Financial Martial Law

in a bid to make WI's Gov Walker look like a pussy, MI's Gov Rick Snyder (R - duh) is looking to completely decimate the democratic process:

"According to the law, which has already been approved in the House, the governor will be able to declare "financial emergency" in towns or school districts and appoint someone to fire local elected officials, break contracts, seize and sell assets, and eliminate services.

Under the law whole cities or school districts could be eliminated without any public participation or oversight, and amendments designed to provide minimal safeguards and public involvement were voted down."

Didn't take long for the new law to be put to use.

Robert Bobb is the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools (which, as you might guess, are in pretty bad shape). He was appointed by Jennifer Granholm (D), and has been a controversial figure so far. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here, because now he has that extra degree of power.

Happy Easter from State Sen. Bruce Caswell, you freeloading foster children.

Foster children in Michigan would use their state-funded clothing allowance only in thrift stores under a plan suggested by State Senator Bruce Caswell.

Caswell says he wants to make sure that state money set aside to buy clothes for foster children and kids of the working poor is actually used for that purpose.

He says they should get "gift cards" to be used only at Salvation Army, Goodwill or other thrift stores.

"I never had anything new," Caswell says. "I got all the hand-me-downs. And my dad, he did a lot of shopping at the Salvation Army, and his comment was -- and quite frankly it's true -- once you're out of the store and you walk down the street, nobody knows where you bought your clothes."

Yeah no hyperbole at all there.

There's an original link embedded therein to the original article which doesn't have the same over-reactive histrionics which is a more level-headed read.

I would agree that it's definitely a play by the factory pork industry to snuff out competition from smaller family/organic pig farmers, though.

I checked that link out last night too. It's just like the law that was going to pass while back where they said any animal you own is going to need to be chipped and registered. Never happened. This pig one is sort of crazy but I doubt Michigan has the funds to send out pig death squads to raid a bunch of little farms. But it's a dumb law, for sure.

It's been quite a week at the ol' Michigan State House. As you probably know, two right-to-work bills passed the GOP-contolled legislature.
But wait!
Let's tackle abortion rights while the iron is still hot

Two sweeping bills aimed at limiting abortion options moved closer to Gov. Rick Snyder's desk Wednesday, adding to two others already awaiting his signature.

From a chaotic Lansing, where protests over right-to-work this week had overshadowed abortion concerns, Ed Rivet, spokesman for Michigan Right to Life, was thrilled.

"Those three issues were our top issues: conscience, insurance, and regulation and reform," he said, referring to the issues addressed in the bills. "That we're doing them all simultaneously is pretty remarkable.

"This is a bit of rewards for 25 years of work."

One bill passed the Senate 27-10 and calls for more stringent licensing of abortion clinics; the other passed out of the House Insurance Committee into the full House and would allow health care providers to refuse service based on moral objections, religious reasons or matters of conscience.

Beginning to think cancelling my Xmas trip (for unrelated reasons) was the right thing to do.

Here is what Michigan Senate Bill 78 is proposing. This is a direct quote from the official bill analysis:

Senate Bill 78 (as introduced 1-24-13)
Sponsor: Senator Tom Casperson
Committee: Natural Resources, Environment and Great Lakes
Date Completed: 2-1-13

CONTENT

The bill would amend several parts of the Natural Resources and Environmental
Protection Act to do the following:

-- Prohibit the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Natural Resources Commission from promulgating or enforcing a rule or an order that designates or classifies an area of land specifically for the purpose of achieving or maintaining biological diversity.

-- Delete the conservation of biological diversity from the DNR's duties regarding forest management, and require the Department to balance its management activities with economic values.

-- Eliminate a requirement that the DNR manage forests in a manner that
promotes restoration.

-- Provide that a State department or agency would not have to designate or
classify an area of land specifically for the purpose of achieving or maintaining
biological diversity.

-- Revise the definition of "conservation" with regard to biological diversity.

-- Delete a legislative finding that most losses of biological diversity are the result of human activity.

Black Nurses Banned from Caring for Child in Michigan Hospital
February 15, 2013

<i>In Michigan, a neonatal nurse reports that she was removed from her job because a Swastika-tattooed father who didn’t want his daughter treated by any African Americans. The nurse, Tonya Battle, had been working at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, since 1988. Yet when a newborn girl came into the neonatal intensive care unit recently, Battle was abruptly removed from the case because “the father told the [nurse in charge] that he did not want and African Americans taking care of his baby."
Battle is now suing the hospital for discrimination.

"She [BATTLE] was shocked, offended and in disbelief that she was so egregiously discriminated against based on her race and re-assigned," the court documents read.
The evidence in this case appears overwhelming. Not only was Battle removed from the case, but later she found a note in the baby’s file that read, "No African American nurse to take care of baby."

Neither Battle nor any other nurses of color were allowed to care for the baby for her month-long stay in the hospital.<i>

This is really bizarre. I can't believe any hospital wouldn't just tell the guy, "Tough shit, pal, how many nurses do you think we have on staff here?"

Well, I know the hospital can't turn anyone away so that's a tough situation to be in. The hospital could have told the dude that he's shit out of luck and he gets whoever is on duty, but as hospitals are also trained to keep safety at a top priority, they probably thought the dude would throw a fit and risk the safety of others. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have just told the guy to fuck off, but in the moment that's a real lose-lose situation. I could see them appeasing that guy for the first few hours until they figured out a way to handle him, but for it to go on for a month is fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of that last part.
Maybe they had a real fear that he was going to take is bbay (which I assume was in some sort of trouble, if it was there a whole month after birth) and leave? Can parent do that, in that situation?
So many questions.

I have been reassigned away from patients due to being a male but that is super common. I have also had patients fire me through the charge nurse to the point where I couldn't even go into their rooms cause they are mad at me or paranoid or something.

I have also had old white male and female patients ask for "non-african nurses" because they claim to not be able to understand them. I usually don't even respond when someone says that just say hmm. This racist dad and his gey little kid can screw off tho.

Or rather, what pm said.
