My wife and I just signed back up for Netflix after about 18 months without it. We have lots of free evenings while our baby is asleep to watch movies.

Anybody have any suggestions of GREAT movies that we can watch?

Rod Stewart was apparently very upset with his girlfriend doing nude scenes in this film.
My friends Tim and Ali refer to that scene as "the slappy butt dance."
The part where she turns and looks at the camera while singing is the most cringeworthy moment of the film. "Willow's Song" is an amazing piece of music, though.

You've seen other Benigni filims, right? His philosophy is pretty consistent in every film he's done: enjoy life, all the time, even when it is horrible.

I don't think he was setting out to illustrate some great point about the holocaust, but rather the holocaust served as a perfect setting to illustrate his philosophy.

2/08/10 5:12 PM
Yeah, I mean I guess I think any "life philosophy" that says you can enjoy life when you're being starved to death in a concentration camp is ridiculous if not outright offensive. I mean, read "If This is a Man" by Primo Levi and tell me Benigni makes a lick of sense.
Christ O Fire
2/08/10 5:32 PM
I can see why someone might be offended. But it's not like he's some kind of nazi sympathizer. Shit, his dad was a holocaust survivor. I personally don't see it as offensive because he's not shoving his philosophy at you, saying those in concentration camps should have acted this way, but rather, here's a story of someone who acted this way.

2/09/10 1:19 PM
SK - It's not really so much about humor as it is about keeping his son blind and naive to what's really going on by making him think that it's a game. It would be pretty dumb of you to say that no one did something like that, it's totally believable. Whether or not the father was really on the brink of losing it on the inside is another story.

I'm not a HUGE fan of the movie, but I don't get your hate. Maybe you forget HOGAN's HEROS? Like that shit hasn't been done before or people haven't had problems with humor in sensitive subjects.

Life is Beautiful tells the story a man who is willing to die to protect his son from understanding why people would want to kill them just for being Jews. That's pretty much it. Nothing to really argue about, it's a personal story and if you like it, you're in good company, and if you don't like it, I'm sure you're in good company too. Some of my ancestors were in concentration camps, but I'm only mentioning that because I don't want anybody to watch this film with a preconceived notion that it's wrong for them to laugh if they think something is funny.
