Jesus Christ this shit is SO over saturated now, I'm so sick of shitty "indie","underground" back packer hip hop from Minnesota. Dont get me wrong there is some good stuff, but man alot of it is almost embarassing to listen to.
I actually haven't heard very much of it. I guess I should just stop listening to my own band all the time.
Kudos for bringing a little edge back to the MRMB, though.
Even bloodface has been getting soft.

Yeah, I dislike alot of shit, i am no hater though, just a Disliker. everything cant be sterile all the time, i have to ruffle some feathers. IMAGE REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW

i am indifferent towards it because for the most part i don't really care for rap like that. the beats always tend to sound like sub-par versions of 36 chambers and the subject matter, if it was set to an acoustic guitar, is borderline dashboard confessional. this is my outlook on most indie hip hop though, not just mpls stuff.

I agree with the sentiment of this thread.
I hate how all those dudes use the EXACT same cadence. It's pretty much the same as the "spoken word poet" cadence, where they sound like they are whining all the time.
What do you mean "sound like"?
doomtree was holding a contest for dates with each member. that's ridiculous. so is graffiti on a fake wall placed on a theater's stage.
local hip hop is a pose (as I've so far seen) and i agree with Mr. ReggieQueequeg as per that same cadence is used AKA the slam-poet idea of a good song.
sorry, but our local hip hop doesn't do it for me. no matter what my roommate says.
yeah, it can be pretty bad, and i think it has as much to do with the beats as it does the rapping. personally, i think i really great beat can make an average rapper sound much better, but it's harder the other way around. seems like whenever i hear a song that i read about as having a great beat to it in city pages or wherever, my reaction at best is "not bad." kill the vultures are amazing though, i really love them. they've got everything going. also played a show with big quarters, they seemed ok, but i missed most of their set, and haven't heard anything since.
That is fucking retarded, they cant get dates on their own? or like their so big they need to hold a contest ?, I would be pissed if I was someone in that group and a member came up with that idea of having a contest to go on date. I hope someone brings that up in a battle against someone is that group if they already havnt. that group is very sub par in my opinion anyway so i guess it doesnt matter much.
chamillionaire is one guy who can take an average beat and make a absolute banger out of it. that man is a rap fucking god. when he was doing albums with paul wall, paul actually said "to tell you the truth, chamillionaire is better than me" on a track. he's from houston though. which makes him a syrup sipper. wish i could be more objective, but we are friends on myspace, so, you know. haven't heard his new major label debut though, so who knows how that'll be.
Before you get all offended and feel the need to "put me in my place" over this matter, realize that this is somebody on a messagebored that has an opinion that SHOULDNT matter. with that said save your breath (or typing).

come on now, we are talking twin cities no others.

friend of mine and i kinda agree with him
meh.
if chamillionaire were here, he would come up with a creative way of telling you that we can talk about other cities as well, and it would rhyme.
ok ok
totally up front, i haven't heard THE MAJORITY of local hip hop to make an all engrossing assessment, but i can comfortably say that all "indie" hip hop i've heard is bummer pop.
theres so much out there. terrible and awesome, i think.
im totally into doomtree though.
Bummer pop.
That rules.
twin cities hip hop does suck if you are into innovative stuff. fuck atmosphere especially. so overhyped that i don't even need to say more. on the other hand, booka b does some pretty nice shit. heiruspecs makes pretty damn good hip hop as well. but i'm more of a mf doom / ice cube / talented rap appreciater. i really don't like this surge of "emotional" rap. fucking sick of rap songs about your "shorty" and how you luv her 4 life. but hate yourself etc etc. this doesn't make any sence really but its 430am
the hype on atmosphere is pretty unreal and confusing around here, for sure. i have a hard time breaking through it and just listening to the music for what it is sometimes. but in their defense, ant does come up with some cool shit. and it's not like slug is complete garbage all the time. emorap420 would make a nice license plate in a perfect world.
yeah, 4:30am.
you ever check out any heiruspecs mike? how about M.O.P.? they aren't local though.
i saw a heiruspecs/dalek show at the 400 bar that was pretty amusing. dalek had their roadie who just does guitar feedback open up, and the people there to see heiruspecs were just pissed. lots of angry/funny heckling, a really strange scene. everyone just took off for dalek. i didn't see enough of heiruspecs to make a judgement, and this was a few years ago. i'd check them out if the opportunity pre-sen-ted itself. never heard of m.o.p.
that roadie performs under the name of destructo swarmbots (maybe just one word) if anyone's interested. he's on myspace. rad dude.
dalek=good
heiruspecs is a full band deal. i have both there albums, decent shit, feels a bit watery to me at time
MOP is like hardcore shit, lots of heavy metal beats and shit, on rocafella, now on g unit label. if you want mp3s of them GET AT ME HOMIE!
wow, I won't even touch this thread. I think making big sweeping generalizations like this is sort of weak but whatever. I don't know local hip-hop that well but what I have heard I have found to be pretty cool. I don't care if it doesn't sound like what people think it should sound like.
I don't like this genre. That said, one of the worst things I've ever listened to was Craig Finn's "rapping" with I guess the P.O.S. guy (dunno, I don't follow that so I'm not sure who he was) at the First Ave. 35th anniversary show last week. Also Jessy Green joined in on fiddle. And some other woman. Barrff.
But the crowd seemed to love it, so who am I to say?
i think the crowd loved it because of who the people on stage are.
"who's that crummy rapper"
"dude, don't you know, that's craig finn!!"
"oh yeah!!! he's totally cool"
P.O.S. can fucking flow. I agree with tom about this being a rather ridiculously sweeping sentiment. Just because a couple dozen folks wish they were Slug doesn't mean the other however many hundred all suck and sound the same. Much like the rock scene, they probably all suck and sound different.
ha-HA!
i dont' think all of it sucks? or are you not talking about me? heiruspecs are good and so is booka b to an extent. I Self Devine definetly has some good moments. I guess i was trying to say that this whole push around atmosphere, their content etc. make me wanna leave the one i'm with and start a new relationship with youuuuuuuuu
Reading that City Pages article made me think how there's lots of double-standards regarding Rock and Rap. If a Rock act talks about Bible Study, they're immediately panned as Christian Rockers which of course is totes uncool in the scene. But the rappers are almost expected to do the God-talk and it's all cool and shit I guess.
But I agree with sweeping generalizations of any sort regarding a local music scene. Same as it ever was, anywhere. Lots of shit, some cool stuff. You have to dig.
The one Rhymesayers dude that I think is way overlooked is Musab. I have a 12 inch called "Actin' Rich" that's really great...always meant to get his CD...he's got a much more mid/late 90s NYC type Nas/Cormega/AZ type thing going on...more street less emo....
....I keep meaning to check out POS.....I kinda dig Atmosphere but it's getting a lil' old....
....the biggest problem with underground hip hop in general, not just TC, is the BEATS, not the flows, to me....man...it's like dudez quit dusting off old Jay-Dee/Ummah/DJ HI-TEK/fake Pete Rock stuff.....mainstream hip hop's beats are just so crazy now.....man...just downloaded the song "Stay Fly" by Eightball and MJG feat. 3-6 Mafia...it's nuts.......I'm so sick of underground's simple kick snare boom bap drum machine patterns..it's all so midtempo, blah...
The stuff by Kill The Vultures and Mel Gibson and the Pants sounds really good to me. I can't stand Atmosphere at all. It drives me a-crazy!
yeah, you should check out dalek if you want crazy beats (in my opinion)
madlib obviously busts crazy beats too
i didn't know mel gibson and the pants were hip hop! never saw 'em, i guess i assumed they were a rock band cuz of the name..
also, never heard dalek, kill the vultures, either..will investigate.
Also, I kinda quit paying attention to underground hip hop a while back, so there could be tons of great stuff I'm not hearing.....it just got to the point where I was like, "Okay, yep, I was into all that late 90s Rawkus stuff, I don't need to hear another worse vers. of it."......
...I did see a band called Why? (Anticon I think?) open for The Fog...they were cool, but almost more of a wierd indie rock band with rapping...they were like a backpacker Built to Spill or something....
If it aint talkin about smokin bluntz and fuckin ho's, Im not into it.

I think I tuned out on rap in general around 1994. Around the time when everyone started ripping off either Del/Souls of Mischief or Wu Tang.
3rd Bass 4ever.
St. Pauli GRZZILLA! He's pretty fly for a white guy. Witty lyrics usually about some sex act or another.
That Sims guy is probably the best local (um, do they still call them "MC's"? I'll go with MC) MC I've seen.
I liked Phull Circle when I saw them many a year ago.
Played a show with Traditional Methods a few years ago and I thought they were good.
Mel Gibson and the Pants is recommended. They're not what you'd call "traditional" hip-hip.
there's some really good hiphop here, it just doesn't get anywhere NEAR the press that whiny atmosphere stuff gets.
Tom - Speaking for myself, I'm not making ANY generalizations. I liked alot of local hip hop when I was younger, even though there wasnt as large of a scene as there is now. Although I am guilty of liking some of this style of hip hop (you'll find some Anticon,RSE), I think the majority of it coming out that I HAVE given a real shot since some of these kids I know and grew up with who are trying to perform this music and fail miserabley and I dont really understand how a following has started over it. However if it makes them happy to do it, I guess why not let them without giving them shit. But maybe if someone reads things like this it will make them strive to better their music and themselves and make somone like me eat my words.
I even like Atmosphere alright, really....I ilked the Lucy Ford EPs when they came out...I remember I had that old Headshots tape that's since been reissued...
yeah, my friends had that Headshots tape, that would be ebay gold.
"Lucy Ford" was really, really good. "Overcast" had some great songs.
I think the newest Atmos is terrible and he spawned alot of crappy local hip hop and made alot of my friends from high school think they could rhyme, but I like Lucy Ford, and LOVE Overcast, I get very nostalgic when I listen to that record. there is a track that I think was only on the vinyl of Overcast called "Gods Bathroom Floor" that i love so much.
this is so bizarre and timely. I've been listening to a lot of local hip hop lately. I agree the whole "spoken word poet" rap is getting a tad played out here. That said, Heiruspecs and Traditional Methods are two of my favorites. It seems every Atmosphere show I see gets progressively worse and worse.
Doomtree's New Year's eve performance last year at the Triple Rock soured my whole perspective on local hip hop. Worst. Show. Ever. Though, "2005 time for a bang trim!" has become a running joke amongst friends, and for that, I'm grateful
yeah, my friends had that Headshots tape, that would be ebay gold.
yeah no shit! i kick myself for that! it prolly got left in the floorboards of one of my old cars...
Kill The Vultures = fucking awesome.
Heiruspecs are cool as well.
I think Stef (pos) is good as well.
I actually think from what I have heard Kill the Vultures is pretty ah-ok with me. Heiruspecs are pretty meh for me though.
I think what turns me on about Heiruspecs is the whole "live band" deal. Peter, and Sean are fucking great musicians, so that makes it all the better.
yeah i agree with you there, the band is really good i saw them like 4 or 5 times but that was like 4 years ago and had one of their cds, but for some reason or another sold it to cheapo.
I wonder if Peter was even drumming for them? He is their 7th and 9th drummer.
last years new years show was a drunken mess fore everyone. i would maybe give doomtree a better chance.
in defense of atmosphere, those guys get a lot of press cuz they put themselves out there so much. gone out of town constantly pushing what they do. which is, in their words, just trying to hold it down for their hometown.
Atmos had paid their dues, no gripes about them except the newer stuff is very meh.
The main problem with any midwest music and art is its difficulty finding its own identity. For example, just because you are "rapping" doesn't mean you are obligated to do it with a Brooklyn accent. This is all I can say.
And I don't mean a black accent, that's different.
Peace.
You totally mean black. Racist.
said it earlier, and so have a couple others, but to reiterate: kill the vultures is fucking awesome. love the album, convinced them to do a show with hh, and now i love the live act to.
Ice-Rod.
Good one. Anyone see that show he did at the Babylon when he covered it in plastic and threw food at people throughout his set? Bongwife got a pie in the face. It was priceless.
word on the street= he's coming back with a whole new project.
im not sure if its ok to discuss it yet, but it sounds dope. perhaps someone else here can explain further.
Sister is leaving for awhile, so yes...

i miss ice rod. that paper airplane song was hott.

the icerod show where he drank "urine" at the babylon was amazing. the shirts that he had were key. the eagle swooping down and pissing "icerod" is my favorite shirt i have ever seen by a band.
if you're a fan of michael gaughan's brain, be sure to come to the show he's doing jan 7. i only know about the part we're playing, and it's going to be a lot of fun.

Im glad this thread got bumped today, cause I wanted to post somewhere about Mike Mictlan's new release he dropped last night called SNAXXX.
Its super duper good, IMHO.

Fuck y'all ghosts of Christmas past
