Totally love the Sound Horizon shows. Was planning to make it to this one but my out-of-town houseguest is arriving early. I could drag her along...
er, wait ... this isn't part of the Sound Horizon series.

But I'll go none the less.

Yeah, it's still a Free and wonderful event.

Jaap Blonk Demo/Talk with Lunch
noon, Wednesday, March 28, at Lind Hall 207A
Jaap Blonk is one of Europe's foremost "sound poets," melding a virtuosic command of the building blocks of language with an aesthetically riveting performance style. Blonk will stop by Lind Hall for lunch Wednesday to talk about and give a demonstration of sound poetry (free; no tickets necessary).

how many /24 networks are there in a /16 subnet? is it 255 or 254?
it's totally 255. it's gotta be.
0 to 255 would certainly make more sense if you're asking about 8 bits.
unless 255 is not usable. but that would just be complete bananas.
Why wouldn't 255 be usable? I'm glad we had this talk.
well because I was thinking about how 255 in the last decimal or whatever is not usable because that is considered the broadcast address. barfed basically :(
it was a good talk. it was poetry one time.

was what i expected, fuckin' cool. was glad he freaked out/bored the square family next to me, and these two trendy young gals early on who then decided to leave. he actually seemed quite shy after the show when i spoke with him. his use of a video game controller to make sounds/manipulations from his own software was pretty cool. glad i had the opportunity to see the guy in person.

Tevs, he's no Elizabeth Fraser*.
J/K
I wasn't able to go, but had never heard of this guy, anyway.
I have a love/hate relationship with mouth sounds/experimental vocals. Like, when it's done well (C. Spencer Yeh comes to mind) it sounds awesome. But often I find stuff like this to be irritating gibberish. I checked out some of his stuff on YouTube, and of the five things I watched/listened to, I liked two and the rest wasn't really my bag. The dude clearly has an effortless approach and a heavy command of glossolalia, I'll hand him that.
Given my innate bias, my opinions of experimental vocals are obviously highly subjective. I keep waiting for it to click, but it just doesn't. I like so much other weird, abrasive and confrontational shit that you'd think I'd be into this, but alas...
*I actually do think Fraser is a genius.

Really good crowd at this thing. Good times. The Kurt Schwitters sonata was beautiful.

After each piece ended I noticed a mass exodus, like, row by row. Pretty funny. I was surprised by his calm and shy demeanor during the Q&A. While he was performing I was thinking "man, he would be a tough roommate to have."

With you. I enjoyed bits and pieces of it and I'm glad I went...but I can't say I would seek it out. My son would have LOVED this guy but it's so hard to know which Walker events will go over well with him. But he would have likely annoyed the crap out of me for months trying to imitate Jaap. I have photos but am too lazy to post them just now.

Me too. Love love love her.

So what this dude is like a human beatbox but for white arties?

Kinda, sure. I loved this thing through and through. Gamelan piece was beautiful, as were both Cage pieces.

Wait, you were there too? How did I not see anyone! Except for the person I sat with.

Teddy only went up in the rafters after he got bored standing directly behind Blonk conforming to his every move.

Amen. The thing that blew me away was his capacity to take these formalist high-modern works
and manage to deliver them so they're lively and fresh and engaging, rather than straight-up
didactic period pieces. (Exception and counter-example: the opening piece.)
Is the n that tips it pure enthusiasm? Sheer force of will? Whatever it is, awesome.
I missed the opening piece. But YEAH, I totes agree. He has that unique mix of humor and virtuosity and intellect and warmth that's, well, really unique. I love that area. It's inviting music/art, but not pandering to base consumer-culture, and high-brow in its sensibility, but not at the sake of becomeing pretentious, you know?
