7/20/11 9:30 AM
You can now listen to our feature show on little-known San Antonio-based songwriter, Russell Hoke, over on the FFF blog. Hoke recorded a bunch of songs during the 80's & 90's and, in recent years, has self-released these in small run vinyl editions that he assembles himself. His work brings to mind various left-of-center songsmiths such as Michael Hurley, Holy Modal Rounders, Lee Hazlewood, Syd Barrett, Daniel Johnston, and I'd even go out on a limb and say Neutral Milk Hotel. It's outsider music, but not in an overly oddball way.
7/25/11 7:44 AM
An update on the recent Russell Hoke feature: you can also get in touch and order Russell's records by contacting him directly at russnbus@yahoo.com
8/01/11 8:32 AM

You'll notice that the Free Form Freakout site has been given a much-needed makeover thanks to the multi-talented Frank Ouellette of Hobo Cult Records, Hobo Cubes, Moduli TV, and countless other mind-expanding projects. To mark the occasion, we're going to be printing up a limited number of t-shirts with the new FFF design on it. Please get in touch with us if this is something you may fancy, just so we have a rough estimate of how many to do. All the profits from the sales of these t-shirts will be given to Frank for lending his time and talent to this project, and to help support his own future projects.
8/29/11 12:39 PM
Webcast #25: We recently had a chance to speak with Michael Jantz who runs the Avant Archive label out in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over the past year, Jantz has honed a very distinctive and instantly recognizable visual aesthetic for the label, while building up a catalog with an impressive range of sounds. In addition to his work with Avant Archive, Jantz has also been an active player within underground tape trader circles for several years now, having put out numerous releases of his own as Black Eagle Child on such reputable labels as Stunned, Digitalis, Housecraft, and many others. We aired our recent phone conversation with Michael on this week's show, where we discussed his work with both Avant Archive and as Black Eagle Child, and we played several tracks from each respective discography.
9/11/11 1:53 PM
Audio for this past Thursday's show, FFFreakout #280, is now available to download. In the coming week or so, we will also have the Hobo Cult/Hobo Cubes-designed Free Form Freakout t-shirts available to purchase and our special tribute to Stunned Records will be hitting the cyber airwaves.

Webcast #26: A Tribute to Stunned Records
As Stunned Records has now officially come to a close, I felt compelled to do something a bit special for this week’s show. So, in addition to playing a bunch of tracks from the Stunned catalog, including several selections from the final batch of tapes, I called on some Stunned alumni to provide some comments on what the label meant to them and their work, which you’ll hear spread throughout the show.

Webcast #28: Eli Keszler / REL Records feature

We recently had a chance to speak with Eli Keszler about his various musical and artistic pursuits, including the work he is doing with his REL imprint. We aired this interview on this week’s show and played several tracks from Keszler’s solo and collaborative projects, along with something from his partner and collaborator, Ashley Paul.

*Eli Keszler is a composer, artist and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City. In performance, he often plays drums, bowed crotales and guitar in conjunction with his installations. In his ensemble compositions, he uses extended strings, motors, crotales, horns and mechanical devices to create his sound, balancing intense harmonic formations with acoustic sustain, fast jarring rhythm, mechanical propulsion, dense textures and detailed visual presentations. Eli has toured extensively throughout Europe and the US, performing solo and in collaboration with artists such as Phill Niblock, Aki Onda, Joe McPhee, Loren Connors, Jandek, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Coleman, Joe Morris, Steve Beresford, C Spencer Yeh, Greg Kelley (Nmperign), T Model Ford, Ran Blake, Ashley Paul and Steve Pyne. He has recorded solo releases for labels such as his own REL Records, ESP-DISK' and Type (Red Horse). His installations have appeared at the Boston Center for the Arts and Nuit Blanche NYC and the Shreveport MSPC New Music Festival. He has most recently won the Mata composers competition for the 2012 season. Eli Keszler is a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Anthony Coleman and Ran Blake. We recently had a chance to speak with Jason Anderson, who runs both the labels, and who creates some impressive music of his own in the synth duo Brother Raven and in such solo projects as Spare Death Icon, Harpoon Pole Vault, and 2 Hands On Knobs. Podcast #34: Panabrite / Library Music Feature with Norm Chambers

For this week's podcast show we got a chance to speak with Seattle-based musician Norm Chambers, whom records under the name Panabrite, a project we’ve grown quite fond of here on the show over the past year or so. Chambers has had a string of incredible limited run releases on such labels as Tranquility Tapes, Sturmundrugs, Hooker Vision, and Gift Tapes. And he’s now set to release his first LP entitled Soft Terminal on Digitalis in the coming weeks.

Chambers' rhythmically-charged, yet melodically complex work as Panabrite draws from various corners of electronic music’s rich history, tracing back to the early composers of library music, that being the “mood music” or “background music” used in television, film, and commercials, but was never widely available to the general public. Chambers, in fact, has a wealth of knowledge in the area of library music, offering up bits of information and rare recordings through his Lunar Atrium blog. In our conversation with Norm, we discuss his interest in library music and his work as Panabrite. He was also kind enough to put together some of his favorite library music tracks for us to play on this week’s show. We also play a few tracks from some of the recent Panabrite releases, including something off of that new Digitalis LP.

Tracklist:
Panabrite “Cirrus” Illumination CS (Sicsic Tapes)
(Interview segment)
Serge Bulot “Echoes” Les légendes de Brocéliande (Sonimage) France, 1981
Piero Umiliani (as Zalla) “Attivita” Problemi D’Oggi (Liuto) Italy, 1974
Milpatte (aka Bernard Fevre) “Cirka” April Orchestra Vol. 47 (CBS Disques) France, 1982

This album, entitled Vanity Fair, is coming out in the first official batch of releases this week on McCann's new Recital imprint.

FFFreakout: Podcast #39 with Marc Masters, experimental music journalist for Pitchfork and The Wire magazine

On this week's podcast show, we chatted with music journalist, Marc Masters. Masters is a regular reviewer for Pitchfork and The Wire magazine, and he co-writes The Outdoor for Pitchfork, which is their monthly column devoted to experimental and fringe music. In addition to contributing to other print and online publications, Masters also had his first book, No Wave, published back in 2007, offering a detailed history of that influential late seventies New York City scene. Along side his music writing, Masters also plays music of his own in the improvised rock group, The Plums. Marc picked out all the tracks heard on this week's show (with the exception of "Smelly Tongues") and our conversation covers his music writing and musical interests, music criticism in general, and his work with The Plums.

FFFreakout podcast update:
We are planning to expand the regular FFFreakout podcast shows to 2 hours in length in order to cover more of the amazing underground and experimental music that we are receiving on a monthly basis. Due to our limited technical know-how, we'd like to continue to utilize Soundcloud as a way to deliver our show on this blog and elsewhere. This increase in length, of course, means that we have to upgrade our Soundcloud plan, which by my Euro-to-Dollar converter count isn't all that cheap. If you're interested in what we are doing with the FFFreakout podcast show and would be willing to donate even some spare change to help us with this upgrade we would be forever grateful. Thanks to everyone who has listened and shared their sounds with us over the past few years.

Free Form Freakout will be live today at 2 p.m. raising money for KMSU's Spring Pledge Drive. Due to recent funding shortages, the stakes have been raised this time around. While KMSU receives some dollars from the state/university, it still relies on listener support to cover roughly 40-50% of its operating costs.

Today, we'll have three copies of the latest Russell Hoke LP to give away to the first three people to pledge $30 or more during our show. I may bring up a few other freebies to give away as well. Please consider giving us a call at 507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810. You can also pledge on-line at kmsu.org. We would love to hear from you!!
4/26/12 9:59 AM
****Update for today's Pledge Drive show:
Our generous board member fruit & flowers of the fine Soft Abuse Records has donated a handful of CD copies of the brand spankin' new Pumice album "Puny" to give away to anyone who donates $25 or more during the show today. Pumice has been a fixture on the show for years, so I'm thrilled to have this as a premium. We'll be playing something off of the album, but in the meantime scope this.

We still have three copies of the latest Pumice CD to give away to those who pledge $25 or more during the show, along with other terrific premiums at various amounts. FFFreakout: Podcast #41 - Loud & Sad in-studio session

On this week's podcast show, we were joined in the studio by Nathan McLaughlin and Joe Houpert, long-time friends and collaborators who record together under the name Loud & Sad. While McLaughlin currently resides in central Minnesota and Houpert still lives out East in Philadelphia, the two were meeting up to play a few shows together here in the Midwest over the next week and were kind enough to drop by the studio to perform a rare live set together as Loud & Sad. Later in the show, we got a chance to chat a bit with Nathan and Joe to ask them a few things about their work together and as solo artists. They also provided us with several tracks from some new and forthcoming releases of theirs to play throughout the show.

KMSU kicked off its Fall Pledge Drive today and we are hoping to hear from some FFF listeners out there. Our station relies heavily on listener support to help pay for the majority of its regular operating costs, which seem to be increasing at an alarming rate. If you value programming that isn't beholden to anything else other than the whims of diehard music fans, then we need to hear from you. You can make a pledge in any amount by calling 389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810. You can also donate online at www.kmsu.org.

FFF will be offering some special pledge premiums made available by the good folks at De Stijl Records on Thursday's show (tomorrow). Tune in. Yeh!!!

@teddyruxpin

Just click on the FFF podcasts link along the right-hand side and that should get you to all of them in order.

OR click here

Also, the more recent podcasts, named FFFoxy, are available on the Foxy Digitalis website. There are some big changes coming with this website and there has been some talk of making these podcasts available through itunes or one of those more typical digital outlets, which I don't know much about. I'll put more information on here as I am made aware.

April 24th marks the start of KMSU's annual Spring Pledge Drive. This time around, a goal of $35,000 has been set: the largest in the station's history! After 50 years in existence as a community radio station, I assure you, we're not all of the sudden becoming greedy bastards. Like everything else around us, it's simply becoming more expensive to run a station like this, which already operates on the thinnest of shoestring budgets.

With the stakes being raised this time around, we here at Free Form Freakout wanted to do something a bit more grand to try and entice listeners to call in during our show and pledge their financial support to the station that we love and value so much within our community. Without so much as a "Look, here's the deal", the generous folks, and longtime supporters, at the Soft Abuse label went and offered up perhaps the most insane premium item that I believe we've ever done on our show. For the first four people that call in and pledge $50 or more during our regularly scheduled 2 p.m. show on Thursday, April 25th, you will become the proud owner of the Soft Abuse Records Starter Pack, a handpicked selection of eleven key titles from the Soft Abuse catalog that spans various genres and formats. The Soft Abuse Records Starter Pack includes:

Wooden Wand - Harem of the Sundrum & the Witness Figg CD
Blackout Beach - Skin of Evil CD
Ulaan Khol - III CD
Skygreen Leopards - One Thousand Bird Ceremony CD
Pumice - Quo CD
Langtry - As Upon the Road Thereto CD
Pigeons - Liasons LP
The Deadnotes - Orange Trumpet LP
Donovan Quinn & the 13th Month - Your Wicked Man LP
Julian Lynch - Music For How Mata Hari Lost . . . 7"
Pumice - Pebbles CS

We also have stacks of CDs available from the now dormant, though equally amazing, Last Visible Dog label for those that pledge in the $10-50 range. In addition to these FFF exclusives, we'll be plugging the various KMSU premiums that include t-shirts, coffee mugs, CDs, and much more.

If you value the type of show that we do and the type of programming that KMSU offers, then we'd love to hear from you this week. Not only will your dollars go to a worthy cause, but you can score a stack of great music in the process. You can make your pledge by calling us this Thursday at 507-389-5678 or 1-800-456-7810. You can also pledge any time online over at the KMSU website. We look forward to hearing from you!!
