This is the stuff that gets us excited and drives us to do the label. We want to help document and share music with people because music has given us so much pleasure and enjoyment.

We previously mentioned the ongoing evolution of the message board. Well, due to persistent hackers we've had to pull a few pages from our website. Stay calm. The bands and catalog pages will be back soon. The board is a work in progress as well and we appreciate your patience.

Finally, we'd like to thank Gimme Noise at City Pages for including us in their list of top 10 record labels in Minnesota. We're honored to be mentioned along with so many other great MN labels. The list included a bunch of honorable mentions, but we'd be remiss if we didn't take the opportunity to mention a few other MN labels who have been doing cool stuff for awhile like Roaratorio and Old Blackberry Way

May News Update

Spring seems to have finally arrived in the Twin Cities, which brings a ton of fun events around town, including the 18th annual Art-A-Whirl. May 17-19 are the dates for the the largest open studio tour in the country and right in the heart of the action in Northeast Minneapolis is the 331 Club's weekend long indoor/outdoor party. With over 25 bands playing all weekend long for FREE it's sure to be a killer event. As usual great food and drink will be enjoyed by all and we'll be on hand this year to sell records throughout the weekend, including the soon to be released STNNNGVRNMNT 12" EP.

Both STNNNG and ft (The Shadow Government) will be headlining the outdoor stage on Saturday with individual sets and a collaborative set that will serve as the release show for the "Remarkable Citizen" release show. This show is a very RARE opportunity to see ft (The Shadow Governmen) and even rarer chance to see STNNNGVRNMNT. To add to the already palpable anticipation for this very limited record we have one of the tracks streaming on Soundcloud. The EP includes a download of the music and is the only way to get the full record digitally for the time being.

You might have already heard the opening song off the record Hater as their video homage to worn out, 4th generation, VHS home recordings. The rest of the record we can say is an amazing collection of gloomy pop songs about how being young sucks and being old sucks, how the modern world sucks, how basically everyone sucks, oh yeah, and death. Needless to say, we think it's a beautiful record and we can't wait to share it with all of you.

April News Update

This has been long in the making and we're thrilled to bring this joint venture to life. STNNNGVRNMNT is the collaborative effort between Minneapolis juggernaut STNNNG who are just on the heels of releasing their own full-length Empire Inward and ft (The Shadow Government), the five-headed Midwest monster hailing from Chicago/Iowa/Milwaukee/Duluth. The two bands have toured with each other throughout the Midwest in the 00's and the friends joined forces to create as one. The 10-piece combo performed mind melting shows that leveled audiences and inspired both groups to document the songs they wrote together. The result is our next release STNNNGRVNMNT "Remarkable Citizen".

This new EP will be a limited release of just 100 12 records that features all ten members of both bands performing together. The songs were recorded at Luke Tweedy Flat Black Studios in Iowa City over the course of several years and will finally be unveiled at the 331 Club for their Art-A-Whirl bash in NE Minneapolis, Saturday, May 18th. Look for an update featuring a stream of one of the songs in the near future.

Art-A-Whirl is a large celebration of the artistic community residing in northeast Minneapolis and it takes place in a variety of galleries, clubs and spaces. The 331 will have a full day and night of music inside and out which includes bands like Marijuana Deathsquads, Crimes, Heavy Deeds as well as STNNNGVRNMNT who will each perform individual sets as well as a collaborative set to end the night. FT(The Shadow Government) play only on rare occasion these days plus with the added bonus of the collaboration, it will make for a special show not to be missed. We love Art-A-Whirl and can't help being extra thrilled this year. Here's the full lineup.

March News Update

Hollow Boys - Hater video
In a previous update we announced that we would be working with the Hollow Boys to unleash their new album, "It's True". The band threw together a music video for the first single,Hater. The results can only be chalked up to the combination of booze, a broken furnace and an old VHS camcorder on a cold winter day. If you live in the upper Midwest, you know what these days look like and it gives you an introduction to their brand of masterful, highly addictive, dreamy, gloom-pop. Hater will burrow deep in to your brain and leave you helpless to resist. In fact, it's already inspired fans to create their own covers of the song. You can also stream Hater on Soundcloud.

In addition to making weird, VHS, winter boredom videos, Hollow Boys have been busy plotting out a Spring tour which will take them out West and back to the lovely Midwest. Here's the rough dates and cities that are subject to change.

5/6 - Fargo, ND
5/7 - Missoula, MT
5/8 - Spokane, WA
5/9 - Seattle, WA
5/10 - Olympia, WA
5/11 - Portland, OR
5/12 - Eugene, OR
5/13 - Arcata, CA
5/14 - Chico, CA
5/15 - Sacramento, CA
5/16 - San Francisco, CA
5/17 - Santa Cruz, CA
5/18 - San Luis Obispo, CA
5/19 - Los Angeles, CA
5/20 - Las Vegas, NV
5/21 - Salt Lake City, UT
5/22 - Denver, CO
5/23 - Omaha, NE
5/24 - Iowa City, IA

Those of you in other nearby towns / state throughout the Midwest and West coast, don't hesitate to get in touch either. We'll have more details on the specifics as they come together. Until then, the band just updated their Bandcamp site listing a bunch of cool shows in Minneapolis, including the Gospel Gossip release show at the Entry and another Entry show with Purling Hiss. Here's the details.

February News Update

We're so excited to officially announce that Modern Radio will be putting out the new Hollow Boys record this Spring. Their cynical gloom rock and loud raucous live sound won us over this last year. Tom thinks they sound like a perfect marriage of Thee Oh Sees, The Smiths and Voxtrot. If you know Tom, you know why we sound so giddy! You might recognize the vocals of Ali Jafaar from his previous band Zombie Season. His playing is complemented nicely with the vocals and drumming of Monica Coleslaw and bass playing of Liz Elton. Ali is also responsible for recording records by Twin Cities bands we are fans of like Crimes, Prissy Clerks and Funeral and the Twilight in his studio Ecstattic Attic. This upcoming record is going to knock your socks off. We'll be unveiling songs from the new album in the coming months, but for now you can check out their last EP When You Think of Us, Pray For Us or check out their funalbum preview videos.

It's time for another Modern Radio Night at the Kitty Cat Klub! This series started last March with the Jim and the French Vanilla record release and this month we've brought together two of the best pyched out, space rockers in town Flavor Crystals and Leisure Birds to round out a year of great music. We've also got DJs TRL and Chase from Radio K as well as restocks and new records in the mobile store from Soft Abuse, Roaratorio, Guilt Ridden Pop and Learning Curve. So come by and hang out with us Thursday, February 7. It's Free as always and should be a ton of fun.

CORRECTION: We'd like to update details regarding the big STNNNG record release and 10 year anniversary on Saturday, February 23rd. Simultaneous ID shows will still be at Big V's and the Turf Club The sole all ages event will take place earlier in the day at Midway House. There will not be multiple all ages events as previously announced. Speaking of house shows, do yourself a favor and check out this recent City Pages article with Nate from STNNNG reminiscing about his past house show experiences. It's a fun read and a nice trip down memory lane.

Pre-sale tickets and current information for the STNNNG release show is available through ticketfly and lineups have just been announced. Pre-order of the new record Empire Inward is available now at modern-radio.com for a limited time price of $12 and will ship out on Valentines Day. Digital downloads will be sent via email within a day or two of order, beginning now, so expect to hear this epic record soon!

STNNNG Record Release Show/10 Year Anniversary Celebration

Well the cat's out of the bag and we can finally begin announcing the details regarding STNNNG''s record release show and 10 Year Anniversary celebration, which will all take place on Saturday, February 23rd. If you missed Chris's interview on The Local Show you can check out the transcript online. It's a great conversation about the band's recent adventures recording their new record with Steve Albini, mastering it at legendary studio Abbey Road and playing the Shellac curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Camber Sands England. He also discusses the process of producing a completely analog record and they announce details regarding the big event on 2/23.

STNNNG's first show was at Saint Paul's Big V's, so it seems fitting that they return a decade later to the dive bar where the chaos started. Saturday, February 23rd will mark the release of the band's 4th full length album Empire Inward as well as commemorate the band's 10th year in existence. To celebrate these feats, the band has curated a blockbuster set of shows in St. Paul's Midway. Simultaneous shows will occur at Big V's and Turf Club. Bands will perform in a staggered schedule allowing folks to go back and forth between venues to see all the bands. Additionally, STNNNG will play an all ages show at Midway House earlier in the day as well as a 4th show yet to be announced. It's certain to be a full day of amazing music.

Now to the line-up that has us beyond excited!!!!! Modern Radio stalwarts and two of the best bands to come out of the Twin Cities in the last 10 years, Signal To Trust and Vampire Hands, are coming from near and far to celebrate STNNNG's new album. Killer bands from the Twin Cities play as well including Animal Lover, Weakwick, Buildings and Gay Witch Abortion. Rounding it out will be Omaha's Robot Comic and Chicago's Tight Phantomz.

Pre-sale tickets are available through ticketfly. We'll have more information about specific times and lineups soon. So get excited people! The new record is amazing and February 23rd is already looking to be the best event of 2013. Pre-order of the U.S. pressing is available now at modern-radio.com for $12.

Finally, for you STNNNG fans overseas that have been devotedly mail-ordering the band's records all these years, we have exciting news. French label Rejuvenation Records will be releasing "Empire Inward" in Europe. Greg from Rejuvenation is a great guy that has been a big supporter of STNNNG for years, so we're excited to have him and the good people at Rejuvenation to help introduce STNNNG to awesome people across the ocean. Check out Rejuvenation Records for more information regarding the European release of the record.

STNNNG News Update

To highlight STNNNG's triumphant return home from the UK, we introduce to you Brain-Dumb, the first song & video from the forthcoming record "Empire Inward", set for release, early 2013.

The video was conceived by filmmaker Jake Rapp and will be the first of several songs and videos that we will be unvailing as we come closer to the release date. Enjoy!

As you know, the band left for London awhile back to accomplish two things, master their new record at Abbey Road Studios and perform at All Tomorrow's Parties. STNNNG was able to hand deliver their recording and sit in on the session. They also got a chance to briefly tour parts of the facility and area so famously captured in rock history.

STNNNG played an ATP warmup show with D.Rider before heading to Camber Sands for the festival. They shared the festival stage with the likes of Uzeda, Shellac and more. All reports show the band as being well recieved and fun had by all. We can't wait to catch up at length with the guys to hear all about their adventures. We'll share photos and videos with you soon via twitter and facebook. This review of the performance from The Line of Best Fit warms our hearts!

"Almost entirely unknown in the UK, Minneapolis’ STNNNG took early Friday evening by the neck, held it’s squirming body against the wall then screamed into it’s eyes until it begged for more. If you don’t fancy Bill Hicks fronting The Jesus Lizard then please see a psychiatrist. If you do? Get involved. STNNNG are a band that have a short fuse and are primed to explode with their fourth album due early next year. From the tracks debuted here it’s hard to think of a band of this type with this magnitude of potential since At The Drive-In. Yes – they’re that good. It’s obligatory to go from blinkered ignorance to blind worship in the space of a single hour at ATP – this time around this was the band for the job."

November News Update

Y'all have a nice Turkey day? It's getting cold in the Twin Cities but we're excited for a busy winter!

We're ecstatic to be sending off STNNNG this week, for All Tomorrow's Parties, curated by Shellac. ATP dubbed this one "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and it will take place in Camden, England on November 30 - December 2nd. The location is outside the cities a bit and will include the likes of Neurosis, Melt Banana, Wire and Mission of Burma in addition to Shellac. The STNNNG boys will also be playing an ATP warmup show presented by Triplejump Records with Dead Rider, Joey Fat and Silent Front, on November 29 at The Black Heart in Camden. In addition to playing this legendary festival with legendary bands, the gents will be hand delivering their new record to be mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.  Needless to say there's a lot of thrilling events happening for the band with even more exciting announcements to come. So stay tuned to STNNNG.net for the latest on the band and their upcoming record. Our friends who run Sickroom Records along with a number of others from the states are headed over to check out the festivities. We sadly won't be making the jaunt unless someone can find space in their luggage or we strike rich on one of the money making ideas we have been throwing around. There is a good buck in selling making kid versions of Oxbow songs, right??

Back stateside, we put together a stellar lineup for Modern Radio Night at the Kitty Cat Klub on December 6th. Experimental chamber-rock trio Brute Heart joins us at the Kitty Cat Klub along with electric violinist David Sutton. DJing this month is Drew Christopherson who runs Totally Gross National Product and plays drums in Poliça. The women of Brute Heart will be serving up double duty by providing tunes between live performances. DJs start at 9pm and live music at 10pm - FREE 21+ We've got lots of goodies in the mobile store that will make fantastic holiday gifts for friends and family with an ear for awesome music.

You've seen them around for years and you've been asking about them already. We'll be making another round of Modern Radio hoodies this winter. If you're interested in ordering one, email tom@modern-radio.com They're versatile, handsome and most importantly, they'll help keep you warm. Those of you who live in the Midwest; you know what we're talking about!

Thanks for listening. Cheers,
Tom and Pete

September News Update

STNNNG at First Avenue with Shellac & Bellini earlier this month was epic. All bands were in top form and did not disappoint. It was announced at the show that STNNNG was invited to play All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the UK. The Shellac curated festival is located at the Camber Sands Holiday Camp from Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 and is already sold-out. This is the first time STNNNG have been overseas so get ready Brits (and world travelers). The line-up is mind blowing. Wire, Oxbow, Mission of Burma, Neurosis, Mono and others grace the stage over three days. If that's not enough, Jay Ryan is designing the poster for the festival. We're plotting out ways to sneak along. Send us creative ways. We can go media mail, right?

October's Modern Radio Night at the Kitty Cat Klub features a special visit from our friend Sheridan Fox (His Mischief, Free Energy). Since moving away from the Twin Cities, Sheridan has been busy hunting caribou in Alaska and playing cruise ships. Sheridan is joined by a new favorite of ours, Hollow Boys. Hollow Boys are a rad 3 piece, garage / gloomy / glammy rock band who we think y'all will dig. DJ's Biggie Schaals and TRL (aka Tom of Modern Radio) will create the soundtrack to the evening before, between and after the performers. The mobile store will be on hand for you to peruse and purchase from.

We mentioned a few months back that our friend Dallas has created a indie horror film called Entrance. We finally got to see the film in all it's glory and it's pretty awesome. The use of songs from our artists, Signal To Trust, Daughters of the Sun and Tornavalanche, was amusing. Stephen King reviewed it in Entertainment Weekly and now it's available on Netflix, iTunes and DVD. The movie starts slow, but it definitely delivers by the end. No spoilers!

Finally, we're cooking up an important and exciting event with the Triple Rock, Cake in 15 and many others in the Twin Cities creative community around the upcoming election. Specific lineup information will be forthcoming, but what we can announce is that a wide range of bands and artists from the Minnesota music community have come together to bring awareness to the marriage inequality and voter suppression amendments on the ballot in Minnesota this Fall. Proceeds will go to Minnesota United For All Families and Take Action MN. Stay tuned to us and the Triple Rock website for details. These ammendments are reprehensible and are set up to limit the freedoms and rights of many. Defeating these amendments is very important to us at Modern Radio and we are doing all we can to help the cause. Join us on October 26th & 27th and VOTE NO TWICE!

August News Update

School is back in session and we have a load of shows that we think you'll find to your liking.

Starting off the month on September 1st, STNNNG will be playing with Shellac and Bellini at First Avenue's Mainroom. This show is part of Shellac's 20th anniversary tour. You may remember Shellac played the last lunch show in 2006 with STNNNG and Signal to Trust. Also, if you've been paying attention to the updates, you know that Shellac's vocal frontman, Steve Albini, recently recorded the upcoming STNNNG album. STNNNG will be playing some songs off their forthcoming album set for release in early 2013. This should be a kick ass show so don't miss out. 18+, doors at 6:30

In other STNNNG related shows, Nate Nelson's American Cream will be performing at the Hexagon Bar Sunday, September 2nd. Also on the bill is Soft Cops T-Bone and the Miami Dolphins. This is a free, early show with doors at 8PM.

On Wednesday, September 5th Modern Radio and Landland presents Mount Eerie at Co Exhibition in NE Minneapolis. You might recall Phil's compelling performance last Labor Day at the Cedar Cultural Center. This year he comes to town playing a great gallery space run by our friends from Burlesque of North America above the Landland studio. Also performing at the event will be Les Ourses, Myrrh and Jim and the French Vanilla. If you haven't already picked up the new Jim and the French Vanilla record we'll have some at the show. This is an all ages event and advance tickets are available via Landland here.

Finally, Thursday, September 6th at the Kitty Cat Klub, our monthly Modern Radio Music Night with have Old Moon (formerly Strong Bones. ex-Malachi Constant, Ex-Hockey Night) with their first show back from a year long hiatus.Think of a healthy mix between Dead Meadow and Neu! July News Update

I'm just getting this under the wire to qualify as a July news update so here goes.

Thanks to everyone who came out and visited us at Pitchfork Fest this year. Despite the torrential downpours we managed to keep all records dry and sell a few in the process, our best year yet.

We have some new releases from Moonglyph Records, Learning Curve Records and Littlefoot as well as a variety of stuff left over from the fest. So come on by the Kitty Cat Klub this Thursday, August 2 for Modern Radio Night where we'll have everything on hand. This month we have Prissy Clerks and The Money Works performing along with DJs Jon Reviler and TRL.

Last month we announced a new release by STNNNG, a reissue of sorts of their first two albums, Dignified Sissy and Fake Fake together on Playbutton. If you got a chance to see STNNNG at ICT Fest in Wichita or the Omaha and Minneapolis shows this past weekend you might have seen these cool, new gadgets. We've got a limited quantity for purchase in the webstore, so don't miss out on them.

June News Update

On July 4th, 1776 our forefathers wrote a bitchy memo to the king, but the real shit went down the next day after they sobered up. So come hang out with us at the Kitty Cat Klub on Thursday, July 5th and keep our nation's party going. This month we have a great Twin Cities band Crimes playing as well as Dog Day, a band coming through town on tour from Halifax, Canada. We also have DJs B-Real (Cole) and Will Wlizlo (Reviler). Also on hand as always will be the Modern Radio mobile record store. 9PM 21+ FREE.

We're also excited to announce the release of a new product and new release of sorts. STNNNG's first two full length records are essentially out-of-print. These classic records by an amazing band, will be reissued together on an exciting new format, Playbutton! What the hell is a Playbutton you might ask. Well imagine a 2" button that you wear, with a headphone jack that stores up to 70 minutes of music with forward/reverse, volume and equalizer controls on the back. Another cool feature is that you can download the tracks to your computer and upload a new playlist of your choosing as often as you like. We'll have more info about this cool new product in the coming weeks, but here's a sneak peak of what it's going to look like.

In other STNNNG news the band has created a new tumblr site which will be the official website for the band going forward. Go check it out. The band just announced some new Midwest shows for July.

Finally, it's Summer time and that means Pitchfork Fest is coming soon July 13-15 in Chicago's Union Park. We'll be selling a bunch of new records in the CHIRP Record Fair for the forth year straight so come on by and say hi. It's sure to be a hot one so bring us some drinks too.

May News Update

The ninth annual Heliotrope Fest is upon us once again, May 25-27. This time the 3 day experimental/emerging music festival will be held at the Lab Theatre in Minneapolis. The space looks great and the lineup is stellar as usual. We'll be there selling the fine albums available on the Modern Radio store so pop by and say hi!

The Modern Radio Nights at the Kitty Cat Klub have been a blast and the fun continues in June.

June 7th - Modern Radio Night at the Kitty Cat Klub

Magic Castles (new album on Aton from Brian Jonestown Massacre's label, A Records)
Robust Worlds (Chris Rose from Vampire Hands and Heavy Deeds solo outing. First album due out on Destijl this Fall)

9pm FREE 21+

We can't wait to see what everyone has put together for June. We'll have the Modern Radio store on hand as usual with lots of new goodies we are picking up before they even make it to the website.

Preview: July will be the Twin Cities band Crimes and Cole from Daughters of the Sun DJing under the moniker B-Real.

Finally, we'd like to tell you about a film our friend Dallas Hallam has been working on. You may know Dallas as the creator of the Let's Be Active tour documentary for the FT(The Shadow Government), Will Whitmore and Paradise Island a few years ago. Dallas's new film, Entrance was released this past Friday May 18th by IFC Films. It's getting great reviews and we're quite eager to see it. What we do know is that the film will include scenes with tunes by Signal To Trust, Daughters of the Sun and Tornavalanche.  It will be available on Itunes, Amazon, IFC and IFC Midnight's HD VOD channels, Playstation, and XBox. A DVD is in the works, and netflix later. We're incredibly proud of Dallas and hope you all get to see the film.

April News Update

If you missed our Modern Radio Night last month, then you missed out on great music provided by Makr, Teenage Strangler, Andrew Broder and Steve from Moon Glyph but fortunately, May is shortly upon us and we have a great lineup for you.

May 3rd - Modern Radio Night at the Kitty Cat Klub

Collin Gorman Weiland (of Daughter of the Sun, Camden, Roy Orb D.M.T.)
Plus DJs Makr and Neil Weir

9pm FREE 21+
The mobile Modern Radio store will be there with tons of great records.

The webstore is chocked full of new goodies including the new LP by Is/Is - III. We also have a handful of new Moonglyph titles including the latest LP from Food Pyramid, Buffalo Moon CD, Xander Harris / Dylan Ettinger split 7" and a bunch of new cassettes.

Last and definitely not least, we have thrilling news about a new STNNNG LP. If you have seen STNNNG lately, you know they have been playing a ton of new songs. Well, those songs are recorded and will make up their new record. The band chose to record the new album with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago. STNNNG has had the opportunity to play with Albini's Shellac in the past and Steve has referenced the band in past interviews, so its very exciting to have the renowned producer and music legend record their latest opus. The band reports that results were very promising and hopes to master and release a record later this year. We here at Modern Radio can not wait to hear the recording and all about the experience. More on this Albini produced STNNNG record coming soon!

March News Update

Thanks to everyone who came out to the record release show for Jim and the French Vanilla and the first of many Modern Radio nights at the Kitty Cat Klub. If you didn't make it to the release show, you can pick up the record in our webstore, in record stores in the Twin Cities or at future Modern Radio night's at the Kitty Cat Klub. Less than 100 remain so these won't be around forever.

Next month at the Kitty Cat Klub, April 5th Modern Radio Night will include live music by Teenage Strangler and Makr (ex-To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie) as well as DJ sets by Andrew Broder (Cloak Ox, Fog) and Steve from Moonglyph Records. It's free as always and we'll be selling a ton of records from our webstore and beyond.

Since last you heard from us, we've added a bunch of new stuff to the webstore. We have hot new cassette and vinyl releases from Moonglyph Records artists Food Pyramid, Roy Orb D.M.T. (Cole of DOTS), Buffalo Moon, and more. Our friends over at Totally Gross National Prouduct got us stocked up on records including the Cloak Ox Prisen CDEP, and the Marijuana Deathsquads LP. We've added issues of the art and literary magazine Paper Darts, Rodd Keith's My Pipe Yellow Dream from Roaratorio as well as the latest collaboration with Michael Yonkers and the Blind Shake. Keep checking back in. We're constantly adding new stuff.

Finally, we'd like to address a recent change to the availability of our music digitally. Spotify, the online music streaming service has become a staple for discovering and listening to music today. We've decided to opt out and not have our catalog available on Spotify after working with them for the last 6 months. The decision to opt-out of Spotify is neither new nor infrequent. Many labels and artists have done the same in response to Spotify's insultingly low compensation rates. We here at Modern Radio have always made a commitment to making our music available and affordable in a variety of formats. However, the Spotify formula essentially devalues music and greatly reduces our ability to support our artists. We have no problem with making our releases available digitally and have been very proactive in doing so, but Spotify is essentially giving the music away. At some point people have to determine for themselves how much they value the music that they enjoy, because if it is not paid for at some level, artists will stop creating music. Please understand, this is not a CD/record versus digital issue. We are happy to share music on Modern Radio via streaming on our own website. Also, feel free to contact us if you would like a free download sampler of music on our label that is available to order on our webstore. We love the music and community we are connected to and are happy to share the wonderful music that has been created.

February News Update: New Modern Radio Music Night & New Jim and the French Vanilla Record!

We here at Modern Radio have always been fans of what is going on under the surface in the Twin Cities music and creative community. So now we bring to you, every first Thursday of the month at the Kitty Cat Klub, a new, FREE music night to reflect it. We will be booking 1-2 bands (done by midnight) and 1-3 DJs (great musiciams with great taste in music). This is definitely not your typical dance music night. We'll be selling records from our label, webstore, lots of local stuff from Moon Glyph, Learning Curve, Totally Gross National Product, Stand Up! Records, Guilt Ridden Pop, Roaratorio, Doomtree and much much more. Additionally, we'll have select titles that we carry, isted in this thread. We're excited to be able to put these nights together. We're really trying to showcase a lot of what we love about being part of this amazing creative community.

Month 1 / March 1 - will be the release show for Jim and the French Vanilla. For those of you not familiar, Jim and the French Vanilla is the solo project of Jim Blaha of the Blind Shake. His second album, "II" will be released in a very imited pressing of 100. The record includes a digital download card and featurers Jim's cover illustration. The record will be for sale at a reduced price, this night only and again, there are only 100 of these so don't snooze. "II" is a treasure hunt in a dementia ward - surprises all around. Self-recorded by Blaha in his bedroom on cassette four-track, these songs explore the loneliness of discovery and the thrill of misery. The music comes across as stripped down garage rock with haunting distant sounds. Jim with be playing a solo set as well as a rare acoustic performance with Blind Shake bandmates Mike and Dave.

Tom (from Modern Radio, DJ TRL) Chris Besinger (STNNNG) and Pete Biasi (Signal To Trust/TFB) will be playing music throughout the night. 21+ 9PM FREE

2012 News Update

2012, Welcome. According to the Mayans we have about 11 months til it's over - but what the fuck do the Mayans know, they're dead and we're ready for an exciting 13th year.

New Release: We have a new album coming out by Jim and the French Vanilla. You may know Jim from his other kickass band, The Blind Shake, and TBS's collaborations with Michael Yonkers. However, Jim has been making stripped down, garage rock blues on his own for a number of years too. We released Jim's first album Roll Out the Candy in 2009, and this new record has been playing non-stop at Modern Radio headquarters. We're doing a short run of this album on vinyl and will have details about the release date and a release show in the coming weeks.

New Webstore Titles: Our fine-feathered friends from Doomtree and Guilt Ridden Pop provide some excellent new records coming out of the Twin Cities area and we've stocked up for your buying pleasure. Doomtree offers up their newest crew album, No Kings, and the latest album by Dessa called Castor, The Twin. Guilt Ridden Pop hooked us up with three new shiny LPs by the bands Claps, Brief Candles (Milwaukee) and Wizards Are Real. Expect a number of other new titles in the next update from Paper Darts, Roaratorio, and Totally Gross National Product.

Quick note: STNNNG will be playing their last show till at least April (GAH!) this weekend. Check them out during The Deaf's residency at Grumpy's Downtown on Saturday, January 28. Word is they have a ton of new tunes to share and some big plans for the upcoming Spring.

Finally, we'd like to welcome the newest addition to the Modern Radio Family - William "Breadcrumb" Adams. Proud papa Bob (Tornavalanche / Ten Grand / MR web genius) reports that, "he's a rad little guy who loves screaming and sleeping." Well done, sir. I'm sure Modern Radio will be putting out this kid's post-music full-length on brain chip implant in a few years.

2011 in a nutshell

STNNNG flipped their van in a blizzard just days before a show with Mike Watt and survive with only a few bumps and bruises. Expect big things from them in 2012 including the much anticipated collaboration with FT(The Shadow Government). Before the year is done they will be doing a set of AC/DC covers at the Turf Club. If you want blood, you got it! STNNNG kicks off the new year with another great bill on January 7th at the Turf.

Vampire Hands got together for a rare show this past week with all 4 original members. Colin continues to live in Missoula and is working on a number of projects including American Trash band. Chris, Chris and Alex have been quite busy. Chris B. is playing with new bands Polica, Pony Trash (new band with Neil from Chambermaids and Nate of STNNNG) and continues to play out solo on occasion as Invisible Boy. Chris R. has been busy with his own solo project Robust Worlds and Alex is playing with The Chambermaids. The Chris's and Alex nabbed two talented ladies, Molly and Sara, for a new band called Heavy Deeds. Heads ain't ready for how good this band is already.

Daughters of the Sun released a pretty kick ass record earlier this year called Ghost With Chains, which pretty quickly became out of print. Fortunately we still have a couple copies available in the webstore. DOTS will be playing a rare Minneapolis show at the Hexagon Bar - Sunday, January 8 with Heavy Deeds. Word has it that they will be finishing their next masterpiece in January.

In addition to a number of the Twin Cities bands we already talked about, we wanted to mention some other newly formed top notch Twin Cities bands that we enjoy, Bombay Sweets (ex-Selby Tigers, ex-His Mischief) and Cloak Ox (ex-Fog). There's still something in the water around these parts and we want to continue to spread the good word.

Finally, it's been a hell of a year for Doomtree artist SIMS, starting off with the much anticipated and critically acclaimed album Bad Time Zoo. After touring the country several times over and as a mainstay at summer festivals like Soundset and Soundtown, SIMS brought it all back home with another hugely successful, end of year Doomtree Blowout. We were so pleased to be able to help out with Bad Time Zoo and can't wait to see what SIMS has up his sleeve for 2012.

Much thanks goes out to everyone we've worked with and who has helped us out at the label. We've got some exciting things already planned for the new year so stay tuned.

11/17/11 Update

Look, we know we're a few months behind on the news updates. Thanks for not saying anything. Our own guilt was enough to deal with. So let's just look to what is happening in the now.

We continue to expand our webstore, carrying a variety of Minnesota classics and new releases. Just in stock is the new LP by Skoal Kodiak called Kryotonym Bodliak. This record has been a long time in the making and we're so happy that it has finally been released. Also recently available are two timeless slowcore Low records, Secret Name and Long Division. Additional we've restocked Trust, Things We Lost in the Fire and The Great Destroyer. Finally, we'll also have the recently reissued I Could Live in Hope very soon.

If mail order isn't your thing then this event might interest you. Modern Radio will be participating in Co Exhibitions' second annual World (craft) Fair on Saturday, December 10th. We'll be selling records from our entire catalog as well as our extended webstore. We also have a handful of new vinyl of select classic records including T-Rex, Velvet Underground, Superchunk, Spaceman 3, Black Flag and much more! We'll be there all day from 10am-6pm and Admission is FREE! See you there!

Sheridan Fox (His Mischief) has a residency every Wednesday in November at the new Amsterdam Bar in downtown Saint Paul. If you haven't been over to check it out you should. It's a great space and a much needed addition to the area. There's only a couple weeks left so don't miss out.

The Chambermaids have a new digital single available for free download on Bandcamp. They also have a few upcoming shows.
11/18 at the Kitty Cat Club w/ Mother of Fire, Is/Is & Brute Heart
12/17 at Hymie's w/ Is/Is (AA, 6:30-9:30PM)

STNNNG has been working on a colaborative project with FT (The Shadow Government). The bands have finally completed recoding and mixing after 4 years in the works. STNNNG will also be playing the annual winter blowout show at the Turf Club on January 7th w/ Birthday Suits, Blind Shake and Gay Witch Abortion.

Congrats to Robust Worlds and Polica for their inclusion in this year's City Pages "Picked To Click" Best New Bands poll. Robust Worlds is the solo project of Chris Rose (Vampire Hands) and Polica includes the rhythm section of Ben Ivascu (STNNNG) and Chris Beirden (Vampire Hands).

The guys from Vampire Hands also have a new band called Heavy Deeds. The group played their first few shows for a residency at the Turf Club last month and they continue to play shows around the Twin Cities.

That's it for now everyone. Have a good turkey day and you'll hear from us next month.

8/16/11 Update

Ah, another summer month, another step toward winter. What's that? You forgot about winter? Rest assured my fair weather friends, while you're busy complaining about the trials of summer heat, old Jack Frost or Edgar Winter, or whoever it is that pulls the snowy strings, is grinning anxiously waiting to show you what extreme weather is all about. So, no more whining about heat indices and long summer days, lest you be left out in the cold about all the cool shit going on around you.

Speaking of cool shit, your friendly Modern Radio record slangers held court at the annual Pitchfork Music Festival this past month in Chicago. We survived the high 90-degree heat and humidity (okay, maybe a little whining), represented a ton of great Twin Cities labels and bands, and even had an image of our illustrious leader, DJ TRL, captured for all of eternity on the Huffington Post. Yep, that's Tom, looking like a fiery comet of wisdom awash in record seller plaid. For more on the Pitchfork Fest experience, check out MPLS.TV's oh-so-cerebral reportage

So, why should you really care about our Chicago excursion? Because we stocked up on a bunch of sweet records before heading down and the leftovers are all yours, specially priced for newsletter subscribers. Classic LPs from bands like Velvet Underground, T-Rex, Superchunk, Spacemen 3, and Black Flag are still available and all priced to move at just a hair over wholesale. Get at 'em quick though, as supplies are seriously limited. You can check out the full list of stuff on our messageboard and just shoot us an E-mail if anything piques your fancy. If you're outside of the Twin Cities metro and require shipping we can let you know what that amount is as well.

In other news, STNNNG raided Hell's Kitchen recently for their Benefit for a Totaled Van show. The show was well attended and all the bands were great. Reviler's Adam Bubolz was on hand snapping pictures, which are up on their site. The band was also mentioned in a recent interview with Steve Albini as a band he currently enjoys. So check that out as well.

And finally, if you haven't heard, Modern Radio is helping in an effort to bring Mount Eerie to the Cedar Cultural Center this September. You can find more details about it on the Cedar website, but it's actually pretty simple. If you want to see Mount Eerie, pony up early and you can get some nice bonus goodies. It works like a Kickstarter campaign, and as we stand, we're just about ¾ of the way there with only 5 days left to contribute.

That's it for this month. Stay tuned next month for more news on upcoming releases and much more!

7/13/11 Update

Summer is in full-swing, which means that Modern Radio is preparing to pack up some records, load up the car and head out on the open road on a vision quest to find truth, freedom, and the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. In this news update, we'll be following our spirit animals, a wisecracking owl known as Sims and a street tough grizzly bear with a heart of gold known as STNNNG as they play shows and win hearts in the Twin Cities and beyond. Now, a vision quest is never an easy undertaking, so why not sit back, relax, and follow our summer progress via the more comfortable route of this news update? Just don't forget to fast for two days before reading on, or magical tidings of Pitchfork, STNNNG, Sims and our webstore may not appear.

Pitchfork Fest: We'll be at the CHIRP Record Fair at Pitchfork Music Festival again for the 3rd straight year, selling records from our catalog as well as a ton of other local Twin Cities labels and bands. At the table you will also find us selling a number of classic titles of past and present that we love including T.Rex, Superchunk, Hüsker Dü, Black Flag, Iggy Pop and much much more! The prices on all of these records are nice and easy. We'll be passing out free digital samplers that will include a variety of stuff from the Modern Radio catalog as well as other artists available in our web store.

STNNNG will be playing Hell's Kitchen in Minneapolis on August 4th with the Blind Shake and Buildings as a sort of fundraiser to help replace their totaled van. If you haven't heard the van had flipped on the freeway coming back late from a show in southern MN. Everyone is fine, minus some bumps, bruises and well, a operational van. So come by to show your support and let the guys know you're glad they're still alive.

SIMS continues to grab people's attention, racking up accolades and year end list mentions. Star Tribune recently included Bad Time Zoo in its list of the Best Local Albums of 2011 so far. Do yourself a favor and check out the interview/video of Sims where he talks to Buzzine in Austin, TX during SXSW. Doomtree also have a bunch of shows scheduled this Summer including Sims playing solo on August 19 in Somerset, WI for the SoundTown Music & Camping Festival

: If you've dropped by our web store lately you might have noticed that we've expanded our selection well beyond the Modern Radio catalog. We've been working dilegently to collect work of artists and labels that we enjoy within this community and beyond. Just recently we've added most of the Dark Dark Dark catalog, the new Soft Abuse release by Brute Heart and the latest from Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles. We'll be getting new titles in more regularly and will be letting people know of various deals and discounts, so check back periodically.

Finally, if you have signed up for our mailing list recently you might have noticed it is in a slightly different format. It has been a long time coming to get this mailing list / newsletter going. Hopefully you appreciate the new look. We'll be doing our best to bring you regular updates and specials from the web store. So tell your friends to sign up today!

Hope everyone is having a great Summer and if you're going to be in Chicago for Pitchfork Fest this weekend stop by the table and say hi.
