Mark E Smith quotes:

If I could change one law I would reverse the smoking ban immediately. I was in a pub last Saturday night, just having a quiet pint, and this fella gets his baby out and changes its nappy on the table next to me. That would have never happened before the smoking ban.

I don't like being told what a safe drinking limit is. They just want us to stay in and eat turnips.

"HEREWITH annual May missive message from I, Mark E. Smith
on this day of celebration/reformation:

ANOTHER year has passed - rapidly for some, too slowly for I,
one-legged yet again.
And yet, things re: The Fall improve, our new label, although young, are coping just about with 'The Fall".
Yea, in a Castleford studio built on gravel the group cracked down some odd things.
The main concern to avoid the much-ripped off already 'Imperial'.
Our next record will be something that scum like that choke on.
We will not be playing 'I.O.W.' 'FEST' either but will play the Mojo sick-trio.

STICK ENEMIES IN FRONT OF DAYTIME T.V.

news that's sure to delight The Classical:

Another Smith & Blaney album -- The Train part 3 -- out soon on Voiceprint. And another in a string of remarkable press releases from the label:

Mark E Smith has been called a Maverick over the last thirty plus years he has led the Fall. Many people have tried to bend Mark E Smith to their will and failed time and time again. If making music under your own terms and whenever and with whomever you want then Mark E Smith is a maverick. Plainly speaking Mark E Smith does what he wants and you are either with him or against him. If you are against him then the relationship is usually terminated as many former members of the Fall can attest. Mark E Smith has a clear idea of what he wants and an even clearer idea of what he doesn't want.

Ed Blaney was a member of the Fall during late 2000-2001 playing on the album Are You Are Missing Winner released in late 2001.

In 2008 Smith and Blaney embarked on what seemed like a spontaneous project recording and releasing a number of limited edition singles. These singles were then collected together and released on an album entitled The Fall's Mark E Smith and Ed Blaney.

Train is the second album recorded by the duo outside of the Fall activities.

Mark E Smith and Ed Blaney's latest collaboration carries the title The Train part 3 and is described as an Open Street Recordings of the past present and future.

Recorded in October Nov3ember and December 2008 these are field recordings that have been edited in the studio. The recordings were made in Blackpool, Salford, York and shire, the midnight train from Sophia-Karnobat (Bulgaria) and finally edited in Blueprint Studios Salford by Gary Hadfield under the production supervision of both Mark E Smith and Ed Blaney.

The collaboration will no doubt appeal to the large and dedicated Fall fan base and also lovers of audio-verite.

Our Future -- Your Clutter is pretty great, though Our Past -- Your Clutter is a little more accurate in my case.

He must have fewer teeth by now.

I bought Palace of Swords Reversed first, so I got hooked in about a minute. (If you like jerky, shouty stuff, it's got some very high-quality that.) So I ran out and bought a heap of Fall records and got un-hooked by the almost-sameness of them all. Then one day years later, those suddenly all sounded good and distinct from each other, so I bought more again, and the same thing happened again. I'm on about round five of thinking it's all awesome, but that "What fucking record is this?" feeling is loitering nearby.

The way to love the Fall is by almost not listening to them, maybe.

One of the best, if not the best, Fall book I've read, is The Fallen, which tracks down every single person who ever played in the band for their story. In its blind-men-describing-an-elephant way -- and despite the author's insertion of himself and the dissolution of a relationship into the story -- it winds up painting a fuller picture of MES over the course of the decades than the other band bios that are out there.

One day Mark E. Smith is walking down a street (in Salford, I think) and he sees a little girl crying. He asks her what’s wrong and she says she’s lost her teddy bear. So he says, ‘Don’t worry. He’s gone touring with a rock band.’ The little girl calms down and every now and again Mark would send a postcard from Mark E. Bear from a variety of destinations. He kept this up until she was 28.

Its available in the usual places on the web (like the third hit on when you Google the album title). Only had a chance to listen to it once last night, I don't know if I'm quite ready to annoit it a "return to form" or "best album of the post-Hanely era" or whatever I've seen out there, but it is certainly good.

And weird. Heavy on the synth action and not just little flourishes here & there, but as a lead instrument. Parts had me thinking of Light User or Levitate.

Its sounds weird in spots and I think this is first Fall record in awhile w/ an appearance by the infamous hand-held tape recorder.

In a way its the most "Fall-esque" record they've made in some time.

In the end it seemed like a more focused/better vers of what (I think anyway) they've were trying to do w/ the last couple.

So early on I'm saying good, but no clue as to how it sits in the canon yet.

"Bury" is the new "Blindness." What an amazing track. The slowly-unfolding-increase in audio dynamics is a masterful way of racheting up intensity; props to the production team on that one.

I think the album's at least as good as Fall Heads Roll, and better sequenced at that. The last few records had pretty weak opening songs -- whether because they would've sounded better somewhere in the middle, or just outright weak -- but "YFOC Showcase" makes for a great kickoff. And while even some of the better Fall albums are front-loaded (Light User Syndrome, The Unutterable, etc), this one ends on a sublime and surprisingly emotional note.

Pretty strong record, this.

Cowboy George, Chino, and Weather Report 2 are all rather brilliant, affecting songs. I love how everything's mixed, too. The beginning of Chino, especially, sounds amazing through headphones.

Man, Weather Report 2 is haunting. The way the wistful opening gets subsumed by the grim, electronic murk that dominates the bulk of the song is really powerful, not to mention the way the lyrics confront mortality. And that whispered ending "...you don't deserve rock and roll,..." followed by an intake of breath. Just...wow.

really well-written consideration of MES' narrative lyrics

No band's work has ever been so tempting and so frustrating for music writers: so swollen with meaning and yet so hard to read from a “proper” critical distance. Flash to 24 hrs later, second night of the tour, reports are totally gang-busters, played all of the new record, soudning tight etc, MES only forgot a normal amount of lyrics, "best all Fall gig evah", etc, etc

Always different, always the same

Indeed, though really I'd be more surprised if they had stayed on Domino...in fact we're lucky that Mark didn't just leave before the album even came out like he did to Mute, which is usually how he reacts when the label tells him to spend more time on a record.

The Fall's Mark E Smith: 'I threw a bottle at Mumford & Sons'

"We were playing a festival in Dublin the other week," he told Australian magazine Brag. "There was this other group warming up in the next sort of chalet, and they were terrible."

He added: "I said, 'Shut them cunts up,' and they were still warming up, so I threw a bottle at them. The band said, 'That's the Sons Of Mumford [sic] or something, they're Number Five in charts!'. I just thought they were a load of retarded Irish folk singers."

This Nation's Saving Grace box out in January

I picked-up the Wonderful and Frightening World of...The Fall box this wknd and was blown away but the quality of the remaster & the quality of the packaging. Nice mini-lp sleeves, nice bound booklet, 4 cds and for pretty cheap as well.

Basically changed my opinion on a record I've always been pretty "meh" about, the new master def highlights that clattering/bruising qualities of the rhythm section. Sounds great.

The wonderful This Nation’s Saving Grace – Omnibus Edition was released today. For those who ordered early, well done, you should be enjoying your copy right now.

However, we now have a temporary stock problem and here’s the brilliant excuse. One pallet was wrongly off-loaded in Hong Kong and the ship sailed without it. Realising the mistake the albums were hoisted onto another container ship which ran into a severe tropical storm and got badly delayed. Some say this has now docked safely in the UK and will be trucked over to our distributors shortly but, if it’s not there by tomorrow, I’ll tell you about the Somalian pirates who, at this very moment, are grooving to all the versions of Cruiser’s Creek.

"How I Wrote 'Elastic Man"" and "Wings" are easily two of MES's greatest moments lyrically and it fascinating to hear the band morph from shambling/clattering/verging-on-disaster (the rhythm section total meltdown during "Totally Wired") to bruising punishment battalion ("Kicker Conspiracy") is fascinating, even if, like me you've heard these songs a thousand times.

THE FALL "Ersatz G.B." to be released on CD
in the US on December 6, 2011
via Cherry Red Records and MVD

Ersatz G.B. is the new studio album from The Fall, the 29th in their impressive canon. As with any Fall recording, Ersatz G.B. retains many of the group's most distinctive elements, whilst offering a fresh take on Mark E. Smith's familiar style and subject matter.

The line-up on the album remains the same as for the last few Fall releases: Peter Greenway (lead guitar), Keiron Melling (drums), Elena Poulou (keyboards, vocals), Mark E. Smith (vocals) and David Spurr (bass).

Ersatz G.B. is The Fall's first album for Cherry Red Records and it will be released on CD, limited edition vinyl and digital formats, preceded by a double A-side 7" single.

It's weird but Fall albums always blow me away when the lyrics are interpeted. can't imagine this one will be different. Really dig monocard....

Where did guys order the lp? I was gonna just get it from domestic Amazon but apparently they don't carry it. From Action? Cherry Red? Amazon UK?
Roaratorio
11/20/11 5:33 PM
I got mine from Action. Ordered the single and the new John Cale at the same time. Use that "fallnet" discount for 10% everything.
12/09/11 8:18 AM
Cherry Red says the vinyl LP & 7" are now sold out. Action Records still has some to sell but I wouldn't wait too long.

the Classical
4/23/12 11:50 AM
Sounds like it was shipped, but only one per store

UPDATE : a message from MES:

We were approached by Cherry Red to make a one-off vinyl single for Record Store Day 2012. We believed this event was created to promote vinyl and help record shops survive. What Cherry Red didn't tell us that they were only going to send one copy to each shop and that meant that some customers were mislead.

I'm just sorry they were inconvenienced.

the Classical

Also, it is pretty coherent which leads me to believe he didn't write it.

Real MES message would've been

Cunts at Chirry Bed sequestered our songs for collector scum-rash single. Didn't even put enough to stores did they? Some grubby students & look back bores got screwed. That's the way of things as my dad said. Mojo magazine is awful.

new album in the pipeline

'We've been in The Kinks' studio for a fortnight and then we've come back and done three shows in Salford. The improvement in the group is marvellous - they're just tighter and better. We're actually just finishing off the next record. I haven't got a title for it yet but we are thinking about a January release,' says Smith.

I guess my wish for some new blood in the lineup before the next album won't happen, but tevs.
