MODERN RADIO IS 9 YEARS OLD!

We see nothing in the rule book that says milestones should come in half or whole decade increments. 9 is a nice enough number and why not use the occasion to celebrate the community of artists and friends that have gotten us to this point. Plus, Modern Radio was started in the year 1999. We are bringing folks in town from around the country, bringing a few bands back from the dead and involving as many people associated with the label as possible. It's so gratifying to see so many people we've worked with over the years do amazing things, artistically and otherwise. We are pleased to bring you 9 days of events presented as the Modern Radio 9 Year Anniversary Extravaganza!

We start things off with a gallery opening at the First Amendment Arts space, artwork by Modern Radio artists and friends. The galley will include show posters, flyers, album art and photographs documenting the music and artistic endeavors of many within our community.  The Carrots and Togetherness (Bro v. Wade) will perform at the gallery opening along with DJ Jonathan Ackerman. The work will be on display throughout the 9 year festivities with additional gallery hours upon request. The Carrots feature the one and only Gene Defcon on bass. Years ago, we released a 7” by Gene Defcon and this is Chris' first time back in town since 2000. The list of gallery exhibitors included so far is Adam Bubolz, Aesthetic Apparatus, Burlesque of North America, Carl Wedoff (Malachi Constant/Togetherness), Dan Black/Landland, Danimal (Gay Beast), Greg Schaal, Sharyn Morrow and Tom Stack.

We have several records coming out in conjunction with these anniversary events.

Our second release by Portland’s Yellow Swans is a CD called Deterioration. These 57 minutes of pure bliss is likely to be their final CD release. After playing around the world and releasing a ton of amazing material, Yellow Swans are calling it a day. They have a few remaining shows scheduled this summer including one last Twin Cities performance as part of the 9 year anniversary. So don't forget to see them Friday, June 6th at the Triple Rock.

We are also very excited to be releasing a CD by Mirah. This project has long been in the works and has evolved into a huge collection of out-of-print, hard to find and previously unreleased material. The album, The Old Days Feeling is 14 tracks, including several songs from the out of print Small Sale 7" we released in 2001. Mirah hasn't been in town to perform in over four years so Friday, May 30th at the Triple Rock will be the first opportunity for folks to get the new release and see her live.

Also performing with Mirah on the May 30th show is The Danforths, The Chambermaids and a newcomer to the label, Jim and the French Vanilla. For those who aren't familiar, this is the solo project of Jim from the Blind Shake. We'll be releasing a limited run of hand packaged CDs called Roll Out the Candy. We will be helping The Danforths with a new release later this year. The Chambermaids have also added guitar player Nate Nelson (STNNNG, Private Dancer) to the lineup.

As an added bonus several Twin Cities bands from Modern Radio folklore have agreed to play during the festivities. One of those bands Sicbay will be reuniting at the Triple Rock on Friday, June 6th. They will play with Yellow Swans and Church of Gravitron of Omaha. FT(The Shadow Government) and STNNNG will also be unveiling a special collaborative effort. Modern Radio will be reissuing Church of Gravitron's genius, The Divorce Tape, this spring with a short run of CDs.

Four Twin Cities bands from Modern Radio's history Malachi Constant, Grotto, Volante and Cave Deaths will all get together at the Turf Club, Saturday, May 31 for a all-out, full-blown St. Paul midway party. Comedian Nils Lindahl will emerge from retirement to emcee the event. Robot Comic has also been rumored to perform. Malachi Constant will make available the long anticipated band documentary created by superfans Brett and Bill. The DVD will include a CD of live and previously unreleased songs. This is a one off show for all of these bands who haven’t played in years, including Grotto who hasn't played since 2002. We are excited to see them all one more time!

Wichita’s Weather is Happening will be playing a show with Private Dancer, Everybell & Whistle and Cryptacize (Asthmatic Kitty) on Thursday June 5th at the Turf Club. You may know Weather is Happening from Dan and Casey's previous band Rickyfitts. They are long time friends of the label and we are happy to have them up to be part of the celebration. Modern Radio will be helping Private Dancer with their first album, released later this Summer.

For our final event of this 9 year anniversary extravaganza, on June 7 at the Turf Club, Chicago's Tornavalanche and Tight Phantomz will join Twin Cities' His Mischief, Vampire Hands and Double Bird who is the new band of David, Pete and Ben of Signal To Trust. New releases by Tornavalanche and His Mischief are planned for later this year on Modern Radio.

Other events with details to come include a BBQ and a Modern Radio and friends hosted 2-4-1s at the Triple Rock Social Club on Tuesday June 3.  DJ TRL (Tom Loftus) will be playing records with other friends and members of the Modern Radio community

Thanks to everyone who has made the last 9 years worth celebrating.
