WMDEEEE reviews: Clipd Beaks - To Realize

just picked this up yesterday--- it's a true case of local boys do awesome....

i've always thought their band was pretty interesting and creative, from the early skronky stuff with the factory records esque rhythm section, to the more bass driven damaged sounding Hoarse Lords album...

but To Realize is something really great-- this is a true album-- more than just a collection of good songs--- it's a big, gauzy, yet rhythmic, with an emphasis on the vocals carrying around understated melodies. it's pretty layered and interestingly assembled as well. and the times when it gets more rocked out, the chaos is more controlled than any other record of theirs--not like it has been muted in any way, more just in the sense of knowing how to ride the bull and go with its movments.

sometimes the instruments fade away, and there will just be these mournful chords of overlayed vocals, like they are a cold wind blowing through it. and then the bass and drums will explode back over. the songs are constructed with striking effects.

it's always enjoyable when bands you listen to take the leap from being good to truly great, and this is an example of that happening.

they don't sound like swans. plus, you need to hear White Light from the Mouth of Infinity or Soundtracks for the Blind from swans or something... thankfully, they don't sound terrible / terrifying in the later period.

this really is a great album - I had a Myspace correspondence w/ one of the guys a while back and he was nice enough to send me a download link - didn't even ask for it, but was thrilled nonetheless! Really really really cool stuff. Really !

Just picked this up. Totally great record. I'm so proud of these guys. Finally they've created a record that unifies all the things I love about music. They've always been abstract texture champs but now have married it with upgrades in content (Nick's lyrics/poetry are/is truly compelling. "Mississippi Mud is flowing through my veins"), chops and great song dynamics. It seems they've always been poised for a step this big but have been (both fairly and unfairly) cast as this sort of Liars jr, which has been a huge encumberrance. I'm glad to see them find their own terrain on which to run with "To Realize". As stated above the 2x45 medium is the dopeness.

wow~!
thanks for all the kind words...
Glad to hear some of you are diggin it!

We probably won't be touring the entire US, it's just really hard these days. But! We do wanna try to do a one-off Minneapolis and/or St.Paul show. We would just need some help borrowing some drums n amps from some of you.
Lez do it!

@Magma90210, ask Treehouse if they are gunna get more. Totally best to support a local record store, esp that one.
But if they aren't gunna get anymore, you can get it directly from the Lovepump store. Or if you have paypal, you could buy it directly from us: clpdbks@hotmail.com

Coors!

WMDEEE's description in the first post is very accurate.

oh and by the way clipd beaks:

it's kinda funny that you don't indicate that the album is two 45s not two 33 1/3rd....for about half the first side i was like "daaaamn this is really strange" until i thought that the vocal effect was getting to be a "bit much"...anyway then i put it up to 45 and it wasn't as screwed....

kinda strange either way but still was funny.
2/25/10 11:56 AM
hey clipdbeaks,

if you still come to the board...where/with whom was this recorded and also where was it mastered?

thx

i read that this was recorded by them in their practice space... "salt" is on the vinyl, so i would venture to guess salt mastering did it. but this is all unsubstantiated.

Hey Magma!

Glad you dig the record, and that's pretty hilarious!
I did that same thing with Victorialand by the Cocteau Twins. It sounded fucked up to me at both speeds though...didn't figure that one out for awhile.
Anyway
Yeah, we recorded it in our practice space ourselves.
And then we had it mastered at Bonati Mastering by Josh Bonati (he's in that band Aa)
And he is AMAZING!
Highly recommend him.
Salt is the name of the place that cut the vinyl, I believe, somewhere in Euro land.
2/25/10 11:46 PM
Ok, I am misinformed...ha
Bonati mastered the digital
Salt mastered the vinyl

we used Bonati for our vinyl mastering, and he's great.
