Polian is a BITCH and so's his bitch kid. So glad we didn't take that bum.

Polian is probably the single most successful NFL executive over the past 30 years.
*johnny's offspring
1/03/12 11:55 AM
the vikes haven't found depth in the later rounds though. it seems like that's where more stable, consistent teams set themselves apart. spielman doesn't get all the blame since there were 3 people technically selecting personnel, and part of that could be chalked up to bad scouting as well.
Beard & Butter
1/03/12 11:55 AM
Dude drafted Manning and look what happened when he didn't have him playing? Wasn't prepared at all
Christ O Fire
1/03/12 11:56 AM
seriously, what the fuck are you talking about? did he murder some babies or pull some pol pot shit that i somehow missed?
1/03/12 11:58 AM
pffft. give me a fucking break. polian has consistently fielded very good teams with in tiny markets with small payrolls for three decades. five super bowl appearances. took an expansion franchise to the NFC championship game in two years. if you think all he did was draft manning you know absolutely nothing about what the best executive in football has done for the thirty years.
1/03/12 11:58 AM
wait, wait. SIX super bowl appearances.
1/03/12 12:00 PM
although i'm glad that you agree manning is the most transcendent player in the history of the nfl.
1/03/12 12:01 PM
might even say manning is the bill polian of players.
1/03/12 12:05 PM
suddenly it's all quiet on the talking-out-of-our-asses front.
Beard & Butter
1/03/12 12:05 PM
I'm not talking about his career but just with his tenure with the Colts. Anyone drafting manning would have looked brilliant for the past 14 years. Colts need a change and it sounds like irsay wants a fresh start when luck comes in
mumblecrust
1/03/12 12:09 PM
Kinda bummed that quarterback is still a huge question mark for us. Seems like that's always the case. Look at the Packers; even their backup is awesome
Christ O Fire
1/03/12 12:09 PM
dwight freeney, robert mathis, bob sanders, reggie wayne, edgerrin james (both the drafting and ditching of him were brilliant), jeff saturday, Tony Dungy... all garbage without Manning.
Beard & Butter
1/03/12 12:13 PM
Where were those star players this year? I know James and Sanders are gone but those other guys were just not to be found. I am not going to argue with you about Polian as we seem to agree Manning has had the greatest impact for the Colts
Christ O Fire
1/03/12 12:18 PM
yes, after setting all kinds of nfl records for the most consistent success and stability in a franchise, everything went wrong this year. bill polian made things go right for 15 years in indy. after decades of pure success and being utterly peerless as an executive, claiming he's a bum because of one really bad year (the only remotely bad year on his record) is utterly ridiculously.
Beard & Butter
1/03/12 12:21 PM
I didn't say he was a bum. That was coach...I just don't scream for him for being a MN G.M.

Polian thought he was an owner, and he learned yesterday that he isn't. So did his good-for-nothing progeny.

He has brought unprecedented success to the Colts in his tenure, but his style and demeanor makes Belichick look like Gruden. Moreover, the last three seasons it HAS been Manning carrying them, and every analyst/pundit/rube has pointed out how Indy has 3 superstars and the rest. No one can argue he has had some monumental success over the course of his career, I just think he's a piece of shit.
Christ O Fire
1/03/12 12:58 PM
i'd have been happier if the colts traded manning for a ham sandwich than i am with cutting polian loose. i have no idea about the abilities of his son, but i can't think of anyone i'd rather have in charge of personnel for a team in such a terrible position. goddamn this sucks. worst football decision ever.

1/03/12 1:46 PM
Word from ProFootballTalk.com is that Polian wanted Manning out this year and Irsay was like "no." I'm not debating whether it was a good move, just saying what I heard. I find it unbelievable that Polian is out and that bowl of oatmeal Caldwell still has a job.

On the Polian subject, I think if the quarterback is such an essential cog in the franchise's success then leaving the backup cupboard as bare as they did is a fireable offense. As good as Manning is, their options after him were thoroughly incompetent. They let Peyton run the franchise, essentially, and it bit them in the ass. Every good quarterback is a system quarterback, and if you're not bothering to either teach your backups the system or to find dudes who can handle it you're leaving yourself open to disaster.

Either Peyton was too big of an egomaniac to accept a viable backup or Polian was too stupid to get one. Both of those scenarios are unacceptable.

Beard, My brother and I sat two rows behind those girls. I remember seeing it in the paper the next day and being all "those were the chicks balling like a buncha sad sacks and making us feel all awkward cuz we were blazed to the fucking nines."

OK, so a couple of things:

1) We need to realize, as a fan base, that we are not going to make a splash in free agency cuz nobody wants to come play for Loserville, USA with an unproven young QB, a head coach who has made some awful, awful coaching decisions and by the way is also 6-16 as well as a non-existent offensive line that couldn't give a four second pocket for a deep ball if their fucking life depended on it. Oh and the defense is a slow-motion abortion.

2) If we DO manage to woo a free agent, I think a huge prize would be Ben Grubbs (guard-Baltimore), Carl Nicks (guard-New Orleans), Paul Soliai (DT-Miami) or Brent Grimes (CB-Atlanta). If we got ONE of those dudes I'd be cool with that.

3) Ok, so, no one has been more on board with drafting Matt Kalil than me. No one. Like, since day one. And if they draft him, I'll be happy. HOWEVER, with people fucking freaking out over RGIII, I feel like there will still a bunch of dudes on the board that teams will totally fucking overreach for, like Blackmon or, well, Kalil. I'm kind of feeling if the stars align right maybe we trade down and build this team the right way, with draft picks and cheap labor. That said, I have zero faith in Frazier on any level, so I hope Spielman just shoves him aside and has the balls to do it the right way.
1/17/12 6:20 PM
Or maybe we take Blackmon and at least we'll sell tickets!

Manning won't come here. He'll want to play for someone who isn't totally rebuilding and that has a WR1. I could see him and Wayne being tied to the hip wherever they go. San Fransico make a good case for this as they had 3 WRs active for the playoffs and only Crabtree shows promise.
3/06/12 7:22 PM
It's hard to pass up the idea of Manning (We'd then at one point have two hall of fame guys from the 98 class...Moss/Manning) but we have to let Ponder grow. We have an ok back up QB situation with Webb and Rosencopter.

RGIII will be great, I really like him, but that kind of trade not only buries a franchise but condemns RGIII because the rest of the team will suck. The Vikes need to lay low and just focus on the draft. Kalil at #3.
magma90210

kai
3/10/12 10:09 AM
the only possibility of us not drafting Kalil would be if we trade down. Now that RG3 is locked up, I don't expect us to get much added value. blackmon, etc just aren't worth it to any other teams.

3/10/12 10:22 AM
Cool. I kinda wish we'd make a move on quarterback (would that Matt Flynn guy make any sense?) but it sounds like a no-go. Maybe i'm more down on Ponder than I should be. But he seems like the kind of guy who might, maybe, in a few years, be a mediocre quarterback that leads the team to 8-8 style seasons
kai
3/10/12 10:33 AM
we have too many other needs at other positions to even begin to think about a marginal upgrade at QB. this team is in full on rebuilding mode for 2-3 years now: our linebackers are old, our secondary is nonexistant, we have one good receiver, the list goes on. plus you just don't give up on a rookie after one season, especially one that began with a bare bones training camp, a horrid offensive line, etc. it's just way too soon to evaluate.

Mumbles, WRs have a really shitty track record when picked in the top ten. You could say, "what about Calvin Johnson at #2?" but would be met with "What about Darius Heyward-Bay, Michael Crabtree, Ted Ginn, Troy Williamson, Roy Williams, Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, Braylon Edwards etc..."

Offensive tackles have a higher statistical rate of success and from my perspective, a #1 WR makes between 4-8 catches per game, blocks a little bit, and may return a kick or two. Kalil will be making roughly 60-70 plays (50% of the league average) a game. I say even though it's not sexy, you do the right thing and get Kalil.

Jackson to Tampa Bay and I'm so, SO ok with that.

So, hey punks, let me ask you this. I understand that Washington is absolutely FUCKED given that they just had a $30 million cap penalty leveled against them meaning they have zero money left. They only way to stay under the cap is through the draft since the new collective bargaining agreement makes rookies cheap. That said, they won't have relevant draft picks for four years. And then, how in the FUCK did the Redskins sign Pierre Garcon yesterday??? This isn't sour grapes, I didn't want him on the Vikes, but goddamn what the fuck?
3/14/12 8:23 AM
Oh and to riff of of that thought, let me ask you this:

Mike Wallace, who is better than any of the other receivers in free-agency except maybe V Jackson, is a restricted free agent with a first round tender. I think he's worth it! I know we need to protect our picks and I believe in building through the draft, but Wallace for a first round pick. Thoughts? Let's get him!
Christ O Fire

I don't understand the "cap" at all. And not to get bitchy, but it makes me feel like the NFL is even closer than it already was to professional wrestling. Linebackers get off easy because they aren't supposed to have the sacks or interceptions that the line and the secondary are. But, man, name a single game where they did jack shit. They were atrocious. Couldn't stop the run, couldn't defend the pass.
magma90210
3/14/12 12:35 PM
yeah greenway def had an off year but i'd take the chance he will snap back to form rather than spend $$ on a linebacker...plus who's even out there in FA?

Oh, I have no idea about free agency. I only have a great basketball mind.

For sure, our secondary was shit last year. I'm telling you, though, our linebackers were baaaaaad, but the secondary caught all the heat.

Steven Tulloch is out there. Solid, not that big of an upgrade.

To whomever was screaming about three TE sets, the Carlson move means Bbay Arm is gone. Carlson is no less talented them Schiancoe and is five years younger, and possibly a few million cheaper. A pretty decent move imo.

3/14/12 10:34 PM
I'm totally cool with trading in Bbay's Arm for John Carlson Superstar. Carlson is younger and way more athletic, and two pimp TEs worked pretty well for the Patriots last year, and Harvin is like a way better Wes Welker, so I see what he's doing. I dig it.
But for real next year is all about Ponder so now use the draft for LT and the secondary and shit we'll be on our way.
Oh and that Washington signing Garcon with no cap room is really, REALLY pissing me off it's really souring me on football until I can get it explained.
groovylucifer
3/14/12 10:38 PM
I'm not sure where you got the idea Washington had "no" cap room. The cap penalty they're taking is spread over two years...
3/14/12 10:46 PM
Most teams keep 3 or 4 tight ends on the roster as the size/speed combo of those dudes is also useful for special teams (kinda like linebackers). GB kept 5 last year. As I recall they ran a 4 TE set on one play and scored a touchdown on it.
mumblecrust
3/14/12 10:48 PM
That must have been a pretty tight end to that particular drive
coach
3/14/12 10:51 PM
The list I saw had Washington at $4 million in cap room BEFORE the $36 million penalty imposed by the NFL. I totally get that it's over two years, but it's not like all of their contracts disappear at the end of the 2013 season. I can't imagine they'll be able to let go of $32 million in cap space next year. I know it's not a 1 to 1 ratio, but the math is lousy no matter what the particulars are.
groovylucifer
3/14/12 10:53 PM
So tight.

coach, this "kinda" explains it, though I'm not sure how they had "ample" cap room going into this year with their crazy spending. Perhaps being able to unload Tubogoo Haynesworth helped.
3/14/12 10:55 PM
3/14/12 10:59 PM
Or rather, after the NFL cap was finalized it was $32M. After the penalty they had about $14M to play with, which is more than enough to get Garcon & Morgan for this year. It sounds like they're looking at Eddie Royal too.

Vikings add defensive back from arena league

The Vikings signed a defensive back Friday, but it wasn't a normal case of free-agent activity.
The team announced that defensive back Nicholas Taylor, a 5-10 rookie from Florida International, had been added to the roster.
Taylor, 25, was a college basketball player at FIU from 2007 to 2010 and had been playing in a lower-tier arena football league before running 40-yard dashes at the school's pro day this month. The Vikings gave the 5-10, 165-pounder a workout Friday and signed him.

Fran Foley was let go because he totally lied about his resume

Foley, the Vikings' vice president of player personnel, described his coaching jobs at three schools -- Colgate, the Citadel and Rutgers -- as full-time assistant coaching jobs, when in fact he was a graduate assistant.

Also, a Rutgers spokeswoman told Star Tribune reporter Kevin Seifert that Foley was an administrative assistant from 1987 to 1990 -- not director of football operations, as the biography stated.

Earlier in the week, Seifert reported that Foley said a clerical error resulted in an overstatement of his college playing career at Framingham State College.

Foley played two seasons, in 1980 and '81, rather than four.

When asked whether he had attempted to embellish his career, Foley told Seifert, "I did nothing to misrepresent what I've done."

kai
4/25/12 5:30 PM
ok, actually read that piece, here are the important LT vs. DB in first round talking points:

Offensive line is the second-most-reliable place to avoid busts, finishing just ahead of linebackers and defensive backs.

Like wide receivers, defensive backs taken in the second round retain virtually all of the value from DBs taken in the first round, but they get paid a fraction of the cost on draft day. That little piece of information isn't enough to pass on a cornerback like Patrick Peterson on draft day, but it's enough to make other positions seem far more valuable. If you don't get a cornerback in the second round, though, you're probably better off passing altogether.

Christ O Fire
4/26/12 9:20 AM
i wanted Mike Pouncey (C for Dolphins), Prince Amukamara (CB for NY Giants) or Anthony Castanzo (T for the Colts).

from the accounts i've heard pouncey was awesome. castanzo was solid and people are excited about his future. amukamara didn't play too much as he was out most of the season with a broken foot so it's probably unfair to evaluate him. he got an interception toward the end of the year against the eagles and got some playing time in the super bowl though.
Beard & Butter
4/26/12 10:31 AM
Amukamara was the guy I wanted. Thought we were going to go T then.

You guys read that Buffalo wants to trade with us? They want Kalil. Their offer is only a 2nd rounder which is hilarious

4/26/12 10:35 AM
Well, their first (10) and their second (41) -- let's be fair.

Christ O Fire
4/26/12 10:37 AM

I didn't see the part where they'd give us 10. I think that's assumed but didn't see that

Now Tampa says they like Richardson and might trade with us. Perfect scenario is with them

I'd take the Tampa trade, for no other reason than you are still probably going to wind up with the guy you really wanted, and get a third rounder on top of it. Trade with Buffalo, and you wind up with none of the three guys you wanted.

1. If the Vikings pass on Matt Kalil, someone should be fired.

On Monday’s B.S. Report, both our editor-in-chief and former NFL GM Mike Lombardi agreed that to them, and to most executives, it was clear that Trent Richardson is the third-best prospect in this draft. If I had any sort of self-awareness or humility, I would probably defer to Lombardi on this one. It’s a good thing I don’t.

Now, saying Richardson is the third-best prospect doesn’t mean the Vikings should take him at no. 3. Minnesota already has a decent running back, and in terms of positional value, selecting a back third overall is a risky proposition. But my contention comes with their point itself.

When Stanford visited USC last season, many hyped the game as Andrew Luck vs. Matt Barkley, who were, at that time, the two quarterbacks expect to top draft boards in the offseason. But — in an all-time football nerd move — I was more excited about going to see the two offensive tackles on the top of everyone’s list.

Moose Martin from Stanford will be a first-round pick, and he played like it that night. He has good quickness that will likely make him a formidable blind-side pass blocker at the next level, but rarely did he overpower opposing linemen, even in college.

Watching Kalil is like watching a high school highlight film. The last college lineman I remember putting opposing players on skates like Kalil did that night was Oklahoma's Jammal Brown, who did it against USC in the 2004 national championship game. Even for those not coming to the game to watch him play, Kalil’s dominance was evident.

At almost 6-foot-7 and over 300 pounds, the guy has incredible feet and does a great job staying on balance in pass protection. If anything has become clear in the last several years, it’s that teams at the top of the draft who already have or can’t get a quarterback are often best served solving a bookend offensive line problem early on. Kalil is the guy who can do that, and Minnesota would be crazy to pass on that opportunity, no matter how valuable they say that pick is.
4/26/12 11:47 AM
Obv. the TB trade would be totally killer for us, given that we still lock up Kalil. We know the Browns wouldn't take him?

you are right, his rap sheet has red flags all over it. i just mean that the reports from his interviews have been pretty good considering his reputation, it's like he smokes weed but he doesn't go Johnny Jolly on it, he impregnates women, he doesn't go Chris Cook on 'em.

i'm stoked about Josh Robinson. blazing speed and a solid performer throughout college. i don't get why a guy like dontari poe who was a very average college player, starting just 12 games, recording 33 tackles and 1 sack for a 2-10 team and making second team conference usa is able to boost his stock so much by his combine performance while Robinson goes in the third round. Poe was the strongest guy in the draft, he weighs 345 lbs and ran a sub-5 second 40. Robinson was the fastest guy in the draft, has solid size for his position and also had the best broad jump, 3 cone drill amongst defensive backs and had the third best vertical. in other words, another combine superstar, just like Poe. except, Robinson produced at the college level. started 3 years. made freshman all-american team. two time conference usa first team. 10 interceptions. a couple of touchdowns. scouting reports i've seen say his weaknesses are run support and jamming receivers at the line. dontari has a lot more weaknesses than that. beautiful third round pick up.

i also like the greg childs pick. he was great back in the Ryan Mallett era before he tore his ACL, but if he's really back to normal (as his combine performance suggests) he's a steal in round 4.

Wow the NFL has even more problems. Apparently he shot himself in the chest like Dave Duerson did, the implication being that the only reason you'd do that is if you wanted your brain preserved for study. I think Duerson asked in his suicide note that his brain be sent to some university to be examined. I'm not a big enough fan to remember Marcelus Wiley as a player, but I've had a very high opinion of him as a person since moving out here and listening to his show, and he's still on air now even though his show ended an hour ago. He was just talking about how he cut his career short because he wanted to have a life when he was older and now he has to wonder if he didn't cut it short enough. Also mentioned that the NFLPA told him that the average life expectancy of a football player is something like 52 years. So nuts. I think there's going to have to be changes to the sport in the next couple decades.

The Vikings cut Ryan Longwell today. Kind of unbelievable. The reports on the guy they drafted in the sixth round were not too stellar, yet it looks like they are just handing him the job. I guess he's a bit of a big leg/shitty accuracy guy. Longwell was and still is an excellent kicker.

Any reasonable football player should come to the conclusion that they will win a super bowl with the vikings, eventually.

I would think requesting a trade in the NFL, especially in Harvin's position, is basically a guarantee that he won't get traded because all the teams will be coming in with low ball offers. Unless the Redskins trade their 2015 and 2016 1st round picks for him. He'll play out his 2 years and then go play for a good team.

Percy will be juuuust fiiiiine. AP will straighten him out.

With Rudolph and Carlson likely to be out on the field a lot, which in turn leaves two wideout sets, I wonder how they are going to utilize him. Do you line him up outside? Do they spell between Carlson and Rudolph and use three WO sets more often? Musgrave hasn't called for my input yet this season which is fairly concerning, even if it is just OTAs.

Christ O Fire
6/21/12 6:15 PM
i disagree wholeheartedly. the vikings have upheld their side of the deal only because it is in their interest to do so. if his performance wasn't worth the money they'd agreed to pay him they would cut him and thereby refuse to pay him what they agreed to. all nfl teams do this. therefore, if the player is outperforming his contract, he should have full right to try and leverage his value to get more than the original agreement.
boris parsley
6/21/12 6:20 PM
Nfl contracts are non-guaranteed bullshit. Each side has their leverage and rarely does it favor the player. This would be a timely exception.
jawknee
6/21/12 6:21 PM
Yeah, I agree to an extent..

The flip side is when those guys sign long-term contracts, they (and their agents) know they may be trading the highest possible year to year earnings for stability (and still what is a lot of money). The team can always get burned if/when players don't perform. There are way more busts than players who outperform.
Uncle Jam
6/21/12 6:30 PM
The owners definitely have the leverage in the NFL, more than any other league. Percy's production last year more than cancel out any injury issues and time he's missed IMO. He deserves more money, undoubtedly, but he can't expect the Vikes to pay him more and still get out of here in 2 years, but it sounds like that might not be the case. This is weird.

All that said, I was kinda surprised to see how highly paid some NFL players are, it's annoying to look at this list but it's still a list nonetheless: Forbes 100 highest paid athletes

A ton of football players are up high, several making more than 30 million a year.

those people on the list dan and uncle jam are citing ARE NOT making those figures on a per year basis. those numbers include signing bonuses. that may be how much they'll take home this year, but it's not what they make each year of their contract. sure they're still walking away with a ton of money but the truth is there isn't a single NFL player that makes $30 million per year.

jawknee, i don't think you are getting that the team's can cut a player at any time, and no matter how many years they have left on their contract the team doesn't have to pay it. the team can opt out at any time. recently they started putting in guaranteed money for star players and top draft picks, but even then the teams can opt out and pay just the guaranteed amount instead of the full value of the contract.
