stephen, and Moz about the album to a degree.
aaaannyway, enuff of my fanboy bullshit! I'm sure this show will be fun and y'all will have a great time.
yeah... it's in dispute... but those sheets on his website seem pretty compelling... also it's very in keeping as a Stephen Street record.
It does rock out a bit too much, but my blind love of Morrissey stands in the way of me being overly critical.
Everything has that real "rock" feel to it that sorta doesn't mesh with what I like about that band.
I ain't never been a Morrissey or Smiths fan, but I think this latest album has been played around the house a lot, I see what tom means about the above, and, no sir, I don't like it.
(it being nü-Moz)
I hated the new album at first, but it has actually grown on me. Especially seeing the songs performed live gave me a different opinion about it as a whole. "When I Last Spoke to Carol" is a total jam!
"I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" is really good IMO
i take back anything i ever said about the smiths
"something is squeezing my skull is pretty good"
still, "first of the gang to die" is probably the only recent song of his that i think could hold its own on Bona Drag
It happens Howie. When I first heard Morrissey I didn't get it years and years ago but it sorta stuck with me. The more I learned and the more I listened the more I really dug and found it all to be great. If I had to tell someone to use a starting point with any of his stuff I would say either Your Arsenal of his solo stuff or a Smiths Singles collection (those are sooo unfuckwithable if they are put together in with any sense to them)
"The Right Morrissey Album"
Ruben & the Gits
I think "Irish Blood, English Heart" holds up to the earlier singles as well.
At the end of the day, You Are the Quarry is a fantastic record. I do dig the new one as well.
"You are the Quarry" is my favorite of the "new Moz" albums. It is solid all the way through. If you are gonna start with Smiths (better than solo Moz any day), start with "Smiths Singles," then move on to "The Queen is Dead."
cosigned with Hobopatrol although noodle has definitely sold me on the Moz solo stuff being far far better than people give it credit for and stands up well with Smiths albums (although the Smiths albums are better).
I think You Are the Quarry is the best of the new three but with that said, I would rather see him play songs off any records than the three new ones. I actually like a large portion of Maladjusted. Also, the early burglary years b-sides / live collection is pretty amazing too.
I think Your Arsenal is as good as any album the Smiths did save Queen is Dead.
and that's me trying to be "objective"
I would rank Mozzer comps (solo&Smiths)
Bona Drag
Hatfull of Hollow
Louder than Bombs
World of Morrissey
Mozzer albums (solo&Smiths)
The Queen is Dead
Your Arsenal
Strangeways, Here We Come
Viva Hate
Vauxhaul & I
The Smiths
Ringleader of the Tormentors
You Are The Quarry
Meat is Murder
Years of my Refusal
Southpaw Grammar
Maladjusted
Kill Uncle
I don't know too much about the live ones... I only have Rank and it's okay.
Bona Drag is probably the Moz solo I listened to the most
me too. love it... I listen to Bona Drag more than anything Mozzer has ever done.

Sorry, I thought I had typed in "Morrissey Rides a Cockhorse" as the title of my link.

If I knew you people were out there, I wouldn't have felt so alone in high school.
Although, you probably wouldn't have liked Morrissey as much.
This is true. Because then I would have had more friends and wouldn't have locked myself in my room with my Smiths records. Oh, the ironies of life.
:) seventh heaven. Best of the last three shows.

I totes touched the hand that touched god.
He played Life is a Pigsty and The World is Full of Bores which were great. I would love to see him before It's not your birthday anymore of the new stuff but it was a good finish to the last few shows. I am hoping next tour he does a lot of mixing it up with sets. I will gladly see him far more nights in a row if that is the case.
I also touched Tom's hand. WOW. Feelin' pretty special right now.
Also, the next time you guys go on a Morrissey road trip, count me in. Hopefully I will be richer then.

i listened to the smiths at work tonite, in honor of this show. i'm surprised how many of my co-workers are huuuuuuuges MOZ fans. whoa i just called him the MOZ. i've just changed sides

This night has opened my eyes...and made me wish for another really big show. I love roadtrips!
Just found this: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/morrissey/2009/state-theatre-minneapolis-mn-13d63579.html
I think memories of the show got mixed up in some dreams last night, and now I'm needing to correct myself of the notion that they played "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore". My sleeping brain decided to invent the memory, and I may allow it to stand in as the encore.

Last night ruled.
Anyone get any pics (or know where some can be found online)?
i really dug that huge bass drum and gong on stage..great show!
while last night's show didn't open my mind nearly as much as the first time i saw Nick Cave, it certainly made me more of a fan than I already was. i thought the show tailed off a bit by the end of the main set though. could have probably saved one of the bigger Smiths songs for the end rather than playing the 2 biggest ones in the first 4 songs. minor gripe tho
I feel sorry for this person:
Waited for Moz in the cold, but he wasn't in the mood to socialize and ran onto the bus. Great show anyway - thanks Moz for coming to Minneapolis again.
But all I wanted was an autograph and a cup of tea!

how were the courteneers?
The Courteeners are not as bad as some made them out to be. I think they sound like the Walkmen a lot which is not amazing but isn't bad. I like the walkmen ok and I like the Courteeners just fine. Its a hard bill to play and they did no harm so kudos to them.

The stage rushers really made the night complete for me, especially the one that went tumbling off the stage with the security guard.

i think everyone should know how awesome tom is. he, noodle and jessica kidnapped me in chicago and brought me to morrissey as a treat for my birthday. i protested, as the show was expensive and, i admit, do not even own one solo morrissey album. tom insisted. morrissey was mandatory.
the show was sold out when we got there leaving tom and i without tickets. for an hour, i shivered like a baby, silently cursing the weather and very willing to give up, while tom fuckin' hustled, worked some magic, and scored us two tickets, each at face value (to the dismay of the nasty scalpers trying to get double).
we went in and found noodle and jessica right away, enjoyed the last song of the opener and then morrissey kinda blew my mind. i loved the show. i totally loved it.
thank you very much!

I'm a little homesick for Monday's performance, and I now understand following the tour.
I tried to see if I could see myself up front during the encore. It was a slew of people and a bad angle on the video. I swear I could make out my arm.

I got one of these shirts.
I guess he played "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" in Kansas City last night. Shoot, I should have been following the whole tour.

Mozzer is having a tough tour. A fan threw some beer on him one and a half songs into his set and he called it a night. I hope that person got worked over. I've fought with fellow fans for articles of clothing, I can't imagine what I would do to someone who threw something at Morrissey.
you know what moz? i can *sort of* think my way out of thinking bengali in platforms and national front disco are racist but you know? maybe you are just a racist dickhead.
morrissey on chinese ppl
Man, this might be the worst Morrissey incident yet.
(I don't think "National Front Disco" is really racist... that song is so weird, though, I don't know what to make of it. What's the significance of "Disco" there? Bummer that it's such a politically suspect tune, since musically/melodically I think it's one of this best ever.)
All this Morrissey "might" be racist stuff just distracts from the real issue, his music is terrible!
I don't think he's racist, but it's an admittedly poor choice of words. Still, that same interview yielded this amazing photo:

i love morrissey. LOVE HIM!
he just cares about animals very much and hates people who abuses them.
"i would rather see a human be skinned alive than a dog or a cat, any day, any day, any day."
I hated Morrissey before it was cool
it's getting hard to cover for him at this point. still love his music. he is like celine dion before him... the greatest singer... in the world! ever!
Still love him and this article doesn't affect it. I get what he was trying to say and I think as he has in the past he wants to just be in the middle of controversy despite his outward enjoyment of it. The stories I have heard about Chinese zoos and the Chinese recent history with animals is pretty rough. Read the whole article too. It gives a bit more of an explanation.

i dont care much about morrissey, but i do hate the sound of his voice

Unless things have changed since his last one, that's Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer on the guitars, same dudes since Your Arsenal. (Whyte doesn't tour with him, but Boorer does.)
I think Years of Refusal has some good songs on it, though the production is awful (why he chooses to work with Jerry Finn is beyond me).
Anyway, the best recent Morrissey news was that he wanted to have his autobiography published by Penguin Classics because, quoth he, "I can't see why not."
Boz is still but Alain Whyte has been gone...some LA douche named Jesse Tobias that was in Red Hot Chili Peppers for a minute was 2nd guitar on Refusal. they worked well early on, but honestly i think that sound has run it's course and i would like him to work with someone a little more creative and offbeat style like marr or vini reilly (i fucking love vini reilly and he makes viva hate IMO)....someone that wasn't so power chord type stuff
agreed about Jerry Finn, one of the worst producers of all time. Wish Visconti had produced You Are The Quarry instead

haha yeah they are kinda the same person
yikes. Moz is a bit too sensitive about what people say about him. He wants to be adored but he doesn't want to deal with the criticism or people. I read the article and I could imagine that fan sites can be annoying at times but you take the good with the bad (much like with this board).
The reissue after reissue of Smiths stuff by Rhino is so dumb. I'm off that wagon. Most of the original pressing of stuff can be found pretty cheaply anyways.
The comment about McDonald's is very much Morrissey. He lives in his own world and is truly an eccentric.
i used to go to morrissey-solo a lot back when he was playing out stuff that ended up on You Are The Quarry live....the site's tone was super positive.....morrissey's problem is he's seeing comment threads on stories posted by the site's owner -- which are never negative -- and reading negative comments from random people and not understanding that it's not the owner saying it.
i swear i never saw a discouraging word on that site -- in terms of editorial content -- from the owner.
like i will always love the smiths and the first batch of solo stuff but eccentric is far to kind, he's petulant, manipulative, and just kinda seems like a bad person now IMO.
I wouldn't argue with any of those terms accept "bad".
replace 'bad' with 'insufferably douchey"
The comment about McDonald's is very much Morrissey. He lives in his own world and is truly an eccentric pretentious, narcissistic, sanctimonious asshole.
though i did listen to bona drag the other day and fuckin' a that is end-to-end burners!

I love me some Smiths, and he's got some serious talent but holy good goddamn, Morrissey always has been and always will be a gigantic buffoon.
He lives in a vacuum of himself.

I should be frank: The only reason I'm being an apologist (sorta) is because of the song "This Charming Man".
It was released a year after I was born. He wrote it about me. I'm charming as fuck.
I wish I could say that there's something that Morrissey could do to turn me away from my fandom, but after reading that article, I now realize that there isn't. Morrissey could probably anally rape Queen Elizabeth II while ranting about Empires, Animal Cruelty and whatever else his pet issues are and I still wouldn't care. That article is really awful behavior, and I'm not proud of the fact that I callously love this artist, but I just do. It doesn't even make sense to me.
I just really like his music. I love the expressiveness of his vocal performances and relate to the lyrics. He's easily my favorite singer.

Also, this guy seems like a piece of shit

howie, the difference is that Morrissey dresses better and doesn't need to hide his face like a juggalo.
Singles are pretty good but Queen is Dead is the best of the albums. I would then say Strangeways or Louder Than Bombs (it's a singles collection but tracks that aren't on any of the full length albums). Meat is Murder is pretty solid throughout. s/t is the only one that I don't listen to with frequency.
Morrissey solo stuff is all solid through Maladusted in my mind. I haven't loved any of the albums since the comeback with You Are the Quarry but there are at least 2-3 songs on each record that I really like and a bunch of b-sides that are rad.

I've got all 4 studio albums on wax and love them all. However, I still think he's few turds away from being a total sack of shit like Ted Nugent. On a similar note, it should also be worth mentioning that I consider "Stranglehold" to be one of the best fucking rNr songs of all time.

overall Louder than Bombs and Bona Drag are the two best collections of songs Morrissey has ever been involved in by a large margin, singles comps do him well for whatever reason.

Moz's response:
The recent killings in Norway were horrific. As usual in such cases, the media give the killer exactly what he wants: worldwide fame. We aren't told the names of the people who were killed-- almost as if they are not considered to be important enough, yet the media frenzy to turn the killer into a Jack The Ripper star is.... repulsive. He should be un-named, not photographed, and quietly led away.
The comment I made onstage at Warsaw could be further explained this way: Millions of beings are routinely murdered every single day in order to fund profits for McDonalds and KFCruelty, but because these murders are protected by laws, we are asked to feel indifferent about the killings, and to not even dare question them.
If you quite rightly feel horrified at the Norway killings, then it surely naturally follows that you feel horror at the murder of ANY innocent being. You cannot ignore animal suffering simply because animals "are not us."
I sorta figured this is what he meant by his comment and sure, it's going to get a rise out of people but considering he is looking for a new label, I'm sure he felt like he shouldn't shy away. He wanted the attention and got it.

I'm in Chicago right now and I think he came early for his show this week to hang out and meet up with me since I can't make the show. I'm not going to the show but maybe we'll see him at the Chicago Diner today. One can hope.
can he still hack it live (vocally?) his last couple albums have more auto-tune than a t-pain record
also: has anyone bought the new smiths remasters (the ones marr oversaw?) really curious how they sound
He was in fine voice when I saw him here in 2009.
good to hear, the blantant pitch correcting on stuff like "someone is squeezing my skull" really rankles me, it sucks that he works with such bad producers (except visconti) lately
and that band backing him now....yeeeesh.
Hoo boy, it looks like he's been closing sets on recent dates with "Meat is Murder" set to footage of animal cruelty. I don't know if I can handle that.
He was pretty good in Chicago tonight. Sadly, he did do "Meat is Murder" as described above, and it was awful (though it was also a showcase for the band at their loudest/noisiest, which would have been cool otherwise), but at least he didn't close the set with it.
He played lots of songs not heard the last time around in Minneapolis--"I Want the One I Can't Have" (set opener), "There Is a Light..." (played strangely early in the set, maybe third or fourth), "Satellite of Love", "I Know It's Over," "Speedway", "Ouija Board", and "Still Ill" (encore) included.
The one new song, "Scandinavia," did not come off well IMO.
He seemed kinda fatigued, but giving it his best, and generally getting stronger up to the encore, which was really amazing.
oooh, Speedway would be great to hear live.
ahahaha, great link! Total sucker for this stuff.

Awesome.
huh weird clear lake, must want to put buddy holly to rest.
fyi, my uncle got married in clear lake it's not all that far if you're interested.
though, who the fuck is gonna go see morrissey around there? that's could be a potentially weird ass/cool vibe.
yeah, plus i'd imagine it's all GA?
it's bigger than i expected though... says current capacity is 2100
but you're right, it could be a very very intimate show for him depending on turnout
I grew up in the general area, clear lake can't be more than 10k, probably less, around there is just farm country
No idea who would show up, maybe some latinos?
tickets in Minneapolis are $40-75 before fees :(
and Mags... there are a lot of migrant workers in Iowa... (that's racist)
man. i had no intention of seeing morrissey but my mom's house in my hometown is sitting vacant (still with beds and stuff though) which is about an hour from clear lake
that show could be off the chain bizarre.
Ames, IA is pretty close to Clear Lake but it's about halfway between Des Moines and Minneapolis. I'm planning on going and buying tix on Friday.
Does Moz have a new record before this tour? I'm hoping that he does not because it means he'll focus more on the "classics" and/or Smith stuff for the crowd especially since he hasn't been to fucking Iowa in probably forever (if ever). SOLD.
whoa party at magma's house!
if i can afford/get the time to do this, i'll let y'all know could be fun
as far as i know there is no new record coming out
He's still without a label deal, so no new record in the immediate future. He says he has an album's worth of new material written, but he doesn't play most of it in concert to fend off bootlegging.
So apparently the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake is the same venue that Buddy Holly played his last show at. I'm sure playing there is a very intentional homage on Morrissey's part.
^^ yep. they played that last gig just over 3 months before Moz was born
The <a href="https://www.surfballroom.com/"Surf Ballroom</a> looks amazing. I'm pretty sure I saw a thing on TPT about this place and the continuing tradition of big band type dances with the most awesome olds ever.
Tom is correct (of course) that tickets go on sale on Friday. $35 advance/$40 door.
missed a >
damn... that's tempting considering the high price of the Mpls tickets
I wish goat claw was a part of the production crew so they could sing a duet together at some point during the set.
haha
man driving down to iowa going to see Morrissey would be so much fun!
get into work, brah.
it's boring here right meow.
i still got at least 45 minutes. donuts still there?
yuuuuuuup
Noodle is set for my car to drive down to Clear Lake. Magma? You wouldn't even have to take off work. It's a weekday but we could leave right after work and I imagine the show is done by midnight.
Solace, I think the price was easily that much last time around as well. This will be the 3 time Moz has played the Twin Cities in the last 15 or so years so this isn't a regular occasion. Is anyone going to get in line early on Saturday to get tix? Last time it helped me get crazy good tickets. I'd rather not wait in line and would pay someone extra but may anyways and skip a work thing.
got tix for the surf
sneak me in. cut a hole in the fence.
F&F, ditto! Stoked for that show and excited to see him there and at the Orpheum.
Clear Lake is looking like the way to go. I sat in the balcony the last time he played in a theater in Minneapolis (might have been the Oprheum), and while it was fun, the sound wasn't too great. And I don't know if I can afford floor tickets.
got tickets for the surf ballroom. online service charge was only $1 (per order, not per ticket).
SO...debating making the drive instead of the Orpheum. The surf is so iconic and includes adventure...whereas the orpheum (nver been) has ease and beauty too. Then there's the idea of work the next day....
Last time around tickets upstairs and downstairs were the same price. I'm not sure if that will be the case with the Orpheum. It's a big bummer that it is a seated show again but that is also why I am glad to be headed to the show in Iowa. The stage invasions are going to be crazy I'm betting. Either way, I'm going to both. The tickets for the Clear Lake show are pretty reasonable and it's general admission!

Last time around tickets upstairs and downstairs were the same price.
Well dang. I got my tickets late, so I guess it didn't matter much.
I lined up early to get them when they went on sale and they had the best tickets reserved for the box office. Plus you save on fees picking them up direct.
pretty pumped to get to see him at surf ballroom. never seen him before!
stood in line for the presale this morning and got two pit tickets for minneapolis. also got a pit ticket for the show in lincoln and a ticket for the show in clear lake. might try columbus and chicago as well.
Dang dude. How much did those pit tickets run you?
Tickets are already on sale??
got mine for IOWA. stoked. I have never seen him live, despite my smiths obsession for a bit; he doesn't play smiths songs. But I think this might be his last go around. Very Waylon Jennings of me to say that I hope he clutches his heart and has a 50+year moment on stage? But really, I'm excited for so many reasons to see the Moz.

I saw him last month in Cali and roughly half the set was Smiths songs—so you maybe in luck. Also people have been speculating he is going to retire after every tour he does.
I know. He keeps on. Excited to hear some smiths but it will be weird without the marr. I think he has had some health issues lately tho. He may want to die on stage.
Morrissey is the only time I've been 86'd from a show.
It's also the only time I've called a woman a cunt.
If he is going to ascend into heaven like Elijah, it seems like the Surf Ballroom would be the point of departure.

Tickets are already on sale??
There were presale tickets that you needed a password when buying them at the box office. I got pretty good seats but might rush the pit area anyway—it happened at the Stockton show.
Sage statement by corngrid.
I don't think Moz has <i>ever<i> refrained from playing Smiths songs in his solo sets.
I thought early on he didn't play Smiths song, so when he did start playing some around the Oye Esteban tour or maybe one tour before that... it was sort of a big deal. But maybe that's just a misunderstanding of what I was readiing on message boards at the time.
The pit area got rushed during the encore at the State. Moz touched my hand. It was awesome.
I've seen Moz play 4 times and every time he has played Smiths songs. He opened the Years of Refusal tour with This Charming Man every night. It sounded way more crunchy but still kinda ruled. He opened the tour between Quarry and Ringleader with The Queen is Dead. He played Ask and covered Bowie at the Omaha show as well. Morrissey solo usually lists all of the set lists for each tour and they rarely change much from show to show. The best of his three sets I saw on the last tour was the Mpls show.
I know that they typically hold good tix for those who wait in line. Noodle got us tix that are first row after the pit in the center!!!! Noodle is my hero!!
@JRN it was $150 for two which is not too bad considering the pit ticket I got for Chicago this morning was almost $100 by itself after ticketmaster fees
@Killer McHann, the earliest he started playing Smiths songs outside of the Wolverhampton gig in 88 with Rourke and Joyce was the 97 Maladjusted tour and he gradually incorporated them more and more to where now they can be about 1/3 of the set.
Ha! Shows what I know. I wouldn't have guessed it took him that long to start throwing Smiths stuff in there. But I guess he was pretty prolific in his solo career from the start, so he wasn't hurting for material.
Got tickets today. This will be my 8th time seeing morrissey. I plan on getting tickets for Iowa too, but need to wait for the next paycheck.
I rushed the pit at the state and tried to get on stage to hug him, but did not make it far. Moz and I held hands for a few seconds and then I cried non stop for the next six days.
you guys know a lot. I am generally mistaken. I'm excited. This magic that happens when touching Morrissey is intense. I hope I can touch him.

Morrissey is the only time I've been 86'd from a show.
It's also the only time I've called a woman a cunt.
DETAILS! DETAILS! DETAILS!
I want to know this info too.
@goat claw one of the security guards at the state practically gave me a piledriver off the stage, those dudes were brutal! the orpheum show will be my 8th as well. i've touched/shook hands a few times and have gotten a few set lists but would really like a piece of the shirt (or the whole thing). got in a brawl over one at one of the shows at the aragon in chicago a few years ago. all things morrissey related are fucking insane.
I have a piece of a shirt. Its beautiful. It used to smell like his cologne.
so um.... that Stooges/Mozzer show in LA... who opens?
Talking about his upcoming memoir and talking about different people from his life in music:
Amazingly, it's not my business to make anyone else's life worse. Although, God knows, I've tried.
I read a book of interviews with him years ago and it's amazing. His interviews are so hilarious and fun.
Who's heading to the Surf Ballroom Oct. 30th to see Morrissey in Iowa?
I'm more excited for this show than the Mpls event, as the setlist is way more likely to include some of the classics, such as:
Girlfriend In A Corncob
Some Kernels Are Bigger Than Others
Husk In Glove
The Boy With The Cob In His Side
How Soon Is Niblet?
and, my favorite,
Heaven Knows I'm Maize-erable Now
never been a huge fan, but i'd be lying if i said i wasn't jealous of all you folks heading down for the Surf show
planning on going!
we reserved a booth!
Do they do bottle service at the Surf Ballroom?
!!
That is what I imagine Morissey fans look like
ahahaha, f&f, mags, noodle and I are going to bum rush your table.
I've already hired a gang of buddy holly look-a-likes to fortify the booth. they've been instructed to rave on anyone that steps to us.

So-Called "Buddy Holly" gang clashes with haircut sadsacks at historic venue
love this guy.
the rhythm section is just as important as moz / marr
yeah i don't like how people are acting that you can do this w/o rourke and consider it the same band
I think a Smiths reunion in 2012 is a bad idea in general. I don't care who all is playing or not playing, I'd rather let the myth and records be the legacy of the band.
seen a bunch of links on fb about 4 smiths shows in the uk next year. let me go find one real quick.
link
i bet it doesn't happen.
amen, tom.
i wish more bands thought that way.
Tevs bro you were all deeshed texting me at 3 AM like "Dude SAUNA reunion COME ON"
SAUNA is one of those rare bands where the myth is considerably weaker than the actuality.
if anything, the members of the smiths prove that hatred is more powerful than money
exactly. In an odd way, it shows a rare moment of conviction in the music business. I don't mind reunions at all but there are some where the cash in element is so obvious when you see the band on stage.
haha not so sure it's conviction as much as just petulance! but i will be surprised if they do it. plus it feels like this is the "big Glastonbury" rumor like every 2-3 years
o'rourke?
yeah ppl are crazy to think morrissey will ever do it
I kind of thought sooner or later he'd just have to say it.
i respect him more for never considering it, no matter how many incentives promoters offer.
set list from Moz's first show of this tour looks promising with a lot of songs he definitely didn't play on the last two tours I saw him on including Speedway.
Morrissey would have to get to a point where he needed the money and it doesn't look like that will ever happen. Its funny because all his fans buying his records, going to his solo shows, and supporting him in other ways are the actual means to their not being another Smiths show. If Mozzer needed to cover the mortgage, I bet he would make nice (even with the drummer).
bummer news. Moz's mom isn't doing well. He post-poned part of the tour up to Chicago and has post-poned the rest of it as well. This means shows won't be happening next Mon in MN and Tues in IA. :( Major bummer for Moz and those of us who were eager for these shows.
i just don't know... what.. i have been almost in tears. worst news.
man sad for moz :(

moz played a new song on letterman last night:
http://youtu.be/tQAKetuk_Yc
his voice sounds off, but hopefully it'll be in better shape by feb 5th
yeah, those live TV programs tend to bring out his "aging" voice. He's fun as shit live and looking forward to the Minneapolis and Iowa show. I'm glad there is some spacing!
all bands pretty much sound horrible on TV shows
i didn't think his voice sounded that bad
though, man, his songwriting these days gets really tedious, it's like standard verse, then you know you're getting this kinda wonky chorus that repeats the song title over and over :/
He really does seem like he's writing from song titles more than ever these days. And I can't really imagine someone not familiar with him seeing that performance and saying "wow, so that's Morrissey? I must know more!"
I have had "Action Is My Middle Name" stuck in my head on and off since Tuesday night, though.
like no offense to boz & company, boz played on some great records, but i really wish morrissey would work with a really distinctive musician again, like johnny marr or vini reilly, or even a producer like stephen street, who might PUSH him a bit....dudes bands are so Rock Music and have been for a long time.
mags, agreed x 1,000,000
also lots of times the music and words don't feel that in harmony, like those dudes just write a Rock Song and then Moz comes by and shoehorns lyrics to fit with the structure or something?
I just realized I have an original factory release of the durutti column's "vini reilly" lp with a ultra rare one sided 7" featuring a collaboration between "stephen patrick" and vini. very nice!
agreed that he needs to step out a bit more.
how dare you question the golden child?
<3 durutti column so much

If anyone is interested in two tickets to the Cedar Lake, Iowa show on Saturday Feb 5th, I'm having second thoughts on the trip as I hate driving, especially in Winter. I'd probably part with them for slightly less than face value. $70 for the pair delivered to you in MSP. It'll be $80 at the door.
Fuck, not Saturday - TUESDAY - TUESDAY
mags, so with you. I like a few songs on his last few records quite a bit but there is a lot that could benefit from getting a different batch of characters playing with him. If he and Marr could play together but not as the Smiths, I'd be in to it.
Bundt, Solace and mags were thinking of going. I'll point them to the thread. Noodle and I are driving and those guys were both planning on going. Still working on throwing an after party that night but venue options have been bleak.
Thanks, tom. I'd $60 and a hamburger for the pair.
Lex Pretend would be so proud to see a thread w/ Magma hating on Rock Songs
haha well i mean they are pretty bad Rock Songs, i like rock songs

I rescind my offer to sell. I'm gonna go to Iowa. I'm gonna see Mozz. I'm gonna spend the night in serene Clear Lake.
the other night in columbus he subbed maladjusted for alma matters. REALLY hope that doesn't happen in minneapolis. would love to see maladjusted, really underrated track.
Very sorry to hear he's still doing "Meat Is Murder" with the slaughterhouse video. Not looking forward to sitting through that again.
haha, I haven't seen him do Meat is Murder. I'd be fine with it but sadly, Moz cancelled his show tonight in Michigan. It doesn't bode well for tomorrow night at all. If he cancels tomorrow night, I'm hoping he at least keeps the Iowa date. :(
Also, those of you going to the show tomorrow (if it happens), there will be an after-party at Grumpy's DT with all Smiths / Moz related tunes throughout the evening. Check it out

It's my least favorite, but I would sit through it played over and over again just to hear "Sheila Take a Bow." Would still love to see him live.

do you like the smiths zom?
At first I didn't like them. I was selling CDs to hi-fi shops in 1985 and at first I was like WTF.. this is horrible.. but then they grew on me. Ms. Zom loved them, we have all of their stuff.
I really love Marr's guitar playing and grew to dig the band quite a bit.

cool, one of those bands i could see you going either way on

haha.
We decided to cancel the after-party as well since there is no "before" show. We'll definitely be booking an after-party as soon as it is re-scheduled. Fingers crossed Moz and company are healthy by Feb. 2nd for the Iowa show.

not that he's a terrible human, just that he can basically do ANYTHING he wants and his fans will more or less refuse to call bullshit.
i'd lump Prince in there, too.

like, he's probably an ass, but to my knowlege he has never made any of the insane public statements that varg or moz have.
LOOK IT WAS A SWEATY ANALOGY, OK? I"M SORRY
Mags, they are saying shows will be re-scheduled at this point right now. Given Chicago dates are included in the mix, I'm betting he does reschedule.
does moz do smiths songs when he plays live?
yup. A bunch. Between the several times I have seen him live, he's played 5-8 different ones. The Smiths songs on this tour are different than last tour here as well. He's been adding them in piece by piece since the late 90s. I believe Noodle mentioned that people were really excited in 1998 (or 1999) when he played the Quest and busted out a few including Shoplifters of the World.

AWESOME! I have nothing going on that night as of right now although Thurston Moore is playing the Triple Rock with his new group. Mozzer wins out. Magma, this si going to be fucking awesome.

Goat claw knows how to party. As long as the main acts shows up.
so true.
I guess in a pinch you are also pretty good at making your own fun. Better than most. Certainly better than me.
I'd pinch gc for a shot at the 22nd. Check yer facebooks, fancy man.

Morrissey commenting on the death of Margaret Thatcher :
"Thatcher will only be fondly remembered by sentimentalists who did not suffer under her leadership, but the majority of British working people have forgotten her already, and the people of Argentina will be celebrating her death. As a matter of recorded fact, Thatcher was a terror without an atom of humanity."
Morrissey may be wrong about a lot of things, but he knows what's up when it comes to Tory politicians.

She actually makes a decent point, though she does it with the worst tone possible, her real mistake, given Morrissey's love of Eastern cultures, was mentioning Buddha.

amanda palmer should be euthanized

This is so...awkward. it reads like a journal entry. I guess Neil couldn't proofread this for her, he was toobusy writing shitty Doctor Who episodes.
I’ve bought tickets to see you lots of times
And once or twice, it worked out.
I like the part where she e,plains twitter to Morrissey like he's a senior citizen.
I also like how she managed to work in the amount of followers she has.
I'm saddened to have shared an idea with a.p.
At least you don't share eyebrow chic.....
SC, that was the worst part of it. She talks about her fans in a way that make you feel like she's doing it to leverage attention. What music I've heard by her is pretty awful and she just grasps at straws to stay in the limelight.
