Official SXSW can not officially sanction this event, in fact it is designed specifically to not conflict with official SXSW showcases. I've pitched a similar MN showcase to them, which they were interested in, but because restrictions on number of official shows that a band can play and other scheduling conflicts it doesn't appear like a possibility. There is still a chance that certain bands can be put on a showcase before the Feb. 1 deadline, that aren't already committed to other labels and sponsored showcases, but I think they were more interested in a possible tapes n' tapes performance than anything else. We'll see what happens.

Soapy Kittens posted this on Jan 24th, 2008 at 07:25:49 am
My sister told me a hilarious story about a ZZ Top rumor a couple years back at SXSW - that they were playing on the roof of a warehouse somewhere. Since sometimes SXSW rumors are actually true and nobody wants to be the guy that missed ZZ Top on a roof, there were like 400 people there and it turned out to be a cover band. Texas loves ZZ Top so much!

isaidsubtle posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:17:55 am
How much money do you think one realistically needs for this?

It takes about 7 hours to drive to the TC. I could fly for about $120 round trip. Then, how many hours to Austin? Maybe Soapy would like to take the scenic route and pick me up in Chicago? Eh? Eh???

You could meet Soapy half way and find a place to leave your car for a week in Des Moines then get your car on the way back. Its hike down there but a ton of people have done it over the years. According to Mapquest it is 17 1/2 hours. That is a reasonable two day drive or one fairly balls out drive.

isaidsubtle posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:39:41 am
17.5 hours....damn, that's a lot of hours. Ok, let's go back to the money thing. What do you think, tom? How much should one have ready, excluding the transportation there and back?

Soapy Kittens posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:43:41 am
Hmm...

Cost depends on how many people are in a car.

It's like 1200 miles, divided by say, 35 mpg, equals about 35 gallons of gas, which is like, say, $110 each way. Divide that three ways (in a regular car 3 is probably ideal), you're lookin at $80/person for travel.

germ war posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:44:35 am

tom posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:46:09 am
$180-200 for a wristband (although this can be optional if you want to roll with the free stuff that goes on). Food each day - $20 (can be much cheaper or nearly free depending on where you end up during the day). Booze - Day parties it is free but if you want to drink at night, you have to plan accordingly. Hotel $40 or so a night. Transportation - Cabs can be necessary at times but staying in town helps the cause quite a bit. I would say $10 a day could be safe. Again, there are definitely ways to do things on the cheap and I plan on doing it as much as possible.

maramar posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:47:06 am
"road snacks"

Soapy Kittens posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:47:10 am
It's really about 22 hours. Definitely a two day drive unless you have tons of crystal meth.

I'd budget $50/day for random shit at a minimum. You could get by on less, but it would be less fun. Or more fun depending on how balls-out you are.

maramar posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:48:54 am
So at the low end, including travel, you're looking at over $500 (not including booze) for three nights. Right?

Soapy Kittens posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 06:52:18 am
Well, yeah. I'd include booze in that $50, though. You can get creative.

OH SHIT the wristband. Also something you can do without if you're a badass.

Road snacks are like $50/eighth.

A carload of people can totally make it in one shot. We did it with just two several years back. Your SXSW experience just won't be complete minus being trapped with other people's bad breath, farts, crankiness, complaints about being sore, etc. for 18 hrs. Plus it's impossible to get lost on the way.

tom posted this on Jan 25th, 2008 at 07:06:26 am
yeah, I have driven to Olympia with one person in the car in 23 1/2 hours so you can definitely make that hike in 17 if you switch drivers. If you start early afternoon after a good night sleep you drive through the rest of the day and arrive the next night ready to enjoy the night life before sleeping hard as fuck!

I drove two years in a row. First year was easy for some reason. I found a bunch of pretty believable bling in the garbage of a men's bathroom at a gas station in the middle of the night somewhere in Oklahoma. It was on the way down and i wore it the whole weekend and on special occasions since. Second year we got trapped in a blizzard on the way back which was terrifying and we were forced to pull over and get a hotel for the night. The highway was littered with cars in the ditch. Last year I flew and I don't think I can go back to the car. If you like going to a zillion shows. But you can strategically party if you hit the online free show lists a week or two before hand and get your RSVP in effect.

pm, did that "tricky" cd stuff ever work out? Or rather, did the Noiselands cave in to my demands?

When can I have a copy of it in my tiny hands?

Also, I'm absurdly excited for this trip...if only I can get all my Flatstock shit together in time. I hope all of you Twin Citieses come by to look at me peddling my wares if the day party scene's got you down.

I was told the CDs will be done tomorrow. I have been let down before. I'm assuming everything will work out.
It's not that my glass is half full, I'm just not thirsty.

I'm really excited for flatstock, possibly more than the music. I'm going to buy all the busty, topless, devil horn/tail chick posters I can find.

Yeah, 4 realz, thanks everybody for generally being awesome. To tom and pm for helping me get to/from the airport and for asking me to co-host, ultra big thanks. And Tom, I still owe you a drank.

I'm bummed I had to miss this 'cause of Flatstock. I mean, that was cool too, but I missed out on seeing most of the STNNNG dudes and all of the Vamp Hands dudes and a whole bunch of other people that I woulda liked to have high-fived in Tejas.

And I bet everyone played awesomely too.

back to the shit
