Our friend and co-conspirator for many excellent records of Rifle Sport, Cows and others passed on yesterday.

Pancreatic cancer. Not sure of his age, but way too young. A hilarious and wonderful man and engineer. Very sad.

Iain and Monty in the Entry basement, we hauled a 24-track machine and console down there for our Live In The Entry album.

Oh wow, terrible news.

Random amusing Iain memory: At the AmRep studio, recording Cows' Sexy Pee Story, and Kevin was ragging him for something or other. Iain looks up momentarily from the board, and in his great snide Brit accent, says "This from a man who is currerntly wearing a baby's bib around his neck", before returning to what he was doing.

No! Really? That's a shame.

He relocated and had his studio in France, right? Was he still in France?

He worked on one or two of the early Big Black records, if I'm remembering correctly.

Yeah.. check out his incredibly awesome studio.. I didn't get to record there but did visit it.

A 200+ year-old farm in France.. at least he was able to live out his last years in Engineer Heaven.

Sad to hear he's passed away. He definitely left behind some great records. Stalwart of the underground.

Iain and I were roommates in Chicago before I moved to Mpls in 1991. He turned me on to Marmite and was a huge Cubs fan. Two things which make him aces in my book. He recorded several of my bands and was always a blast to work with.

Burgess from (I think) a Breaking Circus recording session;

"Albini, you are a TERRIBLE tea boy! When I was a tea boy (Limey slang for studio gofer) I did what I was told immediately! Now get on that button and stay on that button until I say otherwise."

After a grueling session with a very young metal band who were trying to play very complex thrash metal. The band who claimed that Metallica stole their kick drum sound;

"That kid needs to make up some parts he's able to PLAY!. Thirty takes and he still didn't nail it."

Iain was a joy to be around and seemed to cloak his affection for people in a spiky balloon of good natured ribbing and jabs. Something which made Burgess recording sessions a complete riot.

If there's a bright side, it's that he did exactly what he loved doing, exactly where he wanted to do it for the last years of his life.

very few people get to fully realize their dreams; looking at the black box studio website, it certainly looks as if iain was able to. gorgeous, pastoral rural france, converted 200-year old stone house, studio w/ guest quarters...man, sounds like engineer paradise to me!
