Is it weird or bad to say that Amy Poehler is my least favorite character despite being one of my favorite actors? UCB FTW!
PMkark
11/16/10 1:13 AM
I think Mark kinda sucks. He's almost the same as Jim from the Office (smug etc.), which turned me off of the entire show. Again, because the first season felt like office lite (poehler=carrel)

But I think Knope gets more likable and less blundering fool as the show has continued.

I've never heard of this show. but it sounds like it's time to check it out.

11/16/10 1:41 AM
Mark isn't supposed to be a likable character. He is basically a tool for the Andy/April/Ann tension, I think. He isn't here nor there, in fact, he's kind of a boring dork.

I'm really glad they made Leslie Knope into a very smart overachiever instead of an ignorant rube like Michael Scott. She is a total dork, but is either psyched about it or terrified of it. She's a decent character, but Tom, Andy, April, and Ron definitely have the best lines. The supporting characters like Donna and Jerry are great, too.

I actually don't really like Ann. I think Rashida Jones always plays the same nice, well-rounded, hot girl. It's possible that I don't like her because I hated the Karen Philipelli character on The Office.

...Or possibly because Ann doesn't want Andy. Blasphemy!
Rae
11/16/10 1:49 AM
Paul Schneider is among my favorite working actors (see: All the Real Girls, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Away We Go) but as Mark he's totally wasted in this show, esp. in the second season. Too bad, but luckily everyone else is fucking amazing.

Jean-Ralphio!
cop

Omg Jean-Ralphio. Such a horrible douche wad.
text machine
11/16/10 9:25 AM
Leslie Knope has the same wide-eyed enthusiasm that Tracy Flick from "Election" had, but she's more likeable. I think the supporting characters are stronger because they have her to play off of. In my opinion, the lead character is rarely the funniest/most interesting character in the best shows. Seinfeld certainly wasn't.

I thought this show sucked in season 1, but now that I'm watching them again on Netflix, I may have changed my view. It's Office-y, but not as much as I originally thought. It's fun to see how quickly Aziz Ansari adapted the Tom Haverford character after the first couple of episodes.

This is easily the best show in NBC's lineup right now. I couldn't stand the first season for some reason, but after finally getting into it during the second season, I re-watched everything on Netflix and it's been funny from the start. I obviously had the wrong opinion before.

A whole slew of friends went banana's over the RON SWANSON PYRAMID OF GREATNESS and it finally got me to check the show out. Wow, this show is top shelf funny! I had only seen like a random 10 minutes, and dashed it off as a cheap U.S. Office rip-off. I mean IT IS a U.S. Office rip off but it has a cast of great characters and is written really well. If it would lose the Fake Docoumentary camera work it would really stand on its own.

I don't know where they are going with this....the third season started off soooooooo good. Like I'd say 3 of the episodes from Season 3 are the 3 best episodes in this show's history, but now it's getting pretty boring.

abomb, the more I watch the show, the more I think you're right.

The teeth bit had me on the floor and made me cringe. I love it.

Also, this show is going towards the rom-com route but I think they, like the office, have enough funny moments and don't make it too overly serious that it works. That being said, I'm glad the office is switching the cast up to create a bit more intrigue. I don't think this season was all that great and it needed some mixing up.

Amy Poehler and Adam Scott's relationship development on the show has been nice. The moment where she asks him to say was really sweet but they offset it with having that goth kid kinda watching them from a corner creepily.

Also, if this show needs more of something it would be a lot more of Mouse Rat!
kobbybahn
4/15/11 10:12 AM
See I had to stop watching the office because it got too rom-comy for me. The little bits of the end that my dvr picks up when recording Parks and Rec just confirm that I made the right choice, although last night's with a bit of Will Ferrel did look sort of funny.

That goth kid was great.
tom
4/15/11 10:20 AM
Will Farrell was good and the show was good in moments. I think it is one of those shows that I will stick with because I want to see it through but I don't totally love anymore. The rom side of it can be sweet at times but other times it makes me want to jump off the wagon. I feel like P & R could get there if they don't add or subtract a few characters.

4/15/11 10:27 AM
Good comedies don't need a romantic interest angle to hold up. Not to say that a show can't be good when there are couples involved, but when that's the main angle it really takes away a lot of the attention from the good stuff. I understand that they are on NBC so they have to go this way, but I'm starting to get a little worried.

Best comedies on TV right now:
Archer
Delocated
Always Sunny
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The League
Louie

None of these shows focus too much on a relationship or trying to pair up characters that aren't already paired up when the show starts.

The shaving bit was so painful to watch. I couldn't stop cringing as she was shaving sideways across his face.

P&R has been better than 30 Rock in moments for the last two years and waaay better than the Office. I go back and forth with P&R winning and stoked they are picked up for another season. The show definitely needs to try to have more Haverford moments.

kobby,
I would watch that show too but one thing about all of the comedies you listed (and I like) are that they are on cable. They have a bit more leverage to say and do things that you can't do on network TV. I guess I am comparing the Thursday NBC shows to anything else on network TV. I haven't watched Bob's Burgers and Simpsons has been really hit or miss for almost 10 years but outside of that, network TV comedy is garbage.
kobbybahn
4/15/11 10:44 AM
True, I mean I feel like NBC requires them to have these romantic interest angles, maybe if they don't say it expressly, it's still probably obvious to the creators/writers/producers that they need to include this stuff to keep the show running.

I highly recommend Bob's Burgers. It has an all star cast and for a network show they seem to get away with a lot. It has some potential to be a lot better than it is, and I have faith. They got picked up for a 2nd season recently.

I shudder to fucking think what The Office would be without its relationship plots.

Though its crassness far exceeds King of the Hill, I am enjoying Bob's Burgers for the humorous, recognizable, and essentially gentle familial interplay.

Bob's burgers took me about 5 episodes to finally like. All the kids were SO fucking unlikeable at first that even Kristen Schaal's magic couldn't save them. But now I feel like they're finally showing how they gel as a family unit, and it's making it work as a series for me - as well as making the jokes way funnier because I actually don't hate all the characters except for bob.

I've only seen one ep of Bob's Burgers, but I liked it. Will def watch it again.
Still haven't watched Louie. I hated the show he had on HBO, so I haven't given it a shot yet.

Top 10:
1.)Community
2.)Parks and Rec
3.)It's Always Sunny...
4.)Eastbound and Down
5.)Bored to Death
6.)Modern Family
7.)Curb Your Enthusiasm
8.)Children's Hospital
9.)Delocated
10.)Archer

I heard on a comedy podcast with Adam Scott that the season arch got kind of screwy because everyone thought the season finale would be the harvest festival, but when that climaxed at like the 5th episode they had to come up with apparently this wedding bull shit that just sort of happened.

No, I'm definitely right. I've done extensive focus grouping on it. I don't mean the whole "will they won't they" at the end of season 2, I'm just talking about how they "won't they" because of Ann kissing Andy. Then they get some more mileage out of the "will they won't they" to start season 3.

It's ALWAYS "will they", in the end.

tom
5/12/11 10:27 PM
agreed on the Office. They needed a major plot vehicle to get out of the rut they had started to really sink in to. Kathy Bates didn't add much but I think a whole new boss could be good. I know it won't happen but I wish it was Will Arnett.

The last P&R where Leslie sets up Ron the special night for his b-day and he remembers why he hired her got me a little misty. Both the Office and P&R have a nice belend of wistfulness and hilarity. I also love the rapport between Andy and April especially in the snakehole episode with the character thing. Also, snakejuice=amazing plot vehicle!

They might as well be talking about April.

The A.V. Club: In various interviews by you, Glenn, and Charlie, you’ve said that you decided to gain the weight because you noticed that people in other sitcoms were getting thinner and better-looking. What examples have you seen of that?

Rob McElhenney: I think you turn on any television show, specifically in the last like five or six years—even the Friends were getting better-looking as the years were going by. The Big Bang Theory was another one. I was watching that show and I was noticing that the nerds were getting better-looking; their clothes were getting nicer. They looked more handsome. I just couldn’t understand that decision. I understand it as an actor, which is, you want to be able to jump off that show and be able to go work on other things. But to me, if you’re dedicated to what you’re doing in the moment, right now, it just doesn’t make any sense that you would be more attractive as the years go by. If anything, when you’re in your late 20s, early 30s, and then mid-30s, you’re getting less attractive

AVC: It always seems like the women get thinner as the years go on, too.

RM: Of course! And then the plastic surgery kicks in, and then you have a new stylist so your clothes look better, and then you have the most expensive guy in Beverly Hills doing your hair so your highlights look nicer. Look, ultimately, I understand it from a business perspective. There are certain elements of the entertainment industry, specifically movies and television, [where] it’s about glamour. Our show has always been the opposite of that. So I think it works for some shows. It just doesn’t work for us, as far as I was concerned.

I did watch a few episodes when it first aired, and I liked it just fine, but not enough to get me to watch more than a few episodes. It sounds like it had a pretty good run for a while but then got bad.

If the Office is still on the air, any show not good enough to keep having new episodes must not be that good.

I think Parks is still great but I agree that Andy is becoming too dumb.... kind of reminds me of what they turned Homer Simpson into around the time i stopped watching that show.
