S.T. Mikael - Mind Of Fire
Whoa. Even better than I could have hoped! I didn't know he had come out of seclusion until I saw this LP for sale in grbgshtr's moving-to-Hawaii pile. I've been a big fan for a very long time, and this is some mammoth Swedish psych overload. Pretty heavy, too. Singing, writing and sound quality as strong or better than ever!

GREAT record. Thanks for the reminder, Cloney, gonna re-acquaint myself with that one. It's been a while.

That SOO VAC show, ear-splitting though it was, was a live highlight of the decade for me.

Totally. In my nighttime tinnitus I'm pretty sure I can still hear Lobdell futzing with his tape delay.

I'm going to listen to this again when it ends.

Devo - Live at the Walker 1978.
I owe major props to aussiescaggs. This might just be the best sounding live recording I've ever heard.
someone should re-post that.
listening to the new kurt vile, getting bit by a cat.
a great recording indeed, but i definitely need to clarify that
props are definitely due to goodbook's dad for helping get this show booked at the walker in the first place.
i am but merely a messenger in helping get this awesome recording to those who need to hear it.
which now that i think about it, is damn near everybody.
that includes you, good sir watton.

Is it weird that I respect Barry Adamson more as a Bad Seed than a Magazine?
Yes.
sir tomb, i stand arms akimbo with lucifer.
though maybe we can might halfway, as i think the bad seeds would be 10x better nowadays with shatner on vocals.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I don't usually go to all the youtube links on these threads, but the "The Light Pours Out Of Me" one, given as an example of McGeoch's (undeniable) guitar awesomeness is puzzling to me. Those unison bends are just unison bends without Dave Formula framing them out and making them sound cooler. That band was greater than the sum of its parts.

Olivier Messiaen - Messiaen par lui-mĂŞme (Messiaen by himself) - A 4-disc set of his complete organ works, played by him. I've been on a mission to get this stuff since it blew my mind as a college kid sitting in the music library. Some of the most fucked up, sublime, ecstatic music ever laid down. "Classical" types will like it, but I'd expect some devotees of kosmiche synth records and Riley-style minimalist stuff would find much to dig as well. It's mono recordings from the 50s too, so uh, "lo-fi."

Walt Dickerson - Tell Us Only The Beautiful Things & To My Queen - "Free" vibraphone dude. cold cave-cremations. i am sick and on my way home of ditching all my obligations for the day i stopped at the record store and decided i needed to impulse purchase a record. i saw the cover, thought it looked awesome and vaguely remembered someone saying it was good on here. i glove it. very cool..the 2nd side is especially awesome.
fennesz and high places while i graded the remainder of the shitty papers i have to return tomorrow.

Exile and Berlin.

o man, i dont know why it took me till last year to finally listen to Maggot Brain. The punkest record of all time?

Its so sweet!!! The huge guitar solo for the first and last tracks are amazing.

Steve Reich - Sextet

yep, classic sound, that e. hazel.

Flaming Lips - Embryonic
OK so I basically stan for the old shit and love Soft Bulletin 2 deth....Yoshimi i loved but has not aged well...at war with the mystics can eat 2 ballz with a side of Anchor tartar....
but this..........damn this is maybe one of the most fucked up albums released on a major label in like forever....really weird, disjointed drum oriented jams that almost remind me of Can...or like Flaming Lips vers. of the 2nd Liars record...or something, it's just weird...then it devolves into these almost nonexistant plaintive songs that are fairly annoying for the most part, then just some random squacks and noises, then back to some weird junkhard krautrock with Wayne Coyne singing random hippie dingdong lyrics......
honestly i can say if i like this or not but i keep listening....definitely did NOT expect this from the Lips in 2009.
Maggot Brain is fooking phenomenal - I love hearing good guitar players play guitar real good
and also, I love listening to 13th Floor Elevators
mags, i totally agree. however it was quite easy for me to declare that i really really liked it.
flaming lips, neon indian, washed out, annie, amon tobin, thomas function, kopernik, delfonics, koushik
I thought At War With The Mystics had some great songs on it, and I'm not much of a fan. Don't dislike them, but never gave much of a damn. It certainly sounded better than that Yoshimi album. Anyway, Pitchfork has their performance on Conan up of a new song. It's pretty awesome.
yoshimi was a bummer. actually, there are some good songs, but the SOUND of that thing is sooooo gross.
maggot brain is sooooo good. so much funk.
yeah i do think i like this lips album. def a nice surprise from a band i felt like -- on war with the mystics -- was really devolving into a schtick.
btw u know i ryde for indie record stores but this week that lips thing is 7.99 at best buy if you wanna take a flyer on it, which is basically why i got it
kinda sounds like their version of Drums Not Dead.
i heard a second of one of the new songs on the current one day. and i agree with mags, this record sounds really weird in a great way.
got in a weird car accident earlieron the highway flying all over while listening to the recent bill orcutt album. 'ok' stuff, but excellent as a soundtrack!
car crash soundtracks are something I think about fairly often, strangely enuff.

I forgot how fucking GREAT this record is. I picked it up when it came out a few years ago, and randomly put it on when I got home from work today. I wasn't expecting it to hold up, but holy shit did it ever.

mountain goats - life of the world to come. - one of the better "new" mt. goats releases. still disappointing if you judge the entire catalog, but an interesting project, naming every song after a bible verse.
Listened to a whole slew of Neil Young Fri and Sat. Harvest, On The Beach, Decade...
why is it so totally wild and zany that the mountain goats songs are named after bible verses? i don'T get it.

chris bell 'i am the cosmos' 2cd (rhino handmade)
spectrals 7" (captured trax)
larry coryell 'spaces' lp (vanguard)

yeah Black Ice has ended up wearing pretty well for me...."War Machine" is a jam
Yeah, I was originally going to post about how much I like the production on this record - I hate terms like "organic" or "stripped down", but the drum and guitar sounds are really good. Was really digging it in the car last night.
still life - I think it's more of his approach to the bible verses that has garnered the attention. I think it's a creative idea - crafting songs and stories around long-established verse. And, as a mt. goats fan, it's interesting to see john grow and change as a songwriter. I think he's always drawn inspiration from the bible and other sacred texts, but this is his project with the widest scope (and a strange bedfellow to his last release, Satanic Messiah)

Sore Eros - Second Chants

White Hills - A Little Bliss Forever
UFO - Live In Japan
savage, is that early UFO, aren't they supposed to be more psychey or is that the more trad euro hard rock version of the band?
The early UFO ("Flying" especially) is way space rock. It's "hard rock" about it, but if you imagine Hawkwind with even fewer IQ points, you're getting there.
I love it.
(Mis-read that, sorry. Yes, it is the early version. Sorry about that. You are obviously well aware.)
I didnt know Hawkwind had that many IQ points that they could spare.

It really is amazing that anyone found a way to drain some more water out of that pool.

Lou Reed, New York. Bought this 20 years ago. Hadn't listened to it in almost that long. First three tunes are great, kinda plummets by the end of "Dirty Blvd."
Saw some great Nihilist Spasm Band film like 10-12 years ago, can't remember what it was, super inspiring though. Thanks for the link--
'new york' has WAYYYYY more than three good songs, brah!
side 2 gets a bit dicey, but overall? solid jawn.
I suppose. The first three are so excruciating in the good way, and then it seems like the rest get excruciating in the bad way.
Been wanting to hear "Halloween Parade" again for a while. This record stings a lot more than it did when I was 16 and hadn't been anywhere.
times new viking - dig yourself
blues control - local flavor
john cale & terry riley - church of anthrax
'halloween parade' is a total soul-crusher. for sure.
make no mistake..there ARE some major clunkers. "good evening mr waldheim"??? holy fuck that song sucks.
the first three songs plus 'last great american whale' kind of make up for the shit, though.
john coltrane - a love supreme
rush - moving pictures
flaming lips - embyronic
raekwon - OBFCL II
xpost
dirty blvd is a JAM JAM JAM
also my first exposure to Lou Reed, MTV for some reason took a bit of shine to New York and played that video quite a bit....shit BLEW MY MIND
i bought 'new york' on cassette, on a whim, at a local video store/music store that was phasing out it's music, so the cassettes were hella cheap. this was probably around the height of Grunge Fever. i immediately fell in love with it, despite it bearing zero resemblance to what i was currently enjoying. i've always felt a weird connection to that record.
for the last several days -
Skip Spence - Oar
and pretty much nothing else
I think that record is haunted by friendly spirits
Ha, pitpat, "soul-crusher" is spot on.
I need to go eat a bunch of fruit and sit under a sunlamp to counteract Lou Reed sickness.
Roberta Flack - Quiet Fire
The first song, "Go Up Moses" is AMAZING. The rest of the album, however, is only very good.
zomby- ep
'new york' was like the first album where lou was thoroughly self conscious about his "poet laureate of rock" mantle. you could almost make the same case for 'the blue mask,' but that album's not quite as wordy. "dirty blvd" and "romeo had juliette" are perhaps the last lou songs that are great songs, as opposed to planly-arranged mildly-engaging chord progressions for him to spout lyrics over. (i'm sure i'm forgetting a couple good songs of the 1990s... "riptide" maybe?)
Oh man I forgotten about "Dirty Blvd" haha...that video was priceless
And also probably my first real exposure to Lou

And also probably my first real exposure to Lou
Wait, I take that back, I totes knew "Walk on the Wild Side"
i knew "walk on the wild side" like any other kid who listened to fm radio, and then my aunt gave me 'rock n roll animal' in 9th grade & i was hooked.
I don't really get into Lou until Magic and Loss and I probably heard the Velvet Underground around then for the first time as well on the The Doors movie soundtrack, natch
in retrospect, the best thing about 'magic and loss' was that it, in conjunction with the final episode of twin peaks, introduced me to the magic of jimmy scott.
haha yeah i think "heroin" was the first VU song i heard too cuzza the doors....
though i seem to remember maybe KQ snuck "rock n' roll" in some particularly adventerous "a to z" weekend set
hahahaha i later purchased 'magic and loss' on cassette at the very same going-out-of-business establishment. truly a very weird album. the tune with jimmy scott is top-notch.
I have a soft spot for Magic & Loss even though (and I think even at the time) I didn't think it was a really great record. "The Sword of Damocles" was my jam and I still think about that tune sometimes.
i think roar and classy should collaborate on an epic post-Blue Mask Lou Reed solo mixtape
it could happen. i can only type about the song "fire music" being the sole saving grace of the turd that is 'the raven' w/o needing to back up my claim.
^ ...for so long
FACT: young pitpat's main introduction to VU was Jane's Addiction covering 'rock and roll' on that fake live album.

did you see him on the 'magic and loss' tour? when he had that mullet? i seem to remember he had a lectern in front of him as well, and the ushers wouldn't let anyone in from the lobby if a song was in progress. it was Art.
i'd seen sun ra a couple days before and that was more fun.

Haha, I didn't go but one of my high school buddies went and reported back on the ART and the LECTERN.
I have never seen Lou and I've at least avoided seeing him since I had sense I knew what it was going to be like.

i think i avoided them for a long time cuz i was somehow under the impression they were a garage-y Black Lips kinda thing, which is miles away from my cup o' tea.
