| If you guys are at all interested in DOING something about these kinds of things, perhaps volunteer with your neighborhood patrol for a few hours a month. If you don't have a neighborhood patrol, start one. I know the cycling shop on the greenway has a volunteer based patrol you can sign up for. I'm doing that this month. |

Police spokesman Paul Schnell said St. Paul residents started emailing and calling about the video this morning, after seeing the six-and-a-half minute tape on the video sharing website. Some of the locations appear to be in St. Paul. The video shows a series of young men repeatedly pushing down bicyclists, children and pedestrians, apparently at random. It isn't clear if anyone is hurt or if the incidents were ever reported to police. Some of the apparent perpetrators are identified by name. "There is great concern. You can't watch the video and not feel a sense of outrage, that what you're seeing in the video is actually occuring, and there's no reason to believe it's not," Schnell said. Minneapolis police spokesman Jesse Garcia says his department is also aware of the tape and that investigators are looking at it. | Although this is major asshole behavior, I have to say if I were a police officer I'd be pretty concerned about what is going on in these kids home lives or at school to make them so angry or confused that they would turn to violence. Teenagers are immature and hormonal and don't know what the proper response or reaction is to a lot of situations. Maybe they are modeling behavior or talk they heard at home maybe something nasty is going on at their school. |

| i think this does have class/race dimensions though. think about it: middle class white kids usually have after-school activities of some sort--their parents are able to afford them, and they need them in order to build up that much valued cultural capital--or are much more likely to have one parent home (i.e. middle class families have more resources and may be able to have one parent--usually the mother--home for when kids come home after school) than families with less resources that require both parents to work. i did research on somali immigrants'/refugees' access to services in minneapolis a couple years ago, and community leaders told me that somali youth gangs are becoming a huge problem because after-school programs either do not exist, or are so underfunded that they can only involve a small percentage of school-age kids. so, it's not that somali immigrant culture/lack of values is producing this kind of violence/shenanigans (as most of you noted), but because somali immigrants are much more likely to be strapped for resources, in poverty, and working more than their white counterparts, they lack the ability to police their kids. also, many somali families are mother-led (disproportionate amounts of somali families experienced the death of the father during the civil war), making it even harder for those mothers to make wages and take care of their kids. |

| plenty of disenfranchised kids behave like civilized humans. conversely, plenty of very well-to-do kids behave like monsters. i really think that kids of all stripes are just predisposed to act like assholes, especially during the teen years. i think their home life probably has less to do with it than outside influences (i.e. kids are pretty dumb and will mimick any 'edgy' behavior they see happening on tv, etc). hopefully, most kids learn from their mistakes, feel some remorse, and wise up as they age. |

| St. Paul police investigate YouTube video of apparent assaults by Tim Nelson, Minnesota Public Radio November 17, 2009 St. Paul, Minn. — St. Paul police say they're investigating a series of apparent random assaults by a group of young men in the Twin Cities, videotaped and posted to YouTube. Police spokesman Paul Schnell said St. Paul residents started emailing and calling about the video this morning, after seeing the six-and-a-half minute tape on the video sharing website. Some of the locations appear to be in St. Paul. The video shows a series of young men repeatedly pushing down bicyclists, children and pedestrians, apparently at random. The video was removed from YouTube shortly after noon on Tuesday. It isn't clear if anyone is hurt or if the incidents were ever reported to police. Some of the apparent perpetrators are identified by name. "There is great concern. You can't watch the video and not feel a sense of outrage, that what you're seeing in the video is actually occuring, and there's no reason to believe it's not," Schnell said. | I kind of wish someone would shove them around for awhile and see how they like it. Out of character for me, but one day I just couldn't take it anymore. I was a senior, sis a junior. &th grader on bus always picking on and pushing the little grade schoolkids around on our bus. Driver too busy. Our yelling to stop did little to nothing. One morning, after it started my sis and I discussed and when the bus pulled up at the school, we got off and waited for the miscreant and then we shoved him around, asking him how he liked it, not thinking about the fact that the principal's window had a clear view. Later that day I ran into the principal and he said "I didn't see a thing, and nice job". It actually worked, too; he stopped picking on them and later turned into a decent grown-up. I think his older brother picked on him at home. |

| Overall I think what these boys were doing is pretty tame (shoving a kid, stealing a dude's hat), but all it takes is for one of those people to fall wrong and suddenly they're murderers. More than anything this is an opportunity for the parents and their community to scare some sense into them. I think they should get probation or something...hopefully they don't actually lock them up where they learn how to REALLY be hard. |

On Oct. 24, 2008, two people were robbed at gunpoint as they walked along St. Paul's Summit Avenue, a criminal complaint said. Abdi was identified as the gunman; the gun turned out to be a "BB-pellet pistol," the complaint said. A 16- and a 17-year-old were also convicted. | Wizzy - I can't agree with this thing being buried. I think this type of behavior typically blossoms into something more extreme. This is evident by the fact that one perp has been busted for armed robbery etc. I think something must be done to both send a message to these guys and others. Just because I had a fleeting thought about equity and the possibility of a certain group of people hating another group doesn't make the thought inherently bad. In fact, I think this topic should be taking in to strong consideration. Although their attacks are not particularly severe in the recording, I wonder what the future implications are for these fellas or other teens who are interested in doing the same? The same is true for any racially motived group of teens/adults. I don't think they should be attacking others for any reason, especially racial reasons. At the end of the day we have teens assaulting innocent people, regardless of race, but if motivated by a racial hatred, then imo it is a more significant issue. And I can find the fucking comments. I want to read them. They sound like some crazy gun wielding rednecks. |

So a fourteen or fifteen year old could have easily grown up speaking two languages, but different waves of refugees came at different times, so these kids could have very different levels of language skills. i'm not really sure what statistics say about increased levels of violence in refugee populations (who witnessed and either participated in or were victims of violence). i can however assume that refugee camp conditions are enough to pose future threats to physical and mental health, as has been the case. as for assuming they are poor, i am not sure what percentage of the east african population (as you can't tell which country or ethnic group these kids are belong to by the video) lives under the poverty line. but generally an immigrant group takes much longer than fifteen years to establish itself economically. |

By trying to apply "colorblindness" or trying to judge their actions through a single lense, the lense YOU see your world through, you perpetuate a single, dominant view of our collective culture. I know this sounds heavy when it's just about some kids pushing people around, but I would really hope that people could try to see things from another perspective. I'm not trying to justify their actions, I'm not saying they should be punished differently than any other kid who is assaulting strangers. I'm just saying that ignoring a potential source of their behavior is turning a blind eye to a group of people who, as you have all seen in the comments on that article, are clearly in a besieged state living here. The fact that they are Somali matters, whether you chose to acknowledge that or not. |

| This all should serve as a reminder (I'm not blaming the victims). It's a city, a person should be walking around in a constant state of awareness of everybody else on the street. Assume everybody is a threat. It's not a fairytale land of loving people, it's a messy imperfect jumble of people, some of whom are like sharks looking for the weak. The weak and vunerable stick out like a sore thumb. I've had lots of instances where somebody suspicious approached me, even being a 275 pound man usually wearing leather who can look really antisocial, and via either leaving the area or giving the approacher a clear warning that it's not going to be worth their time the situation gets diffused. The key is to always keep your eyes open and move like you have a purpose. And stop walking around with Ipods in your ear, especially after dark. You have to keep on top of the situation or the situation might get on top of you. Political correctness and the hard time immigrants have assimilating and all the good intent in the world doesn't mean shit when a stranger is coming up behind you on a dark street with bad intent. That's not racism, it's covering your own ass. |

| yes, normal man, i agree about generalizations, and I understand that you don't want people to make assumptions, but there is an important designation to be made. i think you hit on something when you said generalizations were scary. that's where the designation needs to be made. there is a difference between generalizing and considering that, in fact, a group of people can all be of the same culture, and then taking into consideration the components and experience of that culture or social group. it's important that we confront these things, rather than shy away from them, because making an effort to be considerate of a person or group's background is a step towards being inclusive. if you are afraid of generalizing, you should be equally afraid of trying to create a blanket expectation for everyone's behavior within a given community by assuming they are all "coming from the same place," so to speak. so, making a generalization based on a person's skin color is not the same as taking into account the possibility that there could be a bigger problem than "being a little asshole," due to the fact that an individual or group of individuals comes from a specific cultural background which is much different than that of most people who reside in the Mpls/St. Paul area. Being considerate is not the same as making an assumption, and does not necessitate a blanket judgement. |
